Holistic Human Conception in Athlete-Centered Coaching : Creating a New Coaching Philosophy for a Sports Instructor and Personal Trainer
The purpose of this thesis was to explore what is athlete-centred coaching and how to recognize and explain the holistic human concept that occurs in physical education and sports. The aim for the author as a student was to investigate the topic since it was relatively unknown and another aim was to gain competence as a graduating student, since this work strengthened competences in skill-wise relevant didactics and pedagogy. The thesis developed the author’s capability of goal setting with diverse people, as well as understanding the ability of physical education as a tool for educating people in a holistic way that supports human growth and enhancement. The thesis was considered a learning process.
The commissioning party is my trade name, Leena Hietanen Tmi, sole trader. The aim for the commissioning party was to create a new coaching philosophy that acts as a guideline. I, and therefore the commissioning party, intend to enhance expertise in coaching. Via this work, the commissioning party saw an opportunity to value growth, and moreover, deepen the understanding about the topic. The athlete-centred coaching style is demanding for both the coach and the athlete; therefore, it is important to understand what the methods are to influence athlete’s performance and development. It is essential to recognize psychological aspects in this context.
The thesis was conducted with a qualitative research method and approach. The strategy of the research was a literature review. The type of the literature review was meta-analysis, and the orientation was meta synthesis. In the meta synthesis, new phrases based on previous studies were created considering the topic in a more interpretative and descriptive way. The technique was hermeneutic, where the author wanted to comprehend and rationalize the phenomena. In the end, the goal was to create a convincing and fresh outcome.
Three main categories for holistic human concept and athlete-centred coaching were discovered in the literature. The main themes were holistic human development, encouraging environment and coach´s role and ethics. Three new statements were gathered from the previous studies and a new coaching philosophy was formed: promote careful development; meaningful outcomes; and accept the coach’s and the athlete´s responsibility and offer freedom to decide. In addition, develop goal setting skills and create an encouraging environment.
In general, it would be interesting to study the responsibility of the coach and the athlete in holistic athlete-centred coaching in the future, since it has been described in a different way in studies by different authors. Moreover, since this coaching style does not promote winning at all costs, is it still successful in gaining competitive results across all sports around the world in different cultures

Music and elite identity in the English country house, c.1790-1840
In this thesis I investigate two untapped music book collections that belonged to two women. Elizabeth Sykes Egerton (1777-1853) and Lydia Hoare Acland (1786-1856) lived at Tatton Park, Cheshire, and Killerton House, Devon, respectively. Upon their marriage in the early nineteenth century, they brought with them the music books they had compiled so far to their new homes, and they continued to collect and play music after marriage. I examine the vocal music in Elizabeth’s and Lydia’s collections, and I aim to show how selected vocal music repertoires contributed toward the construction of landed elite identity in these women and their husbands, concentrating on gender, class, national identity and religion. In chapter one, I concentrate on songs that depict destitute and suffering individuals to move both listeners and performers to compassion. The songs are topical and provide insights into contemporary understandings of sympathy and landed elite responsibility for the distressed. In chapter two, I focus on the ingoing and outgoing movements of music in the country house, and the consumption of foreign music in the home. I divide the chapter into two sections, first examining Elizabeth’s Italian vocal music that she collected during her girlhood years in London and York in the 1790s. The Italian music that Elizabeth brought to Tatton complemented other Italian objects and items in the home. Italian culture appealed to the Egerton family both before and after Elizabeth and Wilbraham married. In the second section, I investigate Lydia and her family’s journey to Vienna for the Congress in 1814-1815. Lydia took away with her a book of vocal music to remind her of home in a foreign environment. While away in Vienna, the Aclands attended concerts and music salons, and they purchased music books to bring back home to add to their collection. In the final chapter, I concentrate on the man of the house at music and I consider the social expectations, duties and responsibilities that had befallen our landed elite men, Thomas Dyke Acland and Wilbraham Egerton. I discuss Thomas’s and Wilbraham’s musical engagements and occasions for performing music, and how men’s music-making contributed to a masculine identity.By placing the vocal music in broader social and cultural contexts, reading personal correspondence, newspaper articles, account books and diaries, we can begin to understand what our families thought about music, and how they used and experienced music in and around their homes, forming an important part of their lifestyle
Association analyses of 249,796 individuals reveal 18 new loci associated with body mass index
Obesity is globally prevalent and highly heritable, but its underlying genetic factors remain largely elusive. To identify genetic loci for obesity susceptibility, we examined associations between body mass index and similar to 2.8 million SNPs in up to 123,865 individuals with targeted follow up of 42 SNPs in up to 125,931 additional individuals. We confirmed 14 known obesity susceptibility loci and identified 18 new loci associated with body mass index (P < 5 x 10(-8)), one of which includes a copy number variant near GPRC5B. Some loci (at MC4R, POMC, SH2B1 and BDNF) map near key hypothalamic regulators of energy balance, and one of these loci is near GIPR, an incretin receptor. Furthermore, genes in other newly associated loci may provide new insights into human body weight regulation
Metamorphosis in franz kafka's “metamorphosis” and leena krohn's “tainaron”.
This thesis analyses metamorphosis as a literary phenomenon that involves physical and soul transformations. Drawing on Ovid's poem "Metamorphosis" and other scholarly works, the theme of metamorphosis is explored in Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and Leena Krohn's "Tainaron". The comparison between Gregor Samsa and the author of the letters aims to clarify the different aspects of the transformation from human to insect: the changes in body, soul, language, and belonging to the community. The analysis highlights the incomplete metamorphosis in Gregor's case, contrasting with the complete metamorphosis of the letter writer. This study is significant in explaining the mechanisms of the metamorphosis from human to insect in different works
Nyt ja tulevaisuudessa: Tieteisfiktion kaksi tulkinnan kategoriaa ja Leena Krohnin Pereat munduksen tulkinnallinen ambiguiteetti
In the Present, in the Future: Two Categories of SF Interpretation, and the Ambiguity of Leena Krohn’s Pereat mundus
The genre of science fiction is commonly separated into two different categories: the extrapolative and the analogical/speculative SF. Traditionally, the extrapolative pole of SF has consisted of scenarios which appear to have a high probability of actually happening. The speculative branch of science fiction, for its part, has trusted on a discontinuative leap toward an entirely other state of affairs. The worlds of speculative SF exist in analogical relation with the empirical world of the author, eliciting metaphorical or allegorical readings that are not predicated upon the linear logic of “if this goes on”.
Today, it often appears difficult to maintain this seemingly crucial distinction between the extrapolative and the speculative branches of the genre. The new possibilities opened up by scientific advances in such fields as computer science, nanotechnology or genetic engineering are often so extensive in their scope that even the near-future scenarios of real science are taking more and more speculative forms. This article examines the relationship between the two categories of SF interpretation and recognizes the role of both analogical and prefactual elements in the genre. The issue is further examined through the example of Leena Krohn’s Pereat mundus. Romaani eräänlainen (1998). I argue that the opening chapter of the book is based on both prefactual and analogical elements, and that the unavoidable ambiguity between the two categories is intrinsic to the work
The Fall and Rise of Cotton Yarn ‘Manja’
In the twenty-first century, managing organizational change has become one of the critical issues for the success of any organization. Dynamic changes in the business environment post liberalization, privatization and globalization in India have escalated organizational competition holistically. Moreover, changing government policies, recent technological advancements and increased management pressure to reduce costs have reshaped the entire organizational dynamics. Researchers suggest that creativity and innovation have an important role to play in the transition process of organizations to survive, it is in fact the ‘survival of fittest’ (Chatterjee, 2014). While technological innovation plays the key role in business growth, the success of management depends upon the effective utilization and allocation of resources which are necessary to bring out technological change (Dasgupta, Gupta, & Sahay, 2011). Hence, in order to survive in this competitive market, strategic implementation and management of organizational change have become pivotal for the organization’s survival. This case study explicitly explores and identifies the impact of environmental changes on the small-scale cotton yarn industry in India. Particularly, this study focuses on the changing demand of the cotton yarn ‘manja’ (a specific kind of processed, traditional cotton strings coated with glass to fly kites) in the Indian market against the high competition of the less expensive Chinese ‘manja’ (flying strings for kites made up of nylon and coated with iron, glass and metallic powder) and also as a result of recent favourable government policies to save the indigenous cotton yarn industry of India. Primary data has been collected from the strategic apex as well as from the middle management of the organization through interviews using open-ended and semi-structured questions. Secondary data such as government reports and news articles have also been used to understand the changing business trend in the cotton yarn industry in India. In a sense, the case focuses on two important factors stimulating organizational changes: (a) global competition affecting local business and (b) changes in government policies. Various organizational change models and theories have been used to understand the context of the case and critical strategies have been identified to effectively implement and manage the organizational change in light of the dynamic environmental upheaval. </jats:p
Literary translation as language contact : a pilot study on the Finnish passive
This article approaches literary translation from a contact-linguistic perspective and views translation as a language contact situation in which the translator "moves" between the source and target language. The study touches upon the possible linguistic effects of the source text on the translated text and relates the translation-mediated cross-linguistic influence to other language-contact situations. The study investigates the use of Finnish passive in a corpus of literary texts consisting of Finnish translations from Estonian and German and comparable non-translated Finnish literary texts. The translated texts are compared with non-translated ones by using corpus-linguistic tools, and the results are related to a previous contact-linguistic study on the use of the Finnish passive in spoken interviews of Finnish migrants in Estonia. The main objective is to test methodological tools that could be used for this kind of comparative purposes.
In addition, the study approaches the question whether translation as a type of language contact affects the use of the Finnish passive in a similar way as an oral language contact situation. All in all, the study shows that there are some features that differentiate the investigated literary translations from non-translated Finnish texts but the evidence is not unambiguous. The article discusses the possible reasons for the mainly non-conclusive results of the analysis and points out factors that should be taken into account in future studies, such as the size of the sub-corpora and the possibly biased text or genre specific stylistic characteristics. The methodology clearly has to be adjusted and more in-depth methods developed in order to acquire a fuller picture of the Finnish passive in literary texts and to confirm what is author, translator, genre or source-language specific in the use of the Finnish passive
The Little Heroine in Defense of Nature in Leena Krohn’s Children of the Sun
The essay focuses on the narrative representation of the child in relationship with nature in the story for the childhood Auringon lapsia (Children of the sun, 2011) of the Finnish author Leena Krohn. Krohn reflects on the world view and creates an emotional bond that reinforces a sense of unity between nature and humanity through imagination. In Finnish children's literature, interest in mythology and folk traditions has developed since the 1970’s. The elements of the Finno-Ugric tradition have been used in contemporary Finnish literature in relation to current issues such as social or environ- mental problems and the means of adaptation to a constantly changing world. In Children of the sun the pantheistic and animistic elements transmit consideration of otherness and respect of nature in children.
Making sense of personal and global problems: an analysis of the writings and lectures of Rauni-Leena Luukanen-Kilde
Rauni-Leena Luukanen-Kilde (b. 1939) is a well-known figure in the Finnish alternative spiritual milieu. She is an author and lecturer on parapsychology and ufology and has been a guest on several talk shows in the Nordic countries. The topics discussed by Luukanen-Kilde range from the psychic abilities of mankind to visitations from extraterrestrial beings. Since the mid-1980s Luukanen-Kilde has developed conspiracy theories about an elite group governing the world in secret. Luukanen-Kilde is a bestselling author and draws audiences of several hundreds to her talks. Her conspiracy theory view of the world offers explanations for all kinds of personal, national, as well as global problems and disasters. Personal health problems, tragic incidents such as school shootings, economic crises and unemployment, earthquakes and floods can, according to her belief system, all be attributed to a single cause; namely to the actions of a clandestine, malevolent group. The popularity of Luukanen-Kilde’s books and lectures can be seen as an example of how people in late modernity are seeking alternative interpretations of themselves and of world events.
