Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2016.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 94-104).Rehabilitation of human motor function is an issue of utmost significance affecting millions of Americans. Robot-aided therapy emerged as a promising method to meet the increasing demand for effective rehabilitation services. While robot-aided therapy for upper-extremity provides clinically-proven, efficient rehabilitation, human-interactive robots for lower-extremity therapy have been substantially less successful. Given the labor-intensive nature of conventional, human-administered walking therapy, effective robot-aided assistance is urgently needed. The use of robots and treadmills that may inadvertently suppress the expression of the natural oscillatory dynamics of walking is addressed in this thesis as a possible explanation for the ineffectiveness of robotic walking therapy. To further investigate the natural oscillatory dynamics of walking, the existence and provenance (spinal or central) of a neuro-mechanical oscillator underlying human locomotion was assessed. This oscillator was studied via gait entrainment to periodic mechanical perturbations at the ankle in both treadmill and overground environments. Experiments with unimpaired human subjects provided direct behavioral evidence of the non-negligible contribution to human walking made by a limit-cycle oscillator in the spinal neuro-mechanical periphery. Entrainment was always accompanied by phase-locking so that plantar-flexion perturbations assisted propulsion during ankle 'push-off' while dorsi-flexion perturbations assisted toe-clearance during 'initial swing'. The observed behavior seemed to require a neural adaptation that could not easily be ascribed to biomechanics, suggesting a hierarchical organization between the supra-spinal nervous system and the spinal neuro-mechanical periphery: episodic supervisory control.by Julieth Ochoa.S.M

This study is part of a corpus of recent narratives that represent contemporary migratory displacements from a geographical perspective that aims to highlight and problematize the borders in Latin America.  This research works with the following works: Desierto sonoro (2019) by the Mexican author Valeria Luiselli and Ciudad berraca (2018) by the Chilean author Rodrigo Ramos. We are interested in investigating in these writings the imaginaries that are constructed from the displacements to and from the border, focusing not only on the physical spatiality of the territory, but also on a set of knowledge and narrative strategies that make the borderlands more complex in both novels.O presente estudo enmarca-se em um corpus de narrativas recentes que representam os deslocamentos migratórios contemporâneos desde um olhar geográfico que aponta a evidenciar e problematizar as fronteiras em América Latina. The Influence of Supply Chain Practices on Health Service Delivery under the National Health Insurance Fund Scheme: A Case of Selected Hospitals in Tanzania

    No full text
The study aimed to examine the influence of supply chain practices (process integration, agile practices, and strategic partnerships) on health service delivery under the NHIF scheme in selected hospitals in Tanzania. The research utilized a cross-sectional design, enabling data collection from 189 employees in a single snapshot at a specific moment. These participants were drawn from five selected hospitals under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme within Dodoma city. Data were collected using structured questionnaires scaled to a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1(strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) and then analyzed using multiple regression techniques. Findings show that the independent variables collectively account for 41.1% of the variance in the dependent variable. The best predictor of the dependent variable is strategic partnership practices which have a standardized coefficient of 0.484; p =0.001 followed by agile supply chain practice with a beta coefficient of 0.342; p 0.011, and lastly process integration practices with a beta coefficient of 0.297; p=0.019 whereby the variables in totality calls for the need to continue prioritizing the effective supply chain practices, given their substantial positive impact on health service delivery. The study provides novelty by linking key variables of supply chain practices with health service delivery under the NHIF scheme in the Tanzanian context as an area overlooked by other studies

The generation of solid waste is perhaps one of the most complex problems and in greater quantity, which directly affect the environment and public health. Hospitals, being large generators of waste of all kinds, especially hazardous waste, must ensure an optimal disposition of them and the welfare of their patients and their staff. (Res 1164 of 2002).The foundation for the prevention of risks related to hospital waste is its proper management and disposal, from separation at source by medical and paramedical personnel, through each of the stages of management, to its treatment and final disposal (Law 430 of 1998). These processes must be appropriate and governed by the standard, from the differential treatment that is given to each type of waste at the source, deactivation, through proper storage and delivery to companies that have this finally (Department District Administrative Department of the Environment - DADIMA, 2002).The Hospital of the Misericordia, Foundation HOMI is a private institution, dedicated specifically to the diagnosis and treatment of highly complex diseases in children. The hospital, as a provider of health services must have a comprehensive management plan for hospital waste and similar defined, follow the letter of the current legal norm, have trained personnel for the management of the environmental area and its related, have an optimal environmental policy, promote the proper use of natural resources, encourage savings and efficient use of water, vector control, among others. (HOMI 2018)In this order of ideas, the focus of the work to be carried out is based on the support as a technologist in environmental management and public services, in the whole area regarding the monitoring and control of the processes carried out with the solid waste generated in the hospital (AUTHOR).Fundación Hospital De La Misericordi
