The Life and Times of Okot p’Bitek
Okot p’Bitek was born on 9 June 1931 to Jebedayo Opii of the Pacua clan in Patiko and Cerina Lacwaa of Palaro-Rajab. In the discussion on his biography, I follow a holistic approach using a chronological methodology which focuses on his education and life until his death on 20 July 1982. I premise my research on autoethnography which is a form of qualitative research in which the author uses self-reflection and writing to explore anecdotal and personal experience while acknowledging and valuing his/her relationships with other people. My personal knowledge of and shared culture with Okot have added value to my biographical structuring. I collected data using questionnaires and personal and group interviews with Okot’s family members, friends and colleagues in Makerere and Nairobi Universities, lecturers in Bristol and Oxford, and teachers in the various schools he attended in Uganda. I also researched his writings and writings about him in various libraries at different institutions, including the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of South Africa, Oxford University, Makerere University and the University of Nairobi, where Okot’s original manuscripts are archived. The data collected is intended to inform scholars about Okot the man. This article is divided into two parts: Okot’s biography and the importance of this biographical study
KOMPLEKSITAS POSKOLONIAL DALAM PUISI “NYANYIAN LAWINO” KARYA OKOT P’BITEK
This article discusses how an African woman faces the
postcolonial complexity as presented in the poem “Song of
Lawino” (1966), written by Okot p’Bitek, an Uganda writer. The
postcolonial complexity here means the difficult situation of
decolonizing process as a result of a cultural clash between local
African and Western culture, which has been internalized by
some African people. The internalization of the Western culture
creates self-hatred racism of African people, political group
dispute, woman oppression, and mimicry. Using postcolonial
perspective, which is proposed by Franz Fanon, Aime Caesar, and
Homi K. Bhaba, the writer analyzes how this poem portrays three
phenomena of postcolonial complexity. This postcolonial
complexity is investigated through the conflict and the characters
in the poem.
Artikel ini akan membahas bagaimana perempuan Afrika
menghadapi kompleksitas poskolonial yang digambarkan
dalam puisi “Nyanyian Lawino” (1966) karya Otot p’Bitek,
seorang penyair dari Uganda. Kompleksitas poskolonial
Afrika. Internalisasi budaya Barat oleh masyarakat lokal
Afrika melahirkan apa yang disebut sebagai “self-hatred
racism” (rasa benci terhadap budaya sendiri), “poitical
dispute“ (pergolakan politik), woman oppression”
(penindasan terhadap kaum perempuan)”, dan “mimicry”
(peniruan).

Improving international relations conferences through virtual interactions: Embodying a multi-agent Z specification framework
This study investigates virtual interactions in distributed collaboration, with the aim to improve international relations conferences through virtual interactions. This is done by addressing the problems and issues of operation, context and strategy that frequently affect international relations conferences, while preserving conference deliberations. The study deploys a qualitative inductive research approach, based on the deployment of a finite number of case studies, specifically comprising Virtual Embassy: Diplomacy in the Era of the Internet, Terrorism: Focus on 9/11, and Internet Governance and Standardisation. The key to the empirical research phase was, first, to set up of a distributed WAN with nodes worldwide; second, to run a series of virtual sessions on case study themes; and, third, to capture data as fragments of textual transcript, analyse using a coding schema, and formulate states-as-actors concepts and behaviours. The findings demonstrate, empirically, the existence of states-as-actors behaviour. A formal system specification language, Z, is invoked, which is used to model states-as-actors behaviour, with the aim to provide a broader generalisation, theory and framework as a core research outcome. A multi-agent Z specification framework is obtained, which models states-as-actors behaviour as comprising passive behaviour, active generic behaviour, active goal-oriented behaviour, and active autonomous behaviour, which manifest at any time during a session as a quasi-dynamic metamorphic binary system of agent deletion and agent creation, in which one behaviour mode appears as another behaviour mode disappears. The contribution of this research study is three-fold. First, the study contributes to knowledge, the Z specification framework, which models virtual interactions in distributed collaboration, in terms of states-asactors behaviour in international relations conferences. This has the potential of realising an information system in which artificial intelligence can be embedded to provide further insight into the behaviour modes of states-as-actors, possibly in a time continuum. Second, the study contributes to the practical feasibility of a distributed collaboration system as an implementable system on the electronic communication medium. This has the potential of enhancement through the incorporation of trustworthy computing (twc). Third the study contributes a 9-stage process-based strategy as a practical set of guidelines on how to run a multilateral negotiation in the international relations context. This has the potential being subjected to further testing and validating in an action-oriented research mode.Technology, Policy and Managemen
This (traumatized, kinky, queer) body holds a story
The chapter, "This (traumatized, kinky, queer) body holds a story" was written by Amber Dawn (Douglas College Faculty). Personal stories of surviving after the trauma of sexual assault. In the era of #MeToo, we’ve become better at talking about sexual assault. But sexual assault isn’t limited to a single, terrible moment of violence: it stays with survivors, following them wherever they go. Through the voices of twelve diverse writers, Whatever Gets You Through offers a powerful look at the narrative of sexual assault not covered by the headlines—the weeks, months, and years of survival and adaptation that people live through in its aftermath. With a foreword by Jessica Valenti, an extensive introduction by editors Stacey May Fowles and Jen Sookfong Lee, and contributions from acclaimed literary voices such as Alicia Elliott, Elisabeth de Mariaffi, Heather O’Neill, and Juliane Okot Bitek, the collection explores some of the many different forms that survival can take. From ice hockey to kink, boxing to tapestry-making, these striking personal essays address experiences as varied as the writers who have lived them. With candor and insight, each writer shares their own unique account of enduring: the everyday emotional pain and trauma, but also the incredible resilience and strength that can emerge in the aftermath of sexual assault. --From publisher description.Published
Okot’s Aesthetics Revisited: On Symbolic and Parabolic Expression in Song of Lawino
Song of Lawino remains a majestic imprint in East African literary map. On its publication in 1968, Lindfors (1984) asserts that “Okot was immediately recognized as a classical African poet’ (44). Initially written in Acoli language, the book received acclaims the world over as a new bearing for African literary artists. Since then, it continues to occupy its own niche in 21st century, which is affirmed in introduction to the 2014 impression of Song of Lawino: ‘Okot’s work will not cease to be relevant for a long time to come’ (10). Okot was honoured posthumously in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Song of Lawino on 18th March 2016 at Makerere University and Kenyatta University, literature department in a colloquium held in December 2016. The immense interest in the work is shown in translations into Luganda and then Sheng by J.K.S. Makokha, which has been appreciated by Wanambisi (1984), Mugambi (1992) and others as being African and unique art. This paper intends to add a voice in the appreciation of Song of Lawino Fifty years since its publication. The author contends that the book utilizes symbols and allegory in expressing its concerns. The paper contends that Song of Lawino utilizes symbols in communicating its concerns and at the same time the work can be read as a parable. The author identifies the various types of symbols and their relevance in expressing themes. In addition, the paper provides a parabolic reading of Okot’s work, Song of Lawino. These two lenses of studying, is hoped, will allow an in-depth study of the work

Napóleon legendája egyike a történelem nagy tüneményeinek.

Preliminary seroprevalence study of neurotropic virus antibodies in Nodding syndrome
Nodding syndrome (NS) is a mostly East African pediatric epileptiform encephalopathy of unknown etiology that shares some clinical features with measles-associated subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and progressive rubella panencephalitis. Two independent studies in northern Uganda identified an association between NS and prior measles infection, while an earlier study in South Sudan found an inverse association. We report preliminary serologic analyses of antibodies to measles (MV), rubella (RV), HSV-1, and CMV viruses in northern Ugandan children with NS and Household (HC) and Community (CC) Controls. Only MV-positive titers were significantly different (3-fold and > 2-fold) in NS relative to HC and HC + CC, respectively. While these results are consistent with greater prior measles infection in Ugandan persons with NS, further studies are needed to determine whether Measles virus (MV) plays any role in the etiology and pathogenesis of NS. Resolving this issue will be invaluable for the thousands of children at risk for this devastating yet often neglected condition
