Seismic Vulnerability of Masonry Lighthouses: A Study of the Bengut Lighthouse, Dellys, Boumerdès, Algeria
In Algeria, lighthouses are an essential element of the maritime landscape and constitute a substantial part of the local historical and cultural heritage, marked by a great variety of styles, architecture, geometrical forms, and materials. The study presented falls into the general context of pre- and post-seismic conservation of Algerian lighthouses, since all these stone masonry buildings are situated in areas characterized by a medium–high seismic hazard. In the paper, a relevant example has been analyzed: the Bengut Lighthouse, which has been classified as “National Heritage” by the Algerian Ministry of Culture and has been severely damaged by the Boumerdès that occurred on 21 May 2003. After an overview of historical lighthouses in Algeria and their morpho-typological classification, the case study of the lighthouse at Cap Bengut is presented, showing the results of a detailed survey of the geometric and constructive features and of the actual cracking and damage pattern. First, based on the critical analysis of this knowledge framework, a preliminary qualitative evaluation of the seismic vulnerability has been made, analyzing and classifying the set of local and global failure modes coherently with the observed structural pathologies and damages. Then, numerical modeling has been implemented in TreMuri computer code, performing a set of pushover analyses. This allowed the investigation of the criticalities in the response of the building to seismic actions, characterization of the dynamic behavior, and comparison with the actual observed damages, which are discussed, providing an interpretation of the global and local failure modes. Based on the results of the visual assessment and numerical analysis, guidelines for the retrofitting intervention have been proposed, by considering, on the one hand, the objective of effectively mitigating the elements of vulnerability pointed out by the results and, on the other, the main principles of conservation and restoration. The presented study and its results, in perspective, are intended to provide a basis for developing risk and vulnerability analysis of typological classes of historical lighthouses at a large scale

Black English and the New Cosmopolitanism: Karima 2G’s Linguistic Creativity as a Transethnic Performative Practice
The article focuses on the powers of cultural expression in her chapter “Black English and the New Cosmopolitanism: Karima 2G’s Linguistic Creativity as a Transethnic Performative Practice.” The author takes as her primary text the linguistic per- formance of Anna Maria Gehnyei (“Karima 2G”), a second-generation Liberian immi- grant to Italy, whose “new cosmopolitan” rap performance and narration indexes the “linguistic and cultural history of the color line in Italy.” Karima 2G’s rap refracts a Pidgin English to both represent and complicate the racialized marginalization of black diasporic “geo-localities and linguistic identities” in Italy, and more generally to resist essentialisms of identity that reify categories of “race” and ethnicity. Anti- immigrant sentiment in Italy is as much her subject as her own Liberian background, which becomes the source of yet another expression of the postcolonialist “rooted cosmopolitanism” that is a connecting thread among many chapters in this volume. In her “ethno-socio-linguistic analysis,” the author explores, in a pluriversalist idiom, the transnational linkages cutting across national cultural musics and “plurilithic Englishes” across the African and European contexts, not to mention an at least imag- ined routing to the United States experience of slavery and its aftermath

Parents play a very important role in the online learning process, because parents directly monitor children at home, so with parental assistance at home, it is hoped that children will easily adapt and form disciplined characters in online learning. The theories used in this study include the theory of the main role played by parents in developing children's character (Zubaedi, 2011), the role of parents in assisting children's learning (Lailiyatul & Faridhatul, 2020), the formation of disciplined characters (Tu'u, 2004) and online learning (Alimuddin, Tawany, & Nadjib, 2015). The data collection tools that the author uses in this study are: observation, interviews, literature study and documentation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research with the subject of homeroom teachers, students and parents of grade 2 students at SDIT Insan Karima Nagrak Cangkuang. The results of this study include: the role of parents in developing the disciplined character of children in online learning is done by accompanying children during learning and trying to be a learning partner at home, being a motivator, facilitator so as to create a comfortable learning atmosphere, and giving rewards in the form of gifts that are useful for students. child. Constraints experienced by parents of SDIT Insan Karima students include lazy children in doing assignments, too busy with gadgets, bored, bored and easily distracted by other activities at home. The conclusion of this study is that parents of grade 2 SDIT Insan Karima students successfully carried out their role as parents in online learning companions well. This has an impact on student achievement and activity during online learning
The use of concurrent engineering methodologies : achieving world class product development performance in the automobile industry : executive summary
This research project is about product development strategy and practice in the
automobile industry. Specifically, it concerns the transformation of Rover Group
body and tool development capability over four years from 1993 to 1997.
A single Rover Body and Pressings organisation was created in 1991. It
encompassed the functions of Body Engineering, Press Tool Engineering, and
Press Tool Manufacturing. As Engineering Director the Author had the
opportunity to directly influence a significant portion of the body product
creation process.
At the start of the research period the product development performance of
Rover Body and Pressings was weak. Major investments in new press equipment
could not depend on in-house die technology. Quality and cost delivery
incurred customer dissatisfaction.
Resulting from the research are three innovations:
The Engineering Quality Assurance Procedure was implemented as a
disciplined stage/gate quality management system.
A focused manufacturing strategy was implemented for die manufacturing
based on die size.
A new engineering design methodology was established utilising the
scientific principles of metal forming technology as an integrated element in
the design process.
These innovations were applied within the strategic framework of a new model
describing a system view of the product creation process for body, at enterprise
level.
The new product development process strategy was partially applied to two new
vehicle programmes. One vehicle has since been initiated and delivered from
within the new framework.
Strategic targets were defined for product development at Rover Body and
Pressings covering product quality, development lead time, press tool cost and
programme financial budget. The targets for quality and lead time were met
during the research period. Although substantial progress is evident in physical
performance the targets for press tool cost and programme budget were not met.
The major elements of the product development strategy applied in this research
remain in place. The transfer of the strategic model of concurrent engineering to
a wider context was demonstrated by applying it as part of the Rover Group
product development reengineering project
Quand on vient aussi de l’autre monde: appartenance(s), conflit(s) et déchirement(s) dans L’enfant des deux mondes de Karima Berger
My essay analyzes Karima Berger’s first novel, L’enfant des deux mondes (1989). The author who has been living in France for more than 25 years tells the story of a Muslim Arab girl (herself ?) educated in the French school system of pre-independent Algeria. In this study, I examine linguistic, cultural and religious issues raised by the novel in an effort to identify the factors that keep the protagonist imprisoned in a permanent state of being in-between-two-worlds without fully belonging to any of them
