Sulla soglia dei mondi possibili. Lavagetto e la teoria della letteratura

The aim of the paper is to underline the links between fictional worlds theory and Mario Lavagetto’s critical work. Retracing Lavagetto’s literary theory through some of his essays, the analysis focuses on some key aspects such as thresholds, lies, borders, and blanks, that allow drawing several connections with fictional worlds theory. A specific attention is given to the patterns Lavagetto, as a literary critic, explores in his books with the reader’s help, interpreted as openings towards other possible worlds.L'obiettivo del saggio è evidenziare le connessioni tra la teoria dei mondi possibili e il lavoro critico di Mario Lavagetto.

«This is what I long for». Trame e desiderio in Philip Roth e Don DeLillo

The essay aims at exploring the relation between plotting and longing in two classics of contemporary literature: Philip Roth’s American Pastoral and Don DeLillo’s Underworld, both published in 1997. After an opening contextualization, referring on some paradoxes of the narrative turn, the analysis focuses on the formal aspects of the two novels. A specific attention, then, is paid to some pivotal questions of the historical context the novels deal with

«Out there in the world»: la violenza del reale nell'America di fine millennio

This essay draws inspiration from two novels and a film realized at the end of the 20th Century, Underworld by DeLillo, American Pastoral by Roth, and Fight Club by Fincher, in order to develop a reflection upon the relationship between reality and fiction, focusing mainly on the depiction of violence. The analysis of formal and structural aspects is alternated with thematic considerations. Each of these three case studies refers to an «out there» chaotic world in contrast to the characters’ ordinary lives, which are perceived as inauthentic.

Scrap, as a residual and not easy to place element, is a common topic in a great number of works in contemporary fiction, where it takes on a precise meaning: waste. This paper aims to analyse this theme focusing on some emblematic passages of two maximalist novels published at the end of 20th Century: Underworld, by Don DeLillo, and Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. In the former, Nick Shay’s job consists of the disposal of waste, which becomes something that questions the concept of functionality (Scaffai 139). Moreover, waste becomes the tangible equivalent of adolescent traumas, surfacing all over again. In Infinite Jest, the stories told by the drug addicts who live in Ennet House, the real “scraps” of the novel, represent an effort made by characters to re-elaborate narratively their suffering, giving voice to their own experience. Waste symbolizes the return of the rejected, what was relegated to the margins of the community or characters\u27 lives; it becomes a means to advocate for space in the complex plots of the novels

Storie sepolte.

The paper explores the topic of the desert and its different manifestations in Don DeLillo’s work, through a sample of texts published between the Seventies and the first decade of the 21st century. After an introduction aiming at contextualizing the desert in the light of a wider debate about spatial depiction, in the following paragraphs the author insists on the pitfalls and mirages of the place, which often becomes the scenery of a ruinous quest for authenticity. A specific attention is paid to the texts, while some important anthropological insights play a key role, allowing a wider consideration on DeLillo’s work. The ability of this writer in interpreting the dynamics of a globalized world will be especially underlined, as well as his capacity for outlining, thanks to the «buried stories» he explores, a feasible alternative to nihilism

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
