Leaf partitioning of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica between two herbivores: is Sarpa salpa herbivory underestimated because of Paracentrotus lividus grazing?
No full textIn the Mediterranean region, herbivory appears to be a factor controlling the production of the endemic species Posidonia oceanica, which is mainly due to two main macroherbivores: the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, and the sparid fish Sarpa salpa. In this context the present study is a contribution in clarifying herbivory on P. oceanica by testing: 1) whether the abundance of grazing marks of the two herbivores is variable across different spatial scales, 2) whether spatial variation of P. lividus grazing marks and its density is consistent, 3) whether there is a dependence of the number of P. lividus grazing marks on its density, 4) whether the grazing of both macroherbivores, P. lividus and S. salpa, involves the entire leaf length, and 5) whether there is a dependence of the number of P. lividus grazing marks on the number of S. salpa grazing bites.
With this aim, the density of Paracentrotus lividus was estimated at six different locations around the Gulf of Alghero (Northwestern Sardinia, Italy). At each location, two areas were considered and within each area the number of P. lividus individuals was counted in 10 plots of dimensions 1 × 1 m each. The abundance of P. lividus and Sarpa salpa grazing marks was estimated on two shoots harvested at random in each plot. The number of P. lividus individuals varied greatly among the locations and between areas within each location. A sigmoid function was found to better describe the relation between P. lividus density and the number of its grazing marks. The distance class-frequency distribution of P. lividus grazing marks from the leaf base showed that this herbivore affected the length of the Posidonia oceanica leaf for about 700 mm, and that the attacks were concentrated at the lower portion of the leaf near the base. Conversely, a larger number of the S. salpa grazing bites were more frequently seen on the higher portions of the leaves, although attacks were found along the entire length. The reported data suggest that the two herbivores share the seagrass by partitioning the portions of the leaf they consume

No full textLa manifattura Lenci, fondata a Torino nel 1919 da Elena König e dal marito Enrico Scavini, si specializzò nella creazione di pupazzi e bambole in stoffa colorata, giocattoli in legno, capi di vestiario e articoli di moda, affiancando a questi anche una più ristretta produzione di mobili per camere di bambini e decorazioni per l’arredamento, progettati dai principali artisti chiamati nel corso degli anni a collaborare con la ditta. Il contributo analizza le invenzioni di Gigi Chessa, Mario Sturani e Giuseppe Porcheddu attraverso un corpus di disegni e di progetti tecnici conservati presso una collezione privata torinese, che consentono di mettere in evidenza la compresenza all’interno del repertorio Lenci di diversi orientamenti stilistici, partendo da arredi ispirati a forme e modelli del passato per arrivare alle sperimentazioni più vicine alle novità del Déco internazionale, fino a giungere alla tipica produzione in stile Lenci, caratterizzata da colori brillanti, forme originali e riferimenti iconografici desunti dal mondo delle fiabe e dell’infanzia

A Human Rights Approach to Environmental Health
No full textThis chapter explores the interface between health and the environment through the human rights prism, focusing on the environmental dimension of the right to health and on the now widely recognized right to a healthy, safe and clean environment. To this end, the chapter intends to offers a comprehensive analysis of the relevant provisions contained in human rights treaties and the obligations stemming therefrom. The review of these legal sources is completed by a critical assessment of the case law produced by regional human rights bodies and their evolutive interpretation of individual rights and corresponding State obligations in this field, with a special focus on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The aim of this legal analysis is to evaluate the added value of a human rights approach to environmental health litigation, with a view to best achieving the overarching goal of public health protection from environmental harm. The author highlights that human rights can be used in court as effective tools to protect public health against the adverse effects of environmental degradation and severe pollution. She also stresses that the potential of human rights bodies in the field of environmental health is yet fully unexpressed, but further positive developments towards the protection of collective and intergenerational rights related to the environment and human health can be achieved thanks to the dynamic and evolutive approach adopted by these bodies and through the virtuous circle created by judicial cross-fertilization
A Multitude of Women: The Challenges of the Contemporary Italian Novel
No full textA Multitude of Women looks at the ways in which both Italian literary tradition and external influences have assisted Italian women writers in rethinking the theoretical and aesthetic ties between author, text, and readership in the construction of the novel. Stefania Lucamante discusses the valuable contributions that Italian women writers have made to the contemporary novel and illustrates the relevance of the novelistic examples set by their predecessors. She addresses various discursive communities, reading works by Di Lascia, Ferrante, Vinci, and others with reference to intertextuality and the theories of Elsa Morante and Simone de Beauvoir.
This study identifies a positive deviation from literary and ideological orthodoxy, a deviation that helps give meaning to the Italian novel and to transform the traditional notion of the canon in Italian literature. Lucamante argues that this is partly due to the merits of women writers and their ability to eschew obsolete patterns in narrative while favoring forms that are more attuned to the ever-changing needs of society. She shows that contemporary novels by women authors mirror a shift from previous trends in which the need for female emancipation interfered with the actual literary and aesthetic significance of the novel. A Multitude of Women offers a new epistemology of the novel and will appeal to those interested in women's writing, readership, Italian studies, and literary studies in general

University School of Nurses and Health Carers later Hygienists was opened on 10 December 1925. The abovementioned term also refers to
the following nursing schools: University School of Nursing and Midwifery (1946-1951), Public School of Nursing and Midwifery (1949-1951), Public School Of Nursing (1950-1964), Public Medical School of Nursing (1964-1971), Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational
College No 1 (1971-1981), and Anna Rydlówna Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational College No 1 (1982-2001). The
school was localised in Cracow, 25 Kopernika St. until 1975, and then was moved to a new location - 12 Michałowskiego St. The aim of the study was the recollection of Stefania Poznańska, PhD, a nurse, teacher, tutor of nursing, author of multiple research studies
and publications, a person dedicated to the development of modern nursing, and last but not least, a great fiend.
The study material is based on a review of personal notes and archive materials gathered by the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery,
Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical Collage, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Also, personal recollections of multiple encounters
with Stefania Poznańska were taken into account. A biography-historical method as well as the review of documents were applied by
the authors. A significant contribution of Stefania Poznańska to the development of modern nursing must be emphasized. This contribution included her
work for the Programme Committee in Cracow for nursing education curriculum at university level as well as specific detailed programs regarding nursing history and ethical issues in nursing care, and the publication of a series of articles on new concept for teaching nursing
profession. Stefania Poznańska was a person open to another human being
