Beyond Bottles: Exploring Consumer Perceptions and Preferences for Bag-in-Box Wine Packaging

    No full text
The change in consumption habits, the need for product differentiation and the transition to eco-sustainable wine production have led to the adoption of alternative packaging solutions, moving beyond the traditional glass bottle. This study employs experimental auctions with a sample of 100 participants to assess consumer willingness to pay for both bag-in-box and traditional glass bottle packaging. Using statistical tests and regression analysis, we find that consumer preferences for wine packaging formats significantly influence purchasing decisions and perceptions of product quality. Notably, consumers show a lower willingness to pay for the same wine when packaged in a bag-in-box than a bottle, and taste does not influence the willingness to pay. Moreover, the preference for bottled wine seems to be socially influenced. This study enriches the understanding of consumer behaviour regarding packaging preferences and provides actionable insights for the wine industry, retailers, policymakers and consumers

The effect of the addition of gelatinized flour on dough rheology and quality of bread made from brown wheat flour

Although brown wheat flours are healthier than refined ones, baking quality is poor. To improve the workability and quality of brown wheat flour, we tested the addition of gelatinized flour during the production of salt-free bread. Dough rheology and bread quality were investigated in two trials. The first tested the addition of three levels of water and two levels of gelatinized brown flour. Brown flour gel addition significantly affected dough rheology and bread quality. Doughs made with gel required more water. Furthermore, significant interactions between gelatinized brown flour and water content were found for bread volume and crumb hardness. The second trial tested effects of gelatinized brown flour addition in doughs prepared with optimal water content (gelatinized flour samples required more water to reach optimum levels). Dough rheology was improved with the use of gelatinized brown flour; bread samples had significantly higher volume and lower hardness and chewiness. The addition of gelatinized brown flour may represent a good strategy to improve the baking performance of brown wheat flours, notably dough rheology and bread quality. The technique does not require the addition of new ingredients and preserves the high nutritional value of brown flour

Le gallerie TAV attraverso l’Appennino Toscano: impatto idrogeologico ed opere di mitigazione

    No full text

Hydroalcoholic extract of Spartium junceum L. flowers inhibits growth and melanogenesis in B16-F10 cells by inducing senescence

Background: Ultraviolet light exposure generates, in human tissues, radical species, which represent the main cause of photo-aging, DNA damage and skin cancer onset. On the other hand, Mediterranean plants, being continuously subjected to high solar radiation levels, are naturally adapted to take on this type of abiotic stress, thanks to the production of antioxidant secondary metabolites. For these reasons, several plant extracts were documented to be excellent antineoplastic drugs. Purpose: We investigated the potential antitumor activity of the flower extract obtained by Spartium junceum L., a Mediterranean shrub, correlating it with the plant metabolic profile. Study design: After selecting the best extraction method to obtain as more secondary metabolites as possible from S. junceum flowers, we characterized the extract metabolic content. Then, by in vitro analyses, the antioxidant profile and the antineoplastic activity on B16-F10 murine melanoma cell of our extract were investigated. Methods: Spectrophotometric assays, HPLC-DAD and GC-MS analyses provided us information about flower extract composition and antioxidant activity. MTT assay and Trypan Blue exclusion test were performed to assess the extract toxicity and the viability, after treatments, of B16-F10 cancer cells and of C2C12 murine myoblasts. In vitro experiments (i.e. cytofluorimetry, protein analysis and qPCR) allowed us to analyze the effect of the plant extract on B16-F10 cell redox state, melanogenesis and cell cycle. Senescence induction was investigated by using a specific kit. Results: We observed that the hydroalcoholic extract of S. junceum flowers (HFE) strongly inhibited B16-F10 murine melanoma cell proliferation, while just a feeble effect was observed on C2C12 murine myoblasts. Moreover, we found that HFE exerted a pro-oxidant activity on melanoma cells, inhibited melanogenesis and caused cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase, inducing senescence. These anti-cancer properties of HFE could be related to the rich metabolic profile of the extract that we characterized by HPLC-DAD and GC-MS analyses. Conclusion: This evidence suggests that S. junceum phytocomplex can be used as a selective, nontoxic, economic and easily available anticancer drug

Groundwater flow systems in turbidites of the Northern Apennines (Italy): natural discharge and high speed railway tunnel drainage

    No full text
A conceptual model of groundwater flow systems in turbiditic fractured aquifers is proposed, taking into account natural discharge pattern of the hydrogeologic system and the system perturbation induced by tunnel drainage. Silico-clastic and marly calcareous turbidites outcrop extensively in Northern Apeninnes (Italy) and paper deals with the assessment of the aquifer-like behaviour of these units, up to now considered as aquitards, as reflected by the huge amounts of groundwater locally drained by tunnels for the high speed railway (HSR) connection between Bologna and Florence. The study is based on the analysis of a huge amount of hydrological data (springs, streams and tunnels discharge) collected by a monitoring activity performed for a 10 years time-span, integrated by hydrochemical and isotopic analysis on surface and tunnel waters and a stream-tunnel tracer test. In a turbiditic aquifer recession analysis permits to discriminate groundwater flow systems, to calculate recharge relative to the up-stream reach portion and to locate springs more vulnerable to tunnel drainage impacts. Natural discharge is stream-focused and, as the tunnel drainage is for 85% formed by active recharge groundwater, the impact on the stream base-flow is severe with abatement of natural discharge budget component up to 2/3 of natural value

Guido Crepax – Valentina – The Shape of Her Time

    No full text
The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
