This research appllied representing other Carl Thomson approach in a novel entitled Traveler's Tale: Belok Kanan Barcelona. Representing other in the mentioned novel was conducted to expound on how the writer portrays west and east culture as the travel writing. The writer applied Carl Thompson's Theory to indentifying Travelers Tale novel; Belok Kanan Barcelona from the representing other's concept trough descriptive and qualitative approach. The research result has shown that they appraise the west culture than the east culture - tend to belittle the east culture. The revealing of the two differnt culture features is represented in a form of idiology in travel writing. Ergo, from this research, we can conclude that the writing technique tends to exergerating the west (self), the comparison result tends to belittle the east culture (others). Penggambaran Prancis dalam Novel Arab Faraj: Kajian Sastra Perjalanan Carl Thompson
No full textTravel writing or travelogue is currently a popular field of study. However, it has yet to receive a lot of attention in the Arabic literature tradition. This article aims to break down the travel story found in the Arabic Novel Faraj. The research applies a descriptive-analytical approach to analyze and present an in-depth analysis. Data collection begins with meticulous reading and translation to ensure an adequate understanding. Words, phrases, or sentences that contain travel narratives are recorded as data. These data are then analyzed using literature relevant to travel writing, as proposed by Carl Thompson, to examine patterns of depicting travel in terms of reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other. The results of the investigation indicate that, through the novel Faraj, the author sees France, which is considered as a superior, free, and advanced Western country, experiencing significant demonstrations to challenge authority, mirroring Egyptian events. The author uses the fictional character Nida Abdul Qadir to show how the 1968 demonstrations in France influenced her life as a student activist

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textPenelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis tiga aspek utama dalam sastra
perjalanan Carl Thompson yakni penggambaran dunia yang objektif, adanya diri atau
self serta other atau penggambaran yang lain yang dikisahkan dalam roman Le Premier
Jour karya Marc Levy. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dan teknik
pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik studi pustaka. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan
bahwa roman Le Premier Jour mengandung tiga unsur utama sastra perjalanan Carl
Thompson. Unsur reporting the world menunjukkan bahwa pola penggambaran dunia
dominan mengarah pada sisi objektif, yakni tempat – tempat yang dikunjungi Adrian
dan Keira adalah nyata seperti saat mengunjungi tempat – tempat di wilayah Afrika.
Tak hanya itu, self atau jati diri mereka yakni seorang bangsa barat muncul karena\ud
adanya sebab dan akibat yang dialami oleh mereka selama perjalanan. Self yang ada
pada diri bangsa barat yang dikenal dengan superioritas nya, ketika memasuki wilayah
timur mereka mampu beradaptasi dengan baik. Selanjutnya, other atau penggambaran
yang lain dalam roman ini berkaitan dengan kebudayaan baru yang mereka temui dan
pelajari saat di Afrika serta menghargai setiap kegiatan yang ada di wilayah tersebut
seperti saat mereka berada di wilayah salah satu suku di Afrika. Simpulan pada
penelitian ini adalah penggambaran dunia secara objektifitas melatarbelakangi
perjalanan yaitu untuk menggambarkan keadaan dunia yang nyata, lalu diri atau self
yang merepresentasi bangsa barat dan timur dalam hal ini bangsa barat mampu
menyesuaikan dirinya saat berada di wilayah lain dan other atau penggambaran yang
lain dalam roman ini tidak hanya menggambarkan tempat, akan tetapi tempat tersebut
juga menggambarkan adanya kebudayaan yang dianggap oleh bangsa eropa salah satu
hal yang menarik untuk mereka pelajari

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
