The antihypertensive effects of the Jamaican Cho-Cho (Sechium edule)

    No full text
The experiments reported in this study constitute a preliminary investigation into the possible hypotensive effect of the Jamaican Cho-Cho (Sechium edule). Experiments were conducted in a random and blind fashion on two sub species of Sechium edule. Both the pulp and the peel were examined for hypotensive activity. Water-soluble extracts were prepared from these components of the fruit and injected into anaesthetised rats. Various cardiovascular parameters were measured including heart rate, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and several ECG intervals. We report that all extracts tested produced a fall in blood pressure with little change in ECG intervals. Extract B produced the least change in heart rate with a fall in MAP of approximately 23 mmHg. Changes in heart rate with all extracts appeared to be minimal as an ED25 value could only be determined for extract A, and ED10 values could not be evaluated for extracts C and D. The mechanism(s) by which these extracts produce their hypotensive effects could not be determined in these preliminary experiments. However, it appears not to involve direct effects on cardiac tissue. This conclusion is based on the finding that it took a minimum of 10 to 15 seconds for the hypotensive action to manifest post bolus. Future experiments will be aimed at delineating the mechanism(s) involved in decreasing MAP.Peer reviewedfinal article publishe

The Trade and Economic Development of Myanmar (Cho Cho Thein, 2003)

This thesis attempts to analyze the question of the relationship of trade and development, by looking at the impact of trade, and of trade policies on the development of a poor, mainly primary producing country, Myanmar, both during its period as a colony and during its period of independence up to recent times. The theory of free trade in the sense of unfettered trade leading to enhanced welfare of all participants in trade, has been a very important and influential theory and it enjoys a revival in recent times as the dominant discourse in economics. The theory also lies behind the trend towards reduction of barriers to trade, which has been institutionally codified into the WTO discipline. The thesis is divided into three main parts. In the first part comprising Chapters I to III, we look at the historical background against which the trade theory developed in Europe and at the actual trends of international trade in the 19th century and the 20th century involving the advanced countries and the developing countries, up to the point when world depression brought an end to the old regime of free trade and led to protectionism. Chapter I briefly reviews the development of international trade theory including the main ideas of the Mercantilists, Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage and the Heckscher- Ohlin -Samuelson theory. The specific assumption which is common to both the classical theory of comparative advantage and the more modern theory based on relative factor endowments, is that land as a productive factor is homogeneous across countries. But this assumption is not satisfied for trade in primary products, and hence the conclusion of the theories on the necessary gains from trade also becomes questionable. Chapter II studies the developing pattern of international trade over time starting from the 19th century. It discusses the growth of the international division of labour in which colonized countries were made to specialize in the 10 primary products most of which only they could grow, and today's advanced countries developed their industries using protection and relying on the imports of raw materials and food from primary producers. Chapter III studies the effects of trade policy and trade barriers on the economy. In reality, trade policies of most countries ultimately are found to lie between free trade and protection. The Classical economists held that free trade is better than no trade since it enlarged the possibilities of both production and consumption and widened the market. But it can also it threatens domestic agriculture and industries with subsidized foreign goods and unfair competition, increase dependence on imports, affect food security and may have negative effects on the terms of trade and balance of payments. Thus, most countries show a willingness to bear the positive impact of free trade on their economies without bearing its negative effects. All countries therefore impose trade restrictions through various forms of import control measures in order to achieve their political and social objectives. The effect of protective tariff on the economy is discussed in Chapter III., which also summarizes the changes in the world trading system brought about by the GATT negotiations and the WTO discipline. The second part of the thesis comprising Chapters IV to VI, is concerned specifically with the development of Myanmar. Chapter IV presents a historical perspective on the economic structure and the trends relating to Myanmar's growth and trade in the colonial period, and discusses in what respects if any the structure and trends altered in the post-independence period in line with changing policy regimes. In Chapter V, the categorization of Burma as a “least developed economy” in the UN system of classification of countries, and some comparison with other LDCs in Asia is presented, where we see that Burma’s social sector development indices were considerably better than other Asian LDCs. The common problems of LDCs in terms of external vulnerability and foreign exchange constraint on growth are discussed. Chapter VI studies in more detail Burma’s trade performance, starting in the colonial period, while an 11 overview is given of the impact on trade of the changing policy regimes in the post-independence period, both under the centralized planning of the “Burmese road to Socialism” and under the more deregulated and export oriented regime after 1988. The impact of the policy regime changes and of external factors beyond the country’s control, notably declining terms of trade, on Myanmar ‘s growth experience is discussed. The third part of the thesis comprises Chapters VII and VIII and is concerned with Myanmar's trade with its neighbours and its integration into ASEAN. Chapter VII discusses the commodity and country structure of Myanmar's trade with the world, and identifies its "revealed competitive advantage" in terms of the goods which account for a higher share of Myanmar's trade than they constitute of world trade. Border trade, including the re-export trade, which plays an increasingly significant role in trade Myanmar's trade with its neighbours, is analysed using an “export and import intensity index”. The last chapter deals with regional trade integration of Myanmar. The salient features of Myanmar's trade with ASEAN countries and the Southeast Asian countries generally are examined, as is the growing trade with India and China. The possible impact of AFTA Scheme on tariff revenue is assessed. Asia has been the fastest growing region in a world affected by recession. Northern advanced countries affected by recession (some also currently practice sanctions against Myanmar) are unlikely to provide the demand stimulus required for development and trade with them carries a built-in unequal status for a developing country exporting primary products, owing to the high subsidies given by them to their producers. The most hopeful prognosis for Myanmar's future development thus lies in closer economic integration with other Asian countries

Regional Cooperation in Transport: Myanmar Perspective on BIMSTEC, (Cho Cho Thein, 2008)

    Get PDF
BIMSTEC is a subregional grouping combining some geographically contiguous South Asian and ASEAN countries around the Bay of Bengal. The subregon has been facing tremendous challenges in order to enhance the merchandise trade. One of the major impediments that this subregion is facing is the lack of improved cross-border physical connectivity. To meet these challenges, this paper argues that BIMSTEC countries need to develop regional transportation and transit network that offers efficient transportation. This paper recommends that BIMSTEC countries should develop an effective transportation and transit facilitation system that will greatly reduce current physical and non-physical barriers to transportation and transit. The paper also suggests that by enhancing cooperation with developed economy like Japan will benefit the subregion in terms of transportation technology and infrastructure development

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
