This article introduces the short treatise by Yaḥyā ibn ʿAdī entitled On the explanation of the fact that both number and relation have essences that exist in numbered objects and relative things and their existence is not only in the imagination (Maqāla fī Tabyīn anna li- l-ʿadad wa-l-iḍāfa ḏātayn mawǧūdatayn fī l-maʿdūdāti wa-l-muḍāfāt wa anna laysa wuǧūduhumā fī-l-tawahhum faqaṭ). After a brief introduction to the author, the text is edited, translated and framed in the context of the scholastic tradition that links Late Antiquity to the philosophical activity of the Baġdād Aristotelian Circle in the 10th century. A bibliographical update on the author and his works is included in the appendix

Ana Cecilia Aliaga Fandino is first author on ‘Reprogramming of the cambium regulators during adventitious root development upon wounding of storage tap roots in radish (Raphanus sativus L.)’, published in BIO. Ana conducted the research described in this article while a Master's student in Ji-Young Lee's lab at Seoul National University, Republic of Korea. She is now a PhD student in the lab of Christian Hardtke at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, investigating developmental genetics in the root vascular system

Sense and Sensibility in a Pervasive World
The increasing popularity of location based social services such as Facebook Places, Foursquare and Google Latitude, solicits a new trend in fusing social networking with real world sensing. The availability of a wide range of sensing technologies in our everyday environment presents an opportunity to further enrich social networking systems with ?ne-grained real-world sensing. However, the introduction of passive sensing into a social networking application disrupts the traditional, user-initiated input to social services, raising both privacy and acceptability concerns. In this work we present an empirical study of the introduction of a sensor-driven social sharing application within the working environment of a research institution. Our study is based on a real deployment of a system that involves location tracking, conversation monitoring, and interaction with physical objects. By utilizing surveys, interviews and experience sampling techniques, we report on our ?ndings regarding privacy and user experience issues, and signi?cant factors that can affect acceptability of such services by the users. Our results suggest that such systems deliver signi?cant value in the form of self re?ection and comparison with others, while privacy concerns are raised primarily by the limited control over the way individuals are projected to their peers

Bone cell differentiation and mineralization in wild-type and osteogenesis imperfecta zebrafish are compromised by per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Abstract Perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) are well recognized toxic pollutants for humans, but if their effect is equally harmful for healthy and fragile people is unknown. Addressing this question represents a need for ensuring global health and wellbeing to all individuals in a world facing the progressive increase of aging and aging related diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) exposure on development and skeletal phenotype using the osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) zebrafish model Chihuahua (Chi/+), carrying a dominant glycine substitution in the α1 chain of collagen I and their wild-type (WT) littermates. To this purpose Chi/+ and WT zebrafish expressing the green fluorescent protein under the early osteoblast marker osterix were exposed from 1 to 6 days post fertilization to 0.36, 1.5 and 3.0 mg/L PFOS, 0.005 and 0.5 mg/L PFOA and 0.01, 0.48 and 16.0 mg/L PFHxA, and their development and skeletal phenotype investigated. Morphometric measurements, confocal microscopy evaluation of operculum area delimited by the fluorescent preosteoblasts and mineral deposition analysis following alizarin red staining were employed. PFOS and the highest concentration of PFHxA significantly impaired standard length in both genotypes. Osteoblast differentiation was significantly compromised by PFOS and by PFOA only in Chi/+. Limited to WT exposed to PFOA a reduced mineralization was also observed. No effect was detected after PFHxA exposure. Apoptosis was only activated by PFOA, specifically in Chi/+ mutant operculum osteoblasts. Interestingly, an altered lipid distribution in both WT and mutant fish was revealed after exposure to both pollutants. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that PFAS impair operculum development mainly compromising cell differentiation in mutant fish whereas alter lipid hepatic distribution in both genotypes with a more severe effect on Chi/+ preosteoblast survival. These results represent a first warning sign of the negative impact of PFAS exposure in presence of genetically determined skeletal fragility
Towards a Balanced Regime of Intellectual Property Rights for Agricultural Innovations
countries and intergovernmental organizations becoming members of—and thereby ratifying the framework provided by — the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). Nevertheless, in some countries there has been intense debate over whether to implement the most modern version of UPOV (i.e., the 1991 Convention, or UPOV 91). The example of Chile is paradigmatic, where UPOV 91 has been ratified by the national legislature but not yet signed into law by the President. The delay in Chile is at least in part the result of misunderstanding surrounding the changes that UPOV 91 could effect in the country. This article seeks to clarify misconceptions by comparing the most controversial provisions of UPOV 91 with its predecessor (i.e., the 1978 Convention, or UPOV 78). Additionally, the authors draw upon the example of public sector research institutions—especially the University of California, Davis—to demonstrate that the utilization of IP protections to incentivize agricultural innovation need not come at the expense of other socially beneficial goals
