Experiential learning: An exploration of the effect of Zen experience on personal transformation
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This inquiry started by examining my own and others experience of Zen, and comparing it with Self Organised Learning. The aim was to see what effect each system had on the lives of the participants. The thesis plots how I had a tacit reliance on myself as a measuring instrument, and how this became an integrating theme running through my 'finally chosen' methods. The methodological difficulties caused by the paradox of trying to understand Zen and also be scientific converged when I realised that I had treated myself as the central measuring instrument throughout the inquiry. It was this discovery which allowed the thesis to be treated as a koan from a Zen perspective and yet to be a contribution to academic knowledge. The thesis traces how personal authenticity became the defining characteristic informing all my methodology.
This inquiry asks and answers the question can research be transpersonal? Initially the research started out looking at a transpersonal issue in the form of asking those who had regular interactions with a Zen master about their experience. This learning curve was contrasted with Learning Conversations with postgraduates at the centre for the Study of Human Learning, using inner directed learning in their research projects. During the research process, several major re-orientations took place which, necessitated changing my method and my interpretation of the data. These shifts of direction were largely driven by a need to find a method of inquiry which was appropriate to uncovering the transpersonal qualities I was investigating. As the inquiry developed I widened my sources of data to include art, fiction, accounts of death and grieving, and satsang (questions and answers with a master) in order to give an in depth picture of the impact of the transpersonal on participants' lives.
In treating the thesis as a koan there can be no emphasis placed on which purposes related to which outcomes. It was in the gradual abandonment of such a stance that the deeper insights and resolutions occurred. During the inquiry I eventually identified the qualities of wholeness, authenticity and openness as the defining characteristics which appeared to trigger changes in direction. Such an approach made it necessary to examine the implications for validity that approaching transpersonal issues in this way had uncovered
Metaphysics of 空 (śūnyatā: emptiness).Western analytical approach to Zen philosophy
Zen is a coherent system of philosophically plausible ideas. But Zen is often misunderstood to be anti-analytical or illogical. This is due to its core concept 空 (śūnyatā; emptiness). It is an idea that our experience and knowledge do not correctly represent the way the world is. 空 (emptiness) is not, however, a nihilistic concept. Zen believes that recognising our limitation and identifying our miscomprehension enable us to grasp the way the world really is (如; tathāta). The denial of our ordinary knowledge is, therefore, key to attain 悟 (bodhi; the enlightenment) and ultimately leads us to be liberated from 苦 (dukha; suffering). This thesis therefore concentrates on negating our metaphysical beliefs that shape our fundamental world view. In order to make this thesis accessible to western readers who has little or no knowledge of eastern philosophy, I will pick up only conclusion from Zen and try to reach the same conclusion using arguments which western philosophers are familiar with. I hope this will demystify Zen and, in future it will be studies in other branches of philosophy and as a sub-category of eastern or world philosophy
John Cage e a poética do silêncio
The Last Time I Saw Fritz
Zen is not merely an exotic practice imported from the Orient; it is the constantly fresh
realization ofTrue Nature everywhere and at every time. So, it may be expected that sparks
of Zen will be found in all cultures. Hence, having been engaged with Zen practice since 1964,
the author reminisces here about how he turned to Zen after his study of Gestalt psychology
and his encounter with Gestalt therapy in the person ofFritz Perls. Gestalt therapy as usually
practiced is not Zen, the author concludes. But if it clears the way for a glimmer of the Self
which has no need of therapy, then Gestalt is excellent preparation for Zen

ORTIZ, HUGO PADELETTI Y ARTURO CARRERA
This dissertation investigates how Juan L Ortiz (1896-1978), Hugo Padeletti (1928), and Arturo Carrera (1948), interpret and represent Chinese classical and Zen Buddhist systems of thinking in their poetry, in 20th century Argentina. I argue that these authors share a common aesthetical and philosophical goal in their interpretations of Chinese, and Japanese systems of thinking portrayed in their poetry. They are seeking philosophical and aesthetical alternatives to Eurocentric Modernity. In order to achieve this, these three authors lean in their poetry towards the dissolution of the self, passivity, contemplation, silence and exposure to the outside. Nonetheless, their interpretations of these Chinese and Japanese systems of thinking change relative to the way in which they react to historical, social, cultural and political events that shaped their cultural contexts. \ud
My investigation involves a close reading of the poetry of each author in the context of contemporary literary currents in 20th Century Argentina, in order to trace differences, and similarities, as well as individual specificities in their interpretations and representations of classical Chinese and Zen Buddhist verbal aesthetics and thought. The purpose of this research is to explore how, alongside during the 20th century, these Argentinian poets critique European Modernity in Argentina, through recurring to orientalism, as an alternative model to the Cartesian Rationalism and the other ideologies associated to the dominant discourse of progress
Bedeutung und Bekämpfung von Schadinsekten an Winterweizen und Winterraps in Schleswig-Holstein, 1999-2001, und der Trend der Insektizid-Behandlungen von 1999-2004
In the average of 1999 to 2004 winter wheat covered 64 % of the agricultural land of Schleswig-Holstein (331.000 ha), winter oilseed rape 31 %. These two important crops (covering 95 % of the acreage) were attacked in 1999 to 2001 by a) wheat: cereal leaf beetles (Oulema spp.Col., Chrysomelidae) and by cereal aphids (mainly Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum; Hom., Aphididae; b) Oilseed rape: by pollen beetles (Meligethes aeneus F.; Col., Nitidulidae) and by the cabbage seed weevil Ceutorrhynchus assimlis (Payk.) (Col., Curculionidae). Studies (with six field experiments per crop, at two sites, 1999 to 2001) were done by the first author in the course of the work on a PhD thesis (Kirch 2006) to clarify the economic importance of these pests, and to look for the validity of the action thresholds published. Additionally, 51 farmers were inquired for their insecticide use, 1999 to 2004.Winterweizen bedeckte 1999-2004 64 % der Ackerfläche Schleswig-Holsteins, Winterraps 31 %.
Toxicokinetics of Zearalenone following Oral Administration in Female Dezhou Donkeys
Zearalenone (ZEN) is a mycotoxin produced by various Fusarium strains, that is present in food and feed raw materials worldwide, causing toxicity effects in animals and humans. This research aimed to explore the toxicokinetics of ZEN on female Dezhou donkeys following a single oral exposure dosage of 2 mg/kg BW (body weight). The sample collection of donkeys plasma was carried out at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90 min, 2 h, 2.5 h, 3 h, 3.5 h, 4 h, 4.5 h, 6 h, 9 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h and 120 h via intravenous catheter, and fecal and urinary samples were severally collected at 0 h and every 6 h until 120 h. The concentrations of ZEN, α-zearalenol (α-ZOL), β-zearalenol (β-ZOL), α-zearalanol (α-ZAL), β-zearalanol (β-ZAL), zearalanone (ZAN) in plasma, urine, and feces were detected by UPLC-MS/MS. Only ZEN was detected in plasma, and the maximum was 15.34 ± 5.12 µg/L occurred at 0.48 h after gavage. The total plasma clearance (Cl) of ZEN was 95.20 ± 8.01 L·kg·BW−1·h−1. In addition, the volume of distribution (Vd) was up to 216.17 ± 58.71 L/kg. The percentage of total ZEN (ZEN plus the main metabolites) excretion in feces and urine was 2.49% and 2.10%, respectively. In summary, ZEN was fast absorbed and relatively slowly excreted in female donkeys during 120 h after a single gavage, indicating a trend of wider tissue distribution and longer tissue persistence
Future city visions - The energy transition towards carbon-neutrality – Lessons learned from the case of roeselare, Belgium
As climate change develops, with most of the world population living in urban areas, decarbonisation of cities is among the greatest challenges of the coming decades. In the framework of the EU City-zen project, a number of so-called Roadshows has been organised in ten cities within and outside Europe in order to plan and kick-off their transition towards an energy- and climate-neutral economy. During the Roadshows, a group of experts is engaged to perform co-working activities and participative labs involving local stakeholders. These activities support cities in identifying their own decarbonisation pathways, mainly by combining three mutual processes, i.e. energy design, urban design and carbon accounting. The latter, in particular, has been used to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions of cities and neighbourhoods and to estimate the mitigation effect of a combination of measures towards the desirable condition of carbon neutrality. This exploratory and proactive design process has been successfully demonstrated through intensive workshops and can be potentially replicated in other cities. This paper provides a schematic overview of the main results achieved in the Belgian town of Roeselare, but more significantly it describes the techniques needed to make that cooperative process understandable, impactful and implementable. It is likely that 2050 European goals will drastically change urban environments and socio-economic dynamics in cities, due to the fragmentation of energy sources. Hence, from this standpoint there is a vital need for integrated technologies and infrastructures, a circular economy and community-based processes such as food production, sharing of facilities and valorisation of ecosystem services.
The City-zen Roeselare Roadshow brought over 300 stakeholders into the process of re-imagining and visualising their 2050 future city with these solutions. Stakeholders, with no particular expertise in carbon accounting or sustainability, would now have the capability of understanding and applying these solutions in a combined effort to meet the zero-carbon challenge. The approach is generally replicable elsewhere being highly visual, impactful, transferable, and multi-stakeholder friendly. Given that data are made locally available, the combination of this general approach, site-specific assessments and the involvement of both experts and local stakeholders (i.e. policy makers, citizens, etc) allow the transition to start by referring to any real city or neighbourhood
Influences of Various Non-Essential Amino Acids on the Hematopoiesis Part 1. Influences of various non-essential amino acids on leucocyte growth in rabbit bone marrow tissue culture
By adding such substances as polytamine, a derivative of amino acids (a by-product of caseous fermentation of cow's milk), by-product of cow's milk caseous hydrolysis with acid, and ten different non-essential amino acids contained in polytamine directly to rabbit bonemarrow tissue culture, the author estimated the tissue growth area and cell density and studied influences of these substances on the production of the leucocyte series in the bone marrow. The results are as follows. 1. Both polytamine and by-product of cow's milk caseous hydrolysis with acid can increase the growth area slightly more than the control only in a high concentration. 2. With addition of L-hydroxyproline in the concentration from 0.1 to 0.0001 per cent, this substance in any concentration within this range increases the growth area and cell density 2-3 times that of the control, showing the greatest values among amino acids used in the present experiment. 3. Both L-proline and L-arginine in high concentration increase the growth area twice the control, and slightly at low concentration. 4. L-Cysteine, L-tyrodine, and DL-serine each in a proximal concentration can only increase the growth area slightly more than the control. 5. L-Aspartic acid and L-glutamic acid, glycine, and L-ornithine show hardly any significant difference as compared with the control
