Positive solutions to indefinite problems: a topological approach
This book is devoted to the study of positive solutions to indefinite problems. The monograph intelligibly provides an extensive overview of topological methods and introduces new ideas and results. Sticking to the one-dimensional setting, the author shows that compelling and substantial research can be obtained and presented in a penetrable way. In particular, the book focuses on second order nonlinear differential equations. It analyzes the Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary value problems associated with the equation and provides existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results for positive solutions. The author proposes a new approach based on topological degree theory that allows him to answer some open questions and solve a conjecture about the dependence of the number of positive solutions on the nodal behaviour of the nonlinear term of the equation. The new technique developed in the book gives, as a byproduct, infinitely many subharmonic solutions and globally defined positive solutions with chaotic behaviour. Furthermore, some future directions for research, open questions and interesting, unexplored topics of investigation are proposed
Sixty years after the publication of Umberto Eco's "Apocalyptic and Integrated," his observations on seriality, particularly in comics, remain highly relevant. Eco recognized the importance of serial storytelling in mass culture, highlighting how it builds cyclical forms of repetition that reinforce the mythology of characters without altering their essence. This approach to seriality can also be applied to contemporary productions, such as TV series and new media, where repetition and continuous variation are key to maintaining audience interest. Eco's insights into the dynamic stasis of serial characters and the cyclical structure of narratives offer valuable tools for analyzing today's narrative dynamics, demonstrating the persistence of these structures in the contemporary media landscape. His analyses provide a still-valid framework for understanding modern seriality

‘Mediterranean capitalism’ under EU pressure: Labour market reforms in Spain and Italy, 2010-12
The article follows the recent developments in the labour markets of Spain and Italy. The two countries in focus represent the 'Mediterranean model' of capitalism, in line with the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) approach. The impact of the global economic recession has been severe in both countries, which is reflected in high and rising unemployment figures. In the two countries, profound institutional reforms were implemented under pressure of the European Union (EU) prior to the crisis, yet the process has also continued after the onset of the recession. Using the field of labour relations as the example, the author looks at the tensions emerging between the embedded forms of capitalism (national context) and the 'disembedded' forms of capitalism which are imposed from above (EU context)
Critical Flights Detected with Time Windows
Airlines need to pay special attention to flights that may be liable to produce undesired downstream effects if subject to delays. This paper proposes a mathematical formulation to identify these critical flights by defining a set of temporal intervals, called time windows, which must be met during the flight execution. The width of the time windows is variable as it reflects all known constraints on runway capacities and/or on congested en-route sectors that the flight will go through. We choose the set of optimal time windows that maximizes their overall width, thus providing airline operators with the largest degree of flexibility to perform their flights. We present three possible approaches to compute the utilization of the system capacity. By means of a computational analysis, we show that the solution of the time window model is insensitive with respect to the formulation used for the capacity constraints
