Online resources for mathematics in the scientific virtual reference desk
The present work briefly describes the Virtual Reference Desk for mathematics elaborated during the time I worked at the CERN Library (European Laboratory for Particle Physics or Laboratoire européen pour la physique des particules) in Geneva. This instrument is dedicated to the CERN librarians, with whom I have shared important moments of my professional career. In particular, I would like to gratefully acknowledge their valuable co-operation and assistance during our time spent working together. The Web metasource is comprised of three directories, annotated and interrelated with dual application: The first is intended as a work tool for librarians working in mathematics libraries, but above all for librarians of high energy physics, who more often than not must turn to mathematics and the use of mathematical applications and models for the physical sciences and in particular particle physics. The second is an on-line resource for mathematics; that is, a Virtual Reference Desk for the community of mathematicians, with whom I have been collaborating for some twenty years at the University of Padova. The bibliographical instrument is born from the need to have at our disposal a scientific Virtual Reference Desk created according to the needs of those working in physics and mathematics libraries – a tool which is comprised of materials collected during years of work as much as material available on-line through the use of new technologies
Ultrasound Guided Catheter Tip Location in Neonates: A Prospective Cohort Study
Objective: To assess point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) guided catheter tip location in a neonatal cohort after insertion of percutaneously inserted central catheters (PICCs) from the upper part of the body. Study design: This was a prospective, observational study on PICC tip location. Tip site was assessed by radiological landmarks or direct ultrasound (US) visualization of the cardiovascular structures. Results: One hundred eighteen PICCs (28Gauge/1French) were studied in 102 neonates (mean postmenstrual age 31 weeks, range 25-43 weeks; mean weight at positioning 1365 g, range 420-4180 g). Feasibility of POCUS guided tip location was 92.3% in our population. Failures were significantly associated with mechanical ventilation (aOR 5.33; 95% CI 1.13-29.5; P = .038). Agreement between US and radiographic methods was found in 88 of 109 cases (80.7%). Fifteen of 21 discordant cases led to a change in clinical management. Conclusions: POCUS guided localization of small bore PICC is a non-invasive and effective alternative to the conventional radiogram. The latter should be recommended when US examination fails to locate the catheter tip
Infant and child oral health risk status correlated to behavioral habits of parents or caregivers: a survey in central Italy
Aim: The aim of this survey was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of parents and caregivers about potential oral health risk factors for their children in their first months of life (3–30 months). Materials and Methods: The participation to the survey was proposed to all parents or caregivers of children attending the public consulting service in Latina for mandatory vaccinations during the period of June to August 2014. A self-administered questionnaire was completed to obtain information regarding demographic variables, infant feeding practice, maternal oral health during and after pregnancy, children’s oral hygiene habits and risk behaviors (e.g., sharing cutlery, tasting of baby food, nightly using of baby bottles with sugared beverages, or sugared pacifier), and knowledge about caries and its transmission. The analysis of the data was performed using SPSS 14.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The variance analysis and chi-square test were used to investigate the relationship between the variables. Results: Overall, the parents of 304 children consented to fill the questionnaire. Data analysis showed that about 50% of respondents considered dental caries an infectious disease, however, 53.6% was not aware of the potential vertical transmissibility of cariogenic bacteria through contaminated saliva. It is a common trend in the early stages of weaning to taste the baby food (53%) and sharing cutlery (38.5%). With regard to children oral health care, parents reported no toothbrushing for 53.1% of the children in their first 3 years of life. The relationship between the two variables concerning caries transmissibility and tools sharing carried out on through Pearson chi-square test identified P = 0.32. Conclusions: From this survey, the need for parental oral health promoting program emerged to control children oral health risk status
Crimine, sommerso e attività bancaria: quale relazione?
What is the effect of crime and underground economy on the stock of bank lending and retail base? The intent of this study is to provide an answer to this and many other questions, utilizing regional-based combined data from Banca d’Italia, Istat and Ministry of the Interior. The results of the analysis show that the level of diffusion of crime has an impact both on the volume of employed resources and the volume of bank retail base. However, the element that significantly reduces bank lending is the perception families have of crime risk, while the level of violent crimes and property crimes (the so-called economic-related crimes) appears to be irrelevant. With regard to the relationship between underground crime and bank business, the results would seem to suggest that the connection is quite weak. Nevertheless, when the data is broken down according to the macro-sector of activity, there is a positive connection between the level of underground crime in the industrial sector and the volume of bank lending and bank accounts. The exact opposite happens for the underground crime in the building sector, but only in relation to the volume of lending. Lastly, the level of underground crime in the industrial sector seems to boost the capability of the bank system to increase the proportion between the resources collected and employed on a specific territory
Klinefelter syndrome: case report
The aim of this work is to describe the problems of child dentistry affected by Klinefelter's syndrome.
Through the presentation of a clinical case that was followed by a Pediatric Dentistry, University Sapienza of Rome.
Interceptive therapy aims to eliminate the functional interference that occurs during growth.
Conclusion. For this reason it’s a must for the dentist to carefully monitor the oral health of the small patient immediately
