New insights on the size distribution of Italian firms by geographical area
Abstract
Using a large industrial panel, we show that the size distribution of Italian manufacturing firms can be well approximated by a two-parameter generalized Pareto distribution (GPD); the fitting is particularly good for medium-large companies.
This evidence seems to hold using different proxies of size: number of employees, revenues, fixed assets, total costs and debts. The choice of different measures of size is justified by the desire of presenting robust results, but also by the idea that one single optimal measure of size probably does not exist, and it is thus better to combine different points of view. We believe that such an approach represents a clear novelty of our work.
The presence of a GPD in the size distribution of Italian firms suggests interesting implications of industrial economics, as discussed in the paper. In more details, we find that, for the entire time window considered, the parameter of the GDP is persistently in the interval [0.5, 1], indicating fat tails - consistently with the so-called Pareto law of industrial dynamics, but also pointing out a certain stability in the shape of the size distribution of Italian firms.
For what concerns growth rates, the Laplace distribution provides a good fit, ruling out Gibrat’s law of proportionate effects from the patterns of growth of Italian companies. In the paper we discuss the economic implications of such a finding

The differential impact of intra-firm collaboration and technological network centrality on employees' likelihood of leaving the firm
How does an employee's centrality in intra-firm R&D activities affect his/her propensity for outward mobility? Does this proclivity vary by the type of employment the employee seeks: moving to other firms versus founding a new venture? We maintain that to answer these questions we must distinguish between an employee's centrality in the intra-firm collaboration network and his/her centrality in the intra-firm technological recombination network. We utilize the curricula vitae and patent data of corporate inventors at a leading semiconductor company between 1993 and 2012 to test our hypotheses. Contrary to prevailing views, our competing risk model indicates that corporate inventors who are central in the intra-firm collaboration and technological network, and thus have the most opportunities, are less likely to leave the current employer. However, when considering external employment opportunities, their preferences vary. Collaboration central individuals are more likely to start a new venture than to move to another employer. Their skill in developing inter-personal relationships enables them to attract the tangible and intangible resources needed in a new firm. In contrast, inventors whose technological expertise is central to the firm's technology recombination network are more likely to move to another employer than to start a new venture. In an established firm, they can leverage their technological know-how using the resources that a new venture would lack. Our theory highlights the tradeoffs in employees' attempts to take advantage of their internal and external value based on their position within the firm's collaboration and technological networks
Introducing “La fabrique du droit”. A Conversation with Bruno Latour
Bruno Latour talks with Paolo Landri about his book on the Conseil d'Etat (La Fabrique du droit). The conversation was held in 2006 at the time of the Italian translation of the book and illustrates the research project and the difficulties the author had in the field. At the same time, it clarifies the trajectories of Bruno Latour's work and theoretical framework of his program of study with respect to sociology, anthropology, and philosophy of law. The conversation helps to understand the open-ended character of Bruno Latour's research and reflection including STS as well as sociological, anthropological and philosophical themes
Il sistema difensivo costiero della Sardegna dai mastros agli ingegneri militari tra fondazioni e restauri (XVI-XIX secolo)
The establishment of Sardinia’s defensive system unfolded over a broad timespan, beginning in 1587 with the initiative of Philip II, King of Spain, to construct coastal towers for the Mediterranean war, marked by the creation of the Royal Administration of Towers, and concluding at the end of the 18th century with the diminishing need for defensive measures, a prelude to the definitive abolition of the Administration in 1842. In this complex and costly endeavour to control and protect the territory, the role of military engineers was pivotal from the very outset. This was exemplified by the 1577 report by military engineer Rocco Cappellino, who prepared topographical maps of Sardinia depicting 33 coastal towers. His work provided valuable insights for improving and enhancing the defensive system. Later, the engineer De Vincenti significantly contributed by proposing a new arrangement and design for the coastal towers, which became the cornerstone of the island’s defensive system. His efforts included an exploratory journey along the coastline, during which he documented the number and distribution of towers, listing 82 in total, and meticulously described their locations, conditions of preservation, and the repairs required for each. It is worth noting that for a considerable time, much of the technical work, both in the conceptual and execution phases, was carried out by ordinary master builders. The archives hold a vast collection of documents relating to the design of the towers and the planning of maintenance works. These records reveal not only the structural and typological characteristics of these architectural features but also the extent of the knowledge possessed by the workforce and military engineers. The latter, like De Vincenti, were often engaged in civil or religious projects, during which they demonstrated significant technical and formal expertis
Composition of the essential oil of allium neapolitanum cirillo growing wild in sicily and its activity on microorganisms affecting historical art crafts
Essential oil of the aerial parts of Allium neapolitanum Cirillo collected in Sicily were analyzed by gas-chromatography-flame-ionization detection and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. Nineteen compounds were identified in the oil and the main components were found to be (E)-chrysanthenyl acetate (28.1%), (Z)-chrysanthenyl acetate (23.8%), (E)-Î2-farnesene (9.6%), dimethyl trisulfide (9.6%), camphor (7.4%), methyl allyl disulfide (6.8%) and 1-methyl-3-allyl trisulfide (5.8%). The essential oil showed good antimicrobial activity against 11 strains of test microorganisms, including several species infesting historical material
