Defying the law, negotiating change The Futanke’s opposition to the national ban on FGM in Senegal

    No full text
This thesis is concerned with the politics of the preservation and ‘abandonment’ of female circumcision in Fouta Toro, Senegal. The focal point of analysis is the overt opposition to the law criminalising female genital cutting in 1999, and development projects raising awareness about excision in human rights and reproductive health education programmes. As an ethnography of the politics around bodily practices in the light of governmental and non-governmental intervention, the thesis looks at how different interest groups justify their position towards excision. This is a timely enquiry, given the Senegalese government’s ‘acceleration programme of the complete abandonment of excision by 2015’ and some Futanke leaders’ non-compliance with, and opposition to this intervention. After providing details about ‘the ban’ on ‘female genital mutilation’ in Senegal and a critical reflection on the events that are seen to have led to the call for this ban, I carefully disentangle what ‘the opposition to the law’ is and who disagrees with ‘the abandonment’ of the practice in Fouta Toro. The central part of the thesis is guided by an analysis of how excision is embedded in constructions of personhood, sociality and ethnic identity, and how the body is imagined and located in this process. I show how conceptions of ethnic purity and pride are formulated in terms of fear about a ‘loss of culture’ and ‘foreign invasion’ which nourishes discourses of opposition to the law and non-governmental intervention. Others use ‘human rights’ associated with non-governmental organisations and the state as a vehicle to express their views against excision and those who oppose its criminalisation. I examine how idioms like ‘the state’, ‘human rights’ and ‘Futanke way of life’ feature in discourses around the ban of excision in Fouta Toro, and how respectability and honour are maintained through competing representations of the female body as a site of morality. Some claim the female body – a reproducer of cultural identities – with reference to duties through kin obligations, others with reference to ‘human rights’ and ‘the state’. Based on 15 months’ ethnographic fieldwork in Fouta Toro and nine years working in and researching the impact of development in Senegal, this dissertation contributes to scholarship on Fouta Toro and indicates how governmental and non-governmental intervention stirs up the caste-related power structures of a society led by the Tooroɓɓe since the Islamic revolution in the 18th century. It shows how the female body is located as a site of morality, key to the reproduction of cultural identities

The behaviour between men and women is a problem that affects the society, which has resulted in a controversial issue, a theme dealt with by mass media and many contemporary writers. An author such as Suso de Toro (Santiago de Compostela, 1956) who, with his camera view, has occupied his time in observing the modern world’s diseases, he couldn’t stay out; for this reason, the aim of this study is, on the basis of the personal considerations of the author born in Santiago and making a brief analysis of his publications, to present the dynamic which is developed between men and women in his narrative work and the different views which men and women have of each other.O comportamento entre homes e mulleres é unha problemática que afecta tanto á sociedade, que derivou nun tema moi controvertido, tratado non só polos medios de comunicación de masas, senón por moitos escritores e escritoras contemporáneos. Towards an understanding of the correlations in jet substructure

    No full text
Over the past decade, a large number of jet substructure observables have been proposed in the literature, and explored at the LHC experiments. Such observables attempt to utilize the internal structure of jets in order to distinguish those initiated by quarks, gluons, or by boosted heavy objects, such as top quarks and W bosons. This report, originating from and motivated by the BOOST2013 workshop, presents original particle-level studies that aim to improve our understanding of the relationships between jet substructure observables, their complementarity, and their dependence on the underlying jet properties, particularly the jet radius and jet transverse momentum. This is explored in the context of quark/gluon discrimination, boosted W boson tagging and boosted top quark tagging

Foodways in transition: food plants, diet and local perceptions of change in a Costa Rican Ngäbe community

Background Indigenous populations are undergoing rapid ethnobiological, nutritional and socioeconomic transitions while being increasingly integrated into modernizing societies. To better understand the dynamics of these transitions, this article aims to characterize the cultural domain of food plants and analyze its relation with current day diets, and the local perceptions of changes given amongst the Ngäbe people of Southern Conte-Burica, Costa Rica, as production of food plants by its residents is hypothesized to be drastically in recession with an decreased local production in the area and new conservation and development paradigms being implemented. Methods Extensive freelisting, interviews and workshops were used to collect the data from 72 participants on their knowledge of food plants, their current dietary practices and their perceptions of change in local foodways, while cultural domain analysis, descriptive statistical analyses and development of fundamental explanatory themes were employed to analyze the data. Results Results show a food plants domain composed of 140 species, of which 85 % grow in the area, with a medium level of cultural consensus, and some age-based variation. Although many plants still grow in the area, in many key species a decrease on local production–even abandonment–was found, with much reduced cultivation areas. Yet, the domain appears to be largely theoretical, with little evidence of use; and the diet today is predominantly dependent on foods bought from the store (more than 50 % of basic ingredients), many of which were not salient or not even recognized as ‘food plants’ in freelists exercises. While changes in the importance of food plants were largely deemed a result of changes in cultural preferences for store bought processed food stuffs and changing values associated with farming and being food self-sufficient, Ngäbe were also aware of how changing household livelihood activities, and the subsequent loss of knowledge and use of food plants, were in fact being driven by changes in social and political policies, despite increases in forest cover and biodiversity. Conclusions Ngäbe foodways are changing in different and somewhat disconnected ways: knowledge of food plants is varied, reflecting most relevant changes in dietary practices such as lower cultivation areas and greater dependence on food from stores by all families. We attribute dietary shifts to socioeconomic and political changes in recent decades, in particular to a reduction of local production of food, new economic structures and agents related to the State and globalization

This thesis, presented to the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Santa Catarina state, Line Research Education and Training of Teachers, in 05/11/10, aims to investigate and reflect how they are made in the affective relationship between educators and students in a school of Basic Education from the State of the City of Morro da Fumaca in Santa Catarina. Affection is understood here as a state of deep affinity between people and the environment, can cause feelings of love, devotion, friendship, altruism, for example, or those who promote the disqualification of individuals and limit their humanization process. Characterized as a complex phenomenon that can not be reduced to simplistic explanations. As a case study, the approach of this dissertation is guided from an ethnographic perspective, qualitative analysis, where the complexity of the look takes on a dialogue with the empirical field to construct explanations about the phenomenon rough affection. In this way it is a look situated in an ethic of relations, whose aesthetic is intertwined with the plot and the author of the biographical context-bio-social anthropology (MORIN, 2002, p. 19), to consider the school as a place where life pulsates in consistent with the processes of the curriculum. Therefore recognizes that the school may also be a social space that emphasizes and leverages a pedagogy of affection. This pedagogy that has as its principle to build and strengthen the bond between the subjects in coexistence, create situations that provide the development of creativity of educators and students through qualified personal relationships. In this scenario, value the experience of childhood as a journey. Immersed in a public school, the look of this dissertation is born of dialog between the researcher, three teachers of elementary school and his group of children aged seven to twelve years, students of the second and fourth grades. With them, besides the emotional bonds, brings weekly meetings, talk in groups, held during the year 2009 and first semester of 2010. In each case the intention was seeking to motivate them to participate actively in research, with activities that bring the expression of their feelings, sharing their knowledge and ensure the hearing of their business in the dance between teaching and learning. The survey showed, among other things, that school also reproduces the ideologies of a patriarchal culture, hierarchical relationships, causes distances between the subjects, which makes complicate the affective qualified. Paradoxically, the subjects create opportunities for a being-together-with, often crossed by processes disorders (MORIN, 2010, p.199) that will set different attempts at transgression in daily life and routines established that abound in the classroom

Introduction. Penetrating abdominal trauma caused by bull horn ramming represents less than 3%. These are wounds that should be considered dirty, and the leading cause of death from this type of trauma is hypovolemic shock. Case Presentation. A 60-year-old man with penetrating abdominal trauma by bull horn in the left flank and hypogastrium, 18x8 cm in extension, with acute traumatic evisceration. He was taken to exploratory laparotomy, where no solid organ or hollow viscera lesions were evidenced. The patient evolved without complications. Discussion. Given their characteristics, bull horn wounds are considered dirty and have an infection rate of up to 50%. Initial management should include antibiotics and surgical approaches, according to each case. Conclusion. Penetrating abdominal trauma caused by bull horn ramming is an infrequent mechanism; however, surgeons must be trained to treat or not to treat this type of patient surgically.

Spontaneous ATM gene reversion in A-T iPSC to produce an isogenic cell line

    No full text
A spontaneously reverted iPSC line was identified from an A-T subject with heterozygous ATM truncation mutations. The reverted iPSC line expressed ATM protein and was capable of radiation-induced phosphorylation of CHK2 and H2A.X. Genome-wide SNP analysis confirmed a match to source T-cells and also to a distinct, non-reverted iPSC line from the same subject. Rearranged T-cell receptor sequences predict that the iPSC culture originated as several independently reprogrammed cells that resolved into a single major clone, suggesting that gene correction likely occurred early in the reprogramming process. Gene expression analysis comparing ATM-/- iPSC lines to unrelated ATM+/- cells identifies a large number of differences but comparing only the isogenic pair of A-T iPSC lines reveals that the primary pathway affected by loss of ATM is a diminished expression of p53-related mRNAs. Gene reversion in culture, while likely a rare event, provided a novel, reverted cell line for studying ATM function.Peer reviewe

    No full text
