    Plant Lubrication

    No full text
TutorialPg. 177-188The correct lubrication of plant equipment is an important factor in sustaining production with reduced equipment outage and lower maintenance costs. A well planned and coordinated lubrication program is a necessary prerequisite for any preventive maintenance program that may be established by a production plant. This paper deals largely with applied lubrication in the petro-chemical industry, including turbomachinery. Many of the comments expressed are based on personal experience by the author on equipment operating in a chemical complex on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Many procedures and approaches to plant lubrication are discussed, including the initiation of a computer assisted lubrication program, sampling and testing oil from critical machinery and specific procedures to apply lubricants to a variety of process machinery, including constant level oilers, electric motors and grease lubricated couplings. Special emphasis is made on the prevention of water and process gasses as contaminants in oil systems on turbomachinery

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010Through a dialogical relation between poems and song lyrics, and the socio-political contexts which surrounded these texts, this research discusses the resonance that North American poet, Allen Ginsberg, had over the Brazilian musical movement, the Tropicália. The corpora are the poems "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), and "Wild Orphan" (1952), written by Allen Ginsberg, and the songs "Batmacumba" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composed by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composed by Caetano Veloso, and "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composed by Gilberto Gil. The main theoretical and critical parameters of this research include: Mikhail Bakhtin and his reflections on intertextuality; James J. Farrell, who believes that the American counterculture began with the Beats; Claudio Willer, who stresses the importance of Allen Ginsberg to the Beat movement, as well as to the birth of the American counterculture; Christopher Dunn, who emphasizes the historical, social, and political relevance of the Tropicália; and Celso Favaretto, who discusses in depth the complexity of most of the Tropicália songs. Based on such parameters, this research suggests that the life and work of Allen Ginsberg had great resonance over the creation of the Tropicália.

Hundreds of variants clustered in genomic loci and biological pathways affect human height

Most common human traits and diseases have a polygenic pattern of inheritance: DNA sequence variants at many genetic loci influence the phenotype. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified more than 600 variants associated with human traits(1), but these typically explain small fractions of phenotypic variation, raising questions about the use of further studies. Here, using 183,727 individuals, we show that hundreds of genetic variants, in at least 180 loci, influence adult height, a highly heritable and classic polygenic trait(2,3). The large number of loci reveals patterns with important implications for genetic studies of common human diseases and traits. First, the 180 loci are not random, but instead are enriched for genes that are connected in biological pathways (P = 0.016) and that underlie skeletal growth defects (P<0.001). Second, the likely causal gene is often located near the most strongly associated variant: in 13 of 21 loci containing a known skeletal growth gene, that gene was closest to the associated variant. Third, at least 19 loci have multiple independently associated variants, suggesting that allelic heterogeneity is a frequent feature of polygenic traits, that comprehensive explorations of already-discovered loci should discover additional variants and that an appreciable fraction of associated loci may have been identified. Fourth, associated variants are enriched for likely functional effects on genes, being over-represented among variants that alter amino-acid structure of proteins and expression levels of nearby genes. Our data explain approximately 10% of the phenotypic variation in height, and we estimate that unidentified common variants of similar effect sizes would increase this figure to approximately 16% of phenotypic variation (approximately 20% of heritable variation). Although additional approaches are needed to dissect the genetic architecture of polygenic human traits fully, our findings indicate that GWA studies can identify large numbers of loci that implicate biologically relevant genes and pathways

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Seabed foraging by Antarctic krill: Implications for stock assessment, bentho-pelagic coupling, and the vertical transfer of iron

    No full text
A compilation of more than 30 studies shows that adult Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) may frequent benthic habitats year-round, in shelf as well as oceanic waters and throughout their circumpolar range. Net and acoustic data from the Scotia Sea show that in summer 2-20% of the population reside at depths between 200 and 2000 m, and that large aggregations can form above the seabed. Local differences in the vertical distribution of krill indicate that reduced feeding success in surface waters, either due to predator encounter or food shortage, might initiate such deep migrations and results in benthic feeding. Fatty acid and microscopic analyses of stomach content confirm two different foraging habitats for Antarctic krill: the upper ocean, where fresh phytoplankton is the main food source, and deeper water or the seabed, where detritus and copepods are consumed. Krill caught in upper waters retain signals of benthic feeding, suggesting frequent and dynamic exchange between surface and seabed. Krill contained up to 260 nmol iron per stomach when returning from seabed feeding. About 5% of this iron is labile, i.e., potentially available to phytoplankton. Due to their large biomass, frequent benthic feeding, and acidic digestion of particulate iron, krill might facilitate an input of new iron to Southern Ocean surface waters. Deep migrations and foraging at the seabed are significant parts of krill ecology, and the vertical fluxes involved in this behavior are important for the coupling of benthic and pelagic food webs and their elemental repositories

Title: Labour's Response to the Closure Experience a Case of the Allen Industries Inc. Plant Closure, Author: Carol M. Mullally, Location: ThodeThis thesis examines labour's response to the closure experience. More specifically, it is a case study of the workers displaced by the Allen Industries Inc. plant closure. The study focuses on three main aspects of the shutdown including the collective actions of the Allen hourly employees, the effects of management actions on the workers' closure experience and the impact of the managers' actions on the displaced worker's post closure re-employment experiences. Overall, the study demonstrates the negative effect of managers' actions on the wage earner . However, it also shows that collective actions of the wage earners can induce management assistance and therefore reduce the negative impacts.ThesisBachelor of Arts (BA

Electronic submission – Analogy with the Severn Bore

    No full text
Introducing Elsevier's electronic submission system (EES) to the many erudite academics, clinicians and researchers who contribute to Medical Engineering & Physics (MEP) could have been a bore. I hope the physical scientists amongst you, who will recognise this natural phenomenon as a step function modulated by an Airy function, will forgive the pun. I was brought up in an area of the UK where the river Severn gives rise to the occurrence of a wave that can be equally like riding a roller coaster or a bit of a damp squib. It is thus with that same slightly nervous, queasy feeling that we embarked upon presenting the system to the many people submitting to MEP.During the last quarter there have been many peaks and troughs whilst the system has moved towards a seamless publishing service, but the transients have given way to a stable soliton. The main advantage of EES is the streamlining of effort required by all involved, not least the authors and reviewers. For authors it speeds up submission and turn-around of reviews. Authors can upload electronic copy written using a variety of word-processing software. The system automatically converts the files to portable document format (pdf). Conversion of complicated figures and mathematical formulae are also handled efficiently. To date very few problems have arisen and those that have occurred have been swiftly and satisfactorily resolved by our author support team.Reviewers are able to receive an abstract along with their invitation to review before agreeing to act as a referee. Both editors and reviewers can electronically view the full manuscript, search for similar articles and submit reports to the editorial office. Manuscripts are passed securely to the production office keeping their unique identifying number and authors can view progress of their work throughout the editorial process. Thus, as publication lead times improve even further we look forward to receiving your manuscripts and publishing the cutting edge research for which MEP is renowned
