STOP&GO. Il riuso delle aree industriali dismesse in Italia. Trenta casi studio
The text is the outcome of the interdisciplinary research activity “For a catalogue of vacant industrial sites: strategies, typologies, geographies between re-use and sustainability” carried out with the contribution of the Ministry of Education, of the University and Research (Miur), as part of the Young Researchers Project, and Compagnia Generale Ripreseaeree Spa Parma (Guido Callegari, scientific project leader).
This book provides an overview of the situation of vacant industrial sites and of problems and opportunities tied to this phenomenon, proposing a critical analysis starting from the Eighties when this process first became perceptible and continuing with a description of a broad selection of project case studies and also suggesting a rich bibliography.
This work aims to delineate and provide a general overview of the state of the art of this issue by drafting a reference critical outline applied to the Italian situation in order to analyse issues, approaches and stakeholders of recent transformation processes.
The volume comprises three parts:
- the first focusses on various aspects of this phenomenon through four contributions: the "geography" of the transformation, its rapport with traditional architecture and urban culture, the role of complex urban programmes and also the debate on issues such as environmental sustainability
- the second presents a selection of 30 projects already implemented or in course, described in form of monographic reports in order to compare various information and data regarding the history of the sites, procedures, town planning instruments, morphology, type and quantity involved in the related transformation processes
- the third part comprises various contributions furnished by stakeholders in the debate on requalification of these areas, forming, each with its own peculiarities, an emblematic sample group: Carlo Alberto Barbieri, Silvano Bassetti, Andreas Kipar, Massimo Pica Ciamarra, Carlo Puri Negri, Dionisio Vianello, thus completing the general outline revealed by analysis of the case studies

Application of the Rotation Matrix Natural Invariants to Impedance Control of Rotational Parallel Robots
Force control of parallel robots with rotational degrees of freedom through impedance algorithms is considerably influenced by the representation method of the end-effector orientation. Using the natural invariants of the rotation matrix and the angular velocity vector in the impedance control law has some theoretical advantages, which derive from the Euclidean-geometric meaning of these entities. These benefits are particularly evident in case of robotic architectures with three rotational degrees of freedom (serial or parallel wrists with spherical motion). The behaviour of a 3-CPU parallel robot controlled by an impedance algorithm based on this concepts is assessed through multibody simulations, and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach
Experiments on aircraft flight parameter detection by on-skin sensors
Air speed and flight attitude angles are fundamental parameters for manual of automatic control of flying bodies. Conventional measuremen methods rely on probes (e.g. Pitot tubes or vanes) having a one-to-one correspondence with the physical quantities of interest and requiring specific placements. Here, a novel measurement approach is proposed, relying on indirect measurement and on a plurality of pressure readings made by thin capacitive sensors directly placed on the aircraft skin. A redundant number of probes relaxes the accuracy requirements posed on the individual units and helps achieving fault detection or fault tolerance. A strategy for efficiently processing/combining sensor data is herein presented together with an error propagation analysis, and experimental data

S-layer gene as a molecular marker for identification of Lactobacillus helveticus
The paper describes two methods that allow rapid and accurate identification of Lactobacillus helveticus strains based on the nucleotide sequence of the gene coding for the surface layer (S-layer) protein. The first method is based on a polymerase chain reaction amplification using primers targeting a specific fragment of the S-layer gene. The second method involved a portion of the S-layer gene of L. helveticus as a probe in a hybridisation test. The specificity of these protocols was checked for DNA samples isolated from various Lactobacillus strain
Lactobacillus plantarum and lactobacillus reuteri as functional feed additives to prevent diarrhoea in weaned piglets
The effects of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus reuteri and their combination were assessed in weaned piglets. Three hundred and fifty weaned piglets (Landrace × Large White), balanced in terms of weight and sex, were randomly allotted to four experimental groups (25 pens, 14 piglets/pen). Piglets were fed a basal control diet (CTRL, six pens) and a treatment diet supplemented with 2 × 108 CFU/g of L. plantarum (PLA, 6 pens), 2 × 108 CFU/g L. reuteri (REU, six pens) and the combination of both bacterial strains (1 × 108 CFU/g of L. plantarum combined with 1 × 108 CFU/g of L. reuteri, P+R, 7 pens) for 28 days. Body weight and feed intake were recorded weekly. Diarrhoea occurrence was assessed weekly by the faecal score (0–3; considering diarrhoea ≥ 2). At 0 and 28 days, faecal samples were obtained from four piglets per pen for microbiological analyses and serum samples were collected from two piglets per pen for serum metabolic profiling. Treatments significantly reduced diarrhoea occurrence and decreased the average faecal score (0.94 ± 0.08 CTRL, 0.31 ± 0.08 PLA, 0.45 ± 0.08 REU, 0.27 ± 0.08 P+R; p < 0.05). The PLA group registered the lowest number of diarrhoea cases compared to other groups (20 cases CTRL, 5 cases PLA, 8 cases REU, 10 cases P+R; p < 0.01). After 28 days, the globulin serum level increased in PLA compared to the other groups (24.91 ± 1.09 g/L CTRL, 28.89 ± 1.03 g/L PLA, 25.91 ± 1.03 g/L REU, 25.31 ± 1.03 g/L P+R; p < 0.05). L. plantarum and L. reuteri could thus be considered as interesting functional additives to prevent diarrhoea occurrence in weaned piglets
