No full textIm 19. Jahrhundert wanderten viele Schweizer aus. Einer davon war Florian Cajori. Sein Auswanderungsziel war Amerika, wo bereits der ältere Bruder ein neues Zuhau-se gefunden hat.
Florian Cajori besuchte in den USA weiterführende Schulen und studierte dort Ma-thematik. Durch sein Engagement wurde er ein beliebter und erfolgreicher Mathema-tik- und Physikprofessor. Neben dem Unterrichten galt sein Interesse der Geschichte der Mathematik. Er publizierte einige Bücher und Zeitungsartikel darüber. Diese Tä-tigkeit brachte ihm Anerkennung und einen Lehrstuhl als Professor für Mathematikge-schichte an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkeley. In dieser Zeit kamen viele wei-tere Bücher und Artikel dazu.
Im Kapitel „Bibliografie“ findet man Zusammenfassungen zu drei seiner Bücher. Da-runter das bekannteste Buch „A History of Mathematical Notations“, welches als sein Lebenswerk gilt. Noch heute werden seine Arbeiten gelesen und in modernen Publika-tionen zitiert. Die Informationen dazu wurden durch die Zitationsanalyse aufgearbeitet.
Florian Cajori ist immer noch ein Begriff, vor allem im Kreis der Mathematikhistoriker. Dies erfährt man im Austausch mit einigen Experten und aus den zwei schriftlichen Interviews, die für diese Masterarbeit durchgeführt wurden.
Die Arbeit ist in drei Kapiteln eingeteilt:

Für die Bearbeitung der Kapitel wurden Literatur- und Archivrecherche, Interview und Zitationsanalyse als Methoden eingesetzt.

Experimental Philosophy and Philosophical Disputes
Full text linkOne view of philosophy that is sometimes expressed, especially by scientists, is that while philosophers are good at asking questions, they are poor at producing convincing answers. And the perceived divide between philosophical and scientific methods is often pointed to as the major culprit behind this lack of progress. Looking back at the history of philosophy, however, we find that this methodological divide is a relatively recent invention. Further, it is one that has been challenged over the past decade by the modern incarnation of experimental philosophy. How might the reincorporation of empirical methods into philosophy aid the process of making philosophical progress? Building off of the work of Sytsma (2010), we argue that one way it does so is by offering a means of resolving some disputes that arise in philosophy. Jeunesse: Lecture suivie
No full textI am delighted to have found this little paperback in a favorite bookshop in Paris. I look forward to using it myself. It brings two of his best illustrators to a pupil's book of Florian's fables. The colored illustrations are not the only help for those of us trying to understand a sometimes difficult author. There are vocabulary notes, comments, and -- especially -- a short discussion of each fable's moral. These discussions are pleasantly candid, as in this comment on "La taupe et les lapins": "La fable de Florian est peut-être moins claire qu'elle n'y paraȋt" (55). No full textHere is a small edition, 3¼" x 5¼," of 162 pages. It seems to be identical to Bodemann #274, published by the same people two years earlier. As Bodemann notes in a very short description, the illustrations come as three panels per page. One panel often represents two fables. My favorites among these very small illustrations are "The Blind and the Lame" (18); "Two Bachelors" (48); "Owl and Pigeon" (83); and "Ass and Flute" (111). Do not miss the gigantic crocodile on 120!
