Examining Effective Secondary Physics Pedagogy in the UK: A Review of Literature from 2010- 2021

    No full text
Pedagogy is arguably a contested term, encompassing classroom practices, the theories that underpin practice and wider contexts of school cultures and society beyond schools. This thesis focuses on effective teaching practices specifically in secondary school physics with this wider picture in mind. An exploration of the general literature on effective pedagogy was a necessary step towards understanding how this resonates with research specifically concerning secondary school physics teaching. From the general literature, techniques such as regular low-stakes feedback, pupil active participation, lesson objectives, meta-cognition and scaffolding emerged as particularly important. Pupils’ prior conceptions about scientific ideas and the use of practical laboratory work are also important themes within science pedagogy. It is also recognised that features of effective practice are often linked to constructivism and social constructivism, and teaching practices are often evaluated through measurements of pupils’ progress. This project subsequently adopted a systematic approach to identify relevant peerreviewed papers concerning effective secondary physics teaching in the United Kingdom (UK), published between 2010 and 2021. This systematic search of education databases identified five such peer-reviewed papers, spanning quantitative and qualitative research. The papers were assessed for quality, and two papers were rated as moderately high quality with the rest seen to be of moderate quality. A narrative approach was then taken to develop a description of effective secondary physics teaching in the UK, by looking for consonances and differences among these fives paper and triangulation with the wider literature. Constructivist and social constructivist theories were again seen as important in these five papers, even if only implicitly. From this narrative synthesis, a picture emerges of physics teaching that values dialogue and discussion, engages with research on pupils’ prior conceptions and in which teachers are equipped with good subject knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and a repertoire of techniques, explanations and analogies. However, the identification of only five papers (two of which reported different aspects of the same trial and only two of which were of higher quality) could perhaps indicate a paucity of reported research into effective secondary physics teaching in the UK in the past decade. Therefore, there is scope for further empirical research in this area

Exploring hidden narratives: Conscript graffiti at the former military base of Kummersdorf

    No full text
This article explores the cultural significance and interpretative potential of graffiti left by Soviet conscripts at Kummersdorf, a former military base in the German federal state of Brandenburg. The graffiti is framed as war art and its typology, distribution and content is studied in detail. In this way opportunities for further research are highlighted, as well as the potential for the graffiti to contribute to interpretative and conservation strategies. We demonstrate how the graffiti embodies multi-level interpretative narratives which can help to reveal hidden aspects of Soviet conscript life and cultural practices whilst alluding to global events and Soviet and Russian military policy. More generally, the article aims to promote the potential of graffiti and other forms of what is traditionally considered vandalism to contribute to the cultural significance and interpretation of heritage sites

    Justice in the Fields

In this piece, Nick Hack talks about the agricultural labor in California. The paper explores the ebb and flow of the shifting tides of ethnicity in the state: What ethnic groups have been the major contributors to labor in Californian agriculture and what roles have they played? The author challenges the reader to consider the parallelism between land and labor exploitation and further explores local organizations that have been created to bring alternatives both in the management of the land as well as in the creation of opportunities for agricultural laborers

Guest Who - An analysis of For Your Consideration by Christopher Guest

Guest Who – An analysis of For your Consideration by Christopher Guest Christopher guest mockumentaries shaped a generation of comedy in America. Films such as Waiting for Guffman (1996,) Best in Show (2000,) A Mighty Wind (2003,) and most recently Mascots (2016,) on Netflix rank historically among the funniest movies ever made and have all received critical acclaim, with one exception. The mockumentary, For Your Consideration (2000), while in the same vein as the others, did not perform as well in the box office and is not the beloved favorite like Guest’s other films. Critics and fans alike were disappointed, and it remains his least popular work. Many Christopher Guest fans have never even heard of the film. For your Consideration deals with a cast of Hollywood hacks creating a dramatic independent film. Word gets out that aging star, Marilyn Hack, may be nominated for an Oscar for her performance before the film has finished shooting. Despite an all-star cast of hilarious improvisors, the film doesn’t work. A number of scholars have theorized about why the movie was not a success, often claiming that Christopher Guest films are better when parodying quaint small-time topics like community theatre show or the Purina dog show and that he was punching too high with the Oscar awards. I contend that the issues with For your Consideration have everything to do with a lack of structure, absence of an empathetic protagonist with a clear goal, and other fundamental cinematic storytelling devices that are present in Guest’s other films

System interactions and mental health outcomes: rural African American men with serious mental illness, their social support networks, and community mental health agencies

    No full text
African American men with serious mental illness experience disadvantages in mental health care resulting from both race and gender. The intent of this research is to better understand how rural African American men with serious mental illness and their social support networks interact with each other and the institutional context of services and how this impacts mental health treatment experiences and outcomes. Two sets of respondents participated in in-depth qualitative interviews: Twenty-six rural African American men with serious mental illness and 26 members of the men’s social support networks. Thematic analysis was used to code the transcribed interviews and identify themes about system actions and interactions. Though social supports were involved in clients’ everyday lives, they were largely excluded from interactions with the community mental health agency (CMHA) staff and client treatment decisions. This research hypothesizes that failure on the part of CMHAs to collaborate with social supports results in a lack of knowledge about mental illness and mental health care in the African American community which impedes service access and client retention.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2013-08-01T21:29:20Z Item was in collections: University of Illinois Theses & Dissertations (ID: 1) No. of bitstreams: 2 Hack_Samantha.docx: 818370 bytes, checksum: 0a3bf7964a3ec78c3fa1973728819f92 (MD5) Hack_Samantha.pdf: 1225730 bytes, checksum: eab2e4aa3ded30ac0b13247e8530a557 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2014-01-16T18:17:15Z (GMT). The differential contributions of efflux transporters and metabolizing enzymes to the disposition of zidovudine (azidothymidine, AZT) and didanosine (dideoxyinosine, ddI) were investigated using murine and human cells, mouse kidney slices, and mice. Cellular transport, transport in mouse kidney slices, brain uptake, and urinary excretion of AZT and ddI were investigated. Fumitremorgin C (FTC), a breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) specific inhibitor), increased AZT accumulation, but had little or no effect on ddI accumulation in either HEK-R482 or in J774. Involvement of BCRP was investigated by comparing results in Mock- and BCRP- transfected cells, and confirmed by repeating the studies after silencing BCRP using siRNA. MK-571, a MRP family inhibitor, blocked the efflux of AZT and ddI in murine and human cells. Silencing MRP3 and MRP4 attenuated the efflux of AZT while silencing MRP1 attenuated ddI efflux. The effect of blocking efflux transporters was found to be minor as compared to inhibition of metabolizing enzymes. The major form of AZT deposited inside murine cells was AZT-MP, while the major form found inside human cells was AZT-TP. MK-571 abolished the efflux of AZT-MP in both murine and human cells. However, the efflux of AZT, ddI and their metabolites was not affected by FTC. Application of MK-571 also decreased the efflux of GAZT and ddI in kidney slices. The urinary excretion of AZT and ddI with MK-571 in mice was measured. MK-571 did not cause any significant changes in the urinary excretion of AZT, ddI, or their metabolites between the MK-571 untreated and treated groups. Collectively, the results of these studies indicate that AZT and ddI are substrates of BCRP and MRPs, however since their effects are limited in in situ and in vivo situation they appear to be relatively minor players in the overall disposition of these drugs.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 98-107)

Abstract : Technical-scientific advances caused by the Technology Genesis of Digital Communication set up a discussion on technological-educational resources. In that thematic context, the issue of Digital Objects of teaching-learning is being worked under different focuses such as elaboration and evaluation models and development repositories. However, there is a need for developing a management model that brings together congruently all stages of the process and leverage that type of feature as knowledge management tool. The research elaborates a theoretical-practical model of ODEA management, indicating its life cycle and essential stages for preparation, storage, use and reuse in virtual environments. The main subject of the present paper is "How to perform ODEA management in compliance with knowledge management principles? Theoretically, it follows the postulate of complexity paradigm, interdisciplinarity and knowledge management. Methodologically, it is a theoretical research of descriptive-exploratory nature and aims to build a model for ODEA management by following knowledge management principles. It was possible to use the inductive analysis method by considering the complexity approach. Data extracted from systematic reviews, mirrored in trials and sustained in the theoretical framework constituted a triangular analysis operating from three information sources: existing models recognition, conceptual categories of knowledge management and complexity approach, and trials extract. As a result, an ODEA management model is organized through the operation of three systems: projects management, virtual environment of teaching-learning and repository. There is also as mediator a module that promotes interoperability among them. GENESIS, an ODEA management model, is a system for promoting updated and meaningful learning and creating pedagogical knowledge assets in virtual environments, enriching the institutional memory

Caveat Venditor: Technologically Protected Subsidized Goods and the Customers Who Hack Them

    No full text
This paper explores the issues surrounding the subsidization of a technology based durable good and on the delicate dance between the producer trying to protect their profit, competitors trying to to create and sell aftermarket goods, and innovative customers who attempt to use the goods in completely unplanned, and unprofitable ways. A number of case studies are presented that highlighted the ease with which customers can tinker with subsidized products. These include Microsoft's Xbox, Netpliances' i-Opener, the Sony AIBO, and the general problems of the prepaid phone industry. A number of legal cases are also presented, although these focus more on the issue of other firms attempting to make competing aftermarket products for subsidized primary goods. The difficult question of what can a company do is explored. The question of who the company can go after for infringement, be it the reverse engineering programmer, or the college student sharing such information on her homepage, is also examined. Finally, this paper examines the moral issues involved when consumers hack these items
