Don Carlo Colombo e padre Agostino Gemelli: scienza, politica, teologia
No full textCarlo Colombo è stato un punto di riferimento per l’Università Cattolica sin dai tempi di padre Gemelli, che ha visto in lui una sorta di “coscienza” teologica cui l’ateneo poteva far riferimento. In Colombo il rettore scorgeva una sponda teologica sicura con cui rimediare alla mancanza di un contesto universitario capace di confrontare le acquisizioni teologiche con gli scottanti problemi della contemporaneità scientifica e sociopolitica. Tramite l’analisi di documentazione inedita e lo studio degli interventi del teologo di Venegono nelle pubblicazioni dell’Università Cattolica, il saggio permette di cogliere l’importanza di questa collaborazione, sinergica ad alcuni punti nodali della prospettiva ideologica di Gemelli e decisiva per divulgare l’interpretazione del magistero pontificio che era avallata dal gruppo direttivo dell’ateneo. Ne risultano nuovi acquisizioni anche su Carlo Colombo, nel suo affrancarsi da schemi ideologici e storiografici che sono inadeguati a spiegarne la figura. Si fa poi nuova luce sull’Istituto Giuseppe Toniolo di studi superiori, ente fondatore e finanziatore dell’Università Cattolica, sulla questione della Facoltà di Teologia, sull’apertura a sinistra e sui rapporti di Giovanni Battista Montini con l’ateneo milanese.Carlo Colombo has been a key figure for the Catholic University ever since Father Gemelli saw in him a theological conscience to which the University could refer. It was this conscience that, according to him, could lead the University in the confrontation with the most relevant contemporary scientific and socio-political issues. The importance of this collaboration is highlighted through the analysis of unpublished documentation and through the study of the theologian’s contributions to the University’s publications. This relevance was further reinforced by the synergy with Gemelli’s ideological perspective. Furthermore, the partnership with Colombo was decisive in order to divulge the Directive Board’s interpretation of Pontifical teaching. Through new acquisitions on Colombo’s figure, the essay reveals the inadequacy of ideological and historiographical schemas used to portray him in the past.
Finally the essay casts new light on the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute for Higher Education, the University’s founding and financing institution, as well as on some controversial issues such as the relations between Giovanni Battista Montini and the Milan campus

No full textThis study is dedicated to Carlo Colombo, professor and Director of the Facoltà Teologica di Venegono in Milan, 30 years from his death (February 11th 1991). Rereading the years of his priestly ministry, the article seeks to pick out those elements which allow us to grasp the meaning and importance of his Episcopal nomination which came about in the middle of the Second Vatican Council. An unpublished «correspondence» with Carlo Figini and other documents offer, in the second part of the article, a first-hand view of the event by the theologian. Within this research as a whole, a largely eclipsed profile of Colombo emerges.Questo studio è dedicato a Carlo Colombo, professore e preside della Facoltà teologica di Venegono e di Milano, a 30 anni dalla sua morte (11 febbraio 1991). Rileggendo gli anni del suo ministero presbiterale, si è cercato di in-dividuare quegli elementi che permettono di cogliere il significato e l’impor-tanza della sua nomina a Vescovo, avvenuta in pieno concilio Vaticano II. Un inedito «scambio epistolare» con Carlo Figini e altri documenti offrono, nella seconda parte del saggio, uno sguardo diretto del teologo sull’evento. RootsGLOH2: embedding RootSIFT 'square rooting' in sGLOH2
Full text linkThis study introduces an extension of the shifting gradient local orientation histogram doubled (sGLOH2) local image descriptor inspired by RootSIFT ‘square rooting’ as a way to indirectly alter the matching distance used to compare the descriptor vectors. The extended descriptor, named RootsGLOH2, achieved the best results in terms of matching accuracy and robustness among the latest state-of-the-art non-deep descriptors in recent evaluation contests dealing with both planar and non-planar scenes. RootsGLOH2 also achieves a matching accuracy very close to that obtained by the best deep descriptors to date. Beside confirming that ‘square rooting’ has beneficial effects on sGLOH2 as it happens on scale invariant feature transform, experimental evidence shows that classical norm-based distances, such as the Euclidean and Manhattan distances, only provide suboptimal solutions to the problem of local image descriptor matching. This suggests matching distance design as a topic to investigate further in the near future
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
