Manual Acupuncture Effect on Vertigo and Tinnitus in Patient with Labyrinthitis: A Case Report
Labyrinthitis is an inflammatory disease of the inner ear perilymphatic cavity and the most common cause of prolonged spontaneous vertigo. Other symptoms are tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss. Acupuncture is one of the non-pharmacological therapeutic modalities to improve symptoms of labyrinthitis. A 54-year-old woman complained of vertigo that is preceded by tinnitus in both ears since the last 6 months. She was diagnosed with labyrinthitis. Had taken amoxicillin and decadryl for 5 days, betaserc and dimenhydrinate when she felt dizzy, and amlodipine as a routine drug for her hypertension. Physical examination showed vital signs within normal limits, grade 2 obesity, positive Romberg test, and THI score 18. Manual acupuncture was performed at acupoints GV20, GB20, TE17, TE21, SI19, GB2, GB8, TE5, LI4, KI3, PC6 and LR3 with 20 minutes retention. After the first therapy, vertigo complaints disappeared and after 12 treatments (twice a week), frequency and intensity of tinnitus became less, with THI score of 6. Therefore, acupuncture can relieve vertigo and improve tinnitus which can be seen by a decrease of THI score.

Effectiveness of combined laser-puncture and conventional wound care to accelerate diabetic foot ulcer healing
Background: Impaired wound healing is a common complication of diabetes. It has complex pathophysiologic mechanisms and often necessitates amputation. Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combined laser-puncture and conventional wound care in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Methods: This was a double-blind controlled randomized clinical trial on 36 patients, conducted at the Metabolic Endocrine Outpatient Clinic, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, between May and August 2015. Stimulation by laser-puncture (the treatment group) or sham stimulation (the control group) were performed on top of the standard wound care. Laser-puncture or sham were done on several acupuncture points i.e. LI4 Hegu, ST36 Zusanli, SP6 Sanyinjiao and KI3 Taixi bilaterally, combined with irradiation on the ulcers itself twice a week for four weeks. The mean reduction in ulcer sizes (week 2–1, week 3–1, week 4–1) were measured every week and compared between the two groups and analyzed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: The initial median ulcer size were 4.75 (0.10–9.94) cm2 and 2.33 (0.90–9.88) cm2 in laser-puncture and sham groups, respectively (p=0.027). The median reduction of ulcer size at week 2–1 was -1.079 (-3.25 to -0.09) vs -0.36 (-0.81 to -1.47) cm2, (p=0.000); at week 3–1 was -1.70 (-3.15 to -0.01) vs -0.36 (-0.80 to -0.28) cm2, (p=0.000); and at week 4–1 was -1.22 (-2.72 to 0.00) vs -0.38 (-0.74 to -0.57) cm2, (p=0.012).Conclusion: Combined laser-puncture and conventional wound care treatment are effective in accelerating the healing of diabetic foot ulcer.</jats:p
Pain Reduction After Laser Acupuncture Treatment in Geriatric Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: a Randomized Controlled Trial
Aim: to compare the effectiveness of active laser acupuncture with placebo on reducing pain intensity and improving functional outcome in geriatric patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: a double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in geriatrics with knee OA at Medical Acupuncture Outpatient Clinic, Integrated Geriatric Outpatient Clinic, Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, during May to October 2015. Sixty two patients with knee OA were randomly assigned into two groups: active laser acupuncture group or placebo laser acupuncture group. Interventions were carried out using a gallium aluminum arsenide laser device at the ST35 Dubi, ST36 Zusanli, SP9 Yinlingquan, GB34 Yanglingquan and EX - LE - 4 Neixiyan acupuncture points on the affected knee for ten sessions of treatment, i.e. twice a week. Patients were assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and Lequesne index at baseline, after four sessions, after nine sessions and at 2 weeks after the treatment had been stopped. Results: the VAS scores were significantly improved in the active laser acupuncture group compared to the placebo group. The evaluation of VAS scores was carried out after four treatment sessions (mean difference: 0.39; p<0.001), after nine treatment sessions (mean difference: 37.48; p<0.001) and at 2 weeks post intervention (mean difference: 39.15; p<0.001). The evaluation also showed significant improvement of Lequesne index after four treatment sessions (mean difference: 4.68; p<0.001), after nine treatment sessions (mean difference: 5.90; p<0.001) and at 2 weeks post intervention (mean difference: 6.48; p<0.001). Conclusion: active laser acupuncture is effective in reducing pain
