Inviscid and viscous flow computations by means of a lambda methodology: A review
The present paper provides a review of the more important results obtained by the author, sometimes with co-authors, solving inviscid and viscous compressible flows by means of a lambda methodology. In particular, an implicit numerical algorithm, called fast solver, has always been applied. This methodology separately integrates the compatibility conditions, written in terms of generalized Riemann variables, along appropriate bicharacteristic lines. The multi-dimensional flow problem is, thus, reduced to a sequence of simple quasi one-dimensional problems. The merits of this approach are demonstrated by means of the application of the method to the solution of three dimensional (3-D) subsonic and transonic inviscid flows, of two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-D viscous flows and of the 2-D flow around a vertical axis wind turbine. In the transonic case the shock wave is computed by means of a shock fitting technique, which enforces the proper shock jumps by an explicit use of the Rankine-Hugoniot equations; in the wind turbine case the blades are represented in a time-averaged sense by means of an actuator porous cylinder, having the turbine radius. The results are then compared with other numerical results and with experimental results
Beyond Ecological Trauma. Aldous Huxley’s Theory of Language
Aldous Huxley gained fame as the most cultivated and complex writer of his time. After the publication of Brave New World in 1932 his work became increasingly difficult to categorize as it began to crossthe boundaries that separate art from science, religion and mys-ticism. Throughout his literarylifehe askedus to shift «our collective attention from the merely political to the basic biological aspects of the human situation». He urges us to shift from a nationalistic, warmongering way of thinking to an ecological approach:«Do we propose to live in this planet in symbiotic harmony with our environment? Or, preferring to be wantonly stupid, shall we choose to live like murderous and suicidal parasites that kill their host and so destroythemselves?» (The Politics of Ecology). He saw the ecological issues he dealt with as by-products of our world view, anticipating what environmentalists later defined as the ‘belief paradigm’ of our culture (Sawyer 2008). This paper studies the link Aldous Huxley draws between this ‘belief paradigm’and language and how, through a brand-new theory of language, he identifiesa path-way out of the ecological trauma that Man has caused. It focuses, in particular, on the four essays he devoted entirely to this theme: Words and Behavior, 1936; Words and Their Meaning, 1940, On Language, 1959, and The Politics of Ecology. The Question of Survival (1963). The last section of this paper analysesthe novel Island (1962). It is in this‘utopian’ novel, in fact, that he explores in greater depth the themes touched upon in his previous essay-writing. Here the author combineslanguage theory, human narrative talent and ecological concern to build a unique picture which is, arguably, his most important legacy to future generations
The author analyzes the assumptions on which the judgment is justified by reference into another judgment of the same judicial body and issued in another measure. The study is characterized by the detailed analysis of case law, as well as for the systematic reconstruction of the case in the wider context of the need for adequate reasons for the judgment
How to Escape a 'Subhuman Lot': Aldous Huxley's "The Politics of Ecology - The Question of Survival"
Aldous Huxley’s fluid vocation has made his essays a reference point in modern literature (Lukàcs, 1910; Adorno, 1969). Short without being poems and always characterized by well-structured plot without being novels (Woolf, 1925), Huxley’s essays writing has in fact become the ‘frontier’ of the XX and XXI century novel (in line with contemporary critical view of the genre, Pavel, 2003; Ercolino, 2014).
This chapter focuses on a relatively less known interest of the author. It discusses Aldous Huxley’s view on the relationship, and on the inherent tension, between technological development and exponential increase in human population, and the environmental transformation of the planet. Long before his contemporaries, the author believed that industrial civilization was transforming our planet and human nature as well (Dees, 2015). Huxley’s commitment to imagine an ecologically sustainable form of civilization was, in my opinion, his most grounbreaking trait (Latouche, 2010). The chapter also examines the relevance of this view on some important intellectual and political developments that find their roots in the late 1950s; the transformation of ecology from a mostly descriptive discipline to a modern science concerned with general principles and attracting significant public attention and the emergence of a truly global environmental movement.
In particular, in order to identify the backbone of Huxley’s environmental thought, this chapter takes under exam sixteen lectures given at the University of California Santa Barbara in 1959, and published only in 1978 in the volume The Human Situation 1978, and the unpublished essay The Politics of Ecology. The Question of Survival, released in 1963 as “an occasional paper published by the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions” in which Huxley develops this theme and utters his last word before dying

Certi pomeriggi non passano mai:Some Afternoons Never Seem to End
Certi pomeriggi non passano mai by Mario Fortunato is a short and engaging theatre monologue that analyzes the tension created by waiting for a beloved who is late for an appointment. The wait stretches for hours and creates controversial emotions and anxiety ironically described by the author, with hilarious moments that go from drama to comedy to the surreal, in a sort of ‘one man’ Waiting for Godot. The text was freely adapted and performed in Italian, with some parts in German and English. Theatralia is an international collective of performers and artists who explore texts through physical theatre, live art & music, inventive digital art, and audience participation that was founded by Filomena Campus in 2003. Since 2006 Theatralia’s productions have been sponsored by the Arts Council England. Their much acclaimed production Misterioso. A Journey into the Silence of Thelonious Monk, written by Stefano Benni, was presented at London Riverside Studios and at the Edinburgh Festival.
Filomena Campus is a theatre director and a Jazz musician. Productions include Not in My Name inspired by The Living Theatre and U238 by Marco Paolini.
