The article is an attempt at a gender reading of the motif of undine and melusine in three texts by contemporary Austrian writers: Ingeborg Bachmann (Undine Goes), Barbara Neuwirth (Nimm diese Rosen, Schöne) and Barbara Frischmuth (Otter). In the introduction, the author describes the mythological and literary context in which this motif functions, and then places the analyses of the above mentioned works against this background. Another important issue is the question of the feminist progressiveness of the texts under examination: basing on the assumption that Bachmann’s work is characterised by (pre)feminist thinking, the author places in its context the texts by Neuwirth and Frischmuth, written several decades later

Neprobádané vody: Olga Neuwirth a ženy v surrealismu a opeře analyzují hudebně divadelní dílo Bählamms Fest v rámci kontextu žen v surrealismu a opeře. Jde o základ pochopení konceptuálního scénografického a kostýmního procesu autorky Sorchy Gibsonové. Uncharted Waters: Olga Neuwirth and Women in Surrealism and Opera analyses Olga Neuwirth’s music-theatre piece Bählamms Fest within the context of women in Surrealism and Opera, as a basis for understanding the conceptual set and costume design process undertaken by author Sorcha Gibson. Female surrealists and their importance in the present, as well as women’s historical and contemporary standing within opera is examined in relation to Bählamms Fest, which has immense political and historical significance within art, opera, music, and history. Bählamms Fest is interpreted as a multifaceted music-theatre composition, which builds on existing artist histories of women, and the composer’s own female experiences to form a deeply layered and extensive art work, while recontextualizing the female experience. Through her dissemination of Leonora Carrington’s play and body of work, as well as her collaboration with Elfriede Jelinek, a talented author in her own right; Bählamms Fest is an important piece of political music-theatre which seeks to elevate women’s voices and importance within the arts for the present

Thermodynamic characterization of the protein-protein interaction in the heteromeric Bacillus subtilis pyridoxalphosphate synthase

Two biosynthetic routes for the synthesis of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), the biologically active compound of vitamin B6, have been characterized. The major pathway leads to direct formation of PLP from a pentasaccharide and a trisaccharide and is operative in plants, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria. This reaction is catalyzed by a single glutamine amidotransferase enzyme complex consisting of a pyridoxal synthase, termed Pdx1, and a glutaminase, termed Pdx2. In this complex, Pdx2 generates ammonia from L-glutamine and supplies it to Pdx1 for incorporation into PLP. The glutaminase activity of Pdx2 requires the presence of Pdx1 in a heteromeric complex, previously characterized by a crystallographic three-dimensional (3D) structure determination. Here, we give a thermodynamic description of complex formation of Bacillus subtilis PLP synthase in the absence or presence of L-glutamine. We show that L-glutamine directly affects the tightness of the protein complex, which exhibits dissociation constants of 6.9 and 0.3 microM in its absence and presence, respectively (at 25 degrees C). This result relates to the positioning of L-glutamine on the heterodimer interface as seen in the 3D structure. In an analysis of the temperature dependence of the enthalpy, negative heat capacity changes (deltaCp) agree with a protein interface governed by hydrophobic interactions. The measured heat capacity change is also a function of L-glutamine, with a negative deltaCp in the presence of L-glutamine and a more negative one in its absence. These findings suggest that L-glutamine not only affects the strength of complex formation but also determines the forces involved in complex formation, with regard to different relative contributions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions

‘Urbanisation of Everybody’, Institutional Imperatives, and Social Transformation in Pakistan

Cultural change and social transformation are essential elements of the process of development. They complement and sustain economic growth. Economic historians acknowledge that the rise of the West from poverty to wealth was as much the result of improvements in trade, savings, investment and productivity as of emerging norms of thrift, trust, specialisation, rationality and contractual relations [Rosenberg and Birdzell (1986)]. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that economic development is essentially a phenomenon of cultural change. The recognition of the role of cultural and social factors in economic growth has led to a subtle revision of the terminology from ‘economic development’ to the adjectiveless term ‘development’ or the fully spelled out title of economic and social development. Yet this acknowledgement has remained largely on the conceptual plane. It has not been translated into policies and programmes to deliberately set the direction of cultural change and define the alignment of social organisation. Development strategies have, by and large, treated social and cultural factors as exogenous variables. This is true of development planning in general and in particular of its practice in Pakistan. In fifty years of economic planning in Pakistan, little attention has been paid to the social and cultural aspects of development. This paper argues that the neglect of social and cultural factors has created an institutional lag between spatial, economic and technological sectors on the one hand and the cultural, social and political institutions, on the other. Pakistan is predominantly an urbanised society spatially and demographically, but its social institutions and cultural ethos remain rooted in traditions of rural origins.

Braid groups of non-orientable surfaces and the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence

Let M be a compact, connected non-orientable surface without boundary and of genus g >= 3. We investigate the pure braid groups P,(M) of M, and in particular the possible splitting of the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence 1 -> P(m)(M \ {x(1), ..., x(n)}) hooked right arrow P(n+m)(M) (P*) under right arrow P(n)(M) -> 1, where m, n >= 1, and p* is the homomorphism which corresponds geometrically to forgetting the last m strings. This problem is equivalent to that of the existence of a section for the associated fibration p: F(n+m)(M) -> F(n)(M) of configuration spaces, defined by p((x(1), ..., x(n), x(n+1), ..., x(n+m))) = (x(1), ..., x(n)). We show that p and p* admit a section if and only if n = 1. Together with previous results, this completes the resolution of the splitting problem for surface pure braid groups. Angelika Neurwirth And Qur'anic Textual Originality (Epistemological Analysis Of Emmanuel Kant's Perspective)

    Get PDF
This paper reviews Neuwirth's thoughts regarding the originality of the Qur'anic text. According to Neuwirth, the texts of the Qur'an have been considered unoriginal because they have been influenced by Jewish and Christian traditions because the sources and methodologies used still have flaws. In reviewing Neuwirth's thoughts, this research focuses on the epistemology of Angelika Neuwirth's thoughts related to the originality of the Qur'anic text. Departing from the theory used, this paper discusses three questions. First, the sources used by Neuwirth, the methodology used, and how the validity of truth related to the originality of the Qur'anic text according to Neuwirth. This research uses a qualitative method by using library research data collection techniques. The data sources used are primary and secondary. Primary sources of the author get from Neuwirth's writings related to the Qur'an and secondary sources obtained from studies with the same object of study such as journals and books. The data that has been collected will be reduced as needed and analyzed using Emmanuel Kant's epistemology. As for the results of this study, first, Neuwirth uses text sources in the context of late antiquity. Second, Neuwirth uses an intertextuality-based pre-canonization method with a literary and historical approach. This research still has shortcomings, meaning that further research can be carried out related to the epistemology of Neuwirth's angelic thought such as the implications of Neuwirth's thinking for the study of the Qur'an in the West, especially in the scope of scholarship in Indonesia

The theoretical and practical applications of immersive VR, although relatively new, have accomplished much in the area of pedagogical learner applications. This chapter describes the conceptual framework and Revinax® 180-degree stereoscopic video-based approach in addressing the academic achievement gap through conventional surgical students and nurses shadowing and how immersive VR environments may best address leveraging the learner’s capability of increasing their skill acquisition, learning, and knowledge retention in a more efficient time-period, circumventing the inherent issues with conventional shadowing. Further, these VR experiences through first-person Point of View (POV), although simulated and artificial, evoke mirror neurons, and can recruit neurocircuitry that are imperative for skill acquisition and later skill application. As such, the Revinax® instructional design model may provide a unique insight in how to use immersive VR environments to teach any learner that seeks to acquire surgical/medical professional training more efficiently and practically in a modern world of technology.book chapte
