From Risk to Emergencies: Changes in Cultural and Communication Systems in the Digital Society

    No full text
The organizational dimension of a today society is often modified by distinct and very specific risk, crisis and/or emergency events. Those aspects are also built culturally by promoting actions, practices and processes typical of the society in which they take place. In the contemporary temporal dimension, we observe not only the risk, but also the social and cultural impacts generated by the crises or emergencies that may result from it. And it is precisely on emergencies, or rather on the way of communicating emergencies in the digital society, that this article focus on, by considering the cases of Japan and Italy to support the reflection

Le Patologie ortopediche di sviluppo del cavallo sportivo: screening radiografico in cavalli allevati in belgio ed in cavalli allevati in Sardegna

Radiographic screening in young horses is an useful tool for early detection of developmental orthopedic disease (DOD), a worrying problem for owners, trainers and veterinaries. Radiographies of 700 horses (676 in Belgium, 24 in Sardinian) have been examined to study prevalences of most common pathologies (Studio I), correlation between foot conformation and presence of effusion at the distal interphalangeal joint (Studio II), usefulness of LM view in detection of DOD at the hock (Studio III). The horses were 3-4 years of age, free of lameness. DOD of osteochondral and degenerative type showed the highest prevalences and were found mostly in stifle and hock joints of the belgian group while front feet and fetlocks were more affected in the sardinian group. Effusion at the distal interphalangeal joint was positively correlated with foot conformation with low distal phalanx angle, low hoof angle, long toe and low heels, suggesting the need of proper corrective trimming of the hoof before the beginning of their training in order to prevent improper mechanical stress. In the radiographic examination of the hock, the LM view provides the largest number of radiographic signs for the diagnosis of lesions with the exception of osteochondrosis of tibial malleolus, compared with each one of the other views. Good agreement between readers of different experience demonstrated the usefulness of an evaluation grid to be available during selection of horses for reproducing purposes

L'esperimento è condotto mediante l'uso di un codice sviluppato in R.This paper presents an experiment conducted using machine learning techniques, in particular a support vector machine (SVM) machine in analyzing the results of a dataset from a qualitative survey on energy efficiency in the Lazio Region. The purpose of the experiment is to illustrate the potential of these techniques in the problems of classifying and predicting data in the context of social modeling. The experiment is conducted using a code developed in R

"\"\\\"Aim of this study was to find foot conformation mostly associated with. radiographic evidence of distal interphalangeal joint effusion in young horses at the beginning. of their sport career. Latero-medial radiographic parameters related to foot conformation were. measured and statistically compared between 25 horses with and 25 horses without distal. interphalangeal joint effusion. A strong positive correlation with long toe-low heels. conformation was found, indicating bigger workload at the distal interphalangeal joint, which. could be reduced by correct trimming of the hoof.\\\"\"

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
