    No full text
Il lavoro propone una prima analisi dell'italiano parlato a Bolzano dalla comunità italofona. Tramite un'analisi sociofonetica della pronuncia delle affricate dentali, questa varietà di italiano viene definita come frutto di un processo di koineizzazione ancora in corso

In this paper, we present sociolinguistic research conducted on Italian schoolchildren learning English as L2. Following on from renowned researchers, we focused on a less studied population, which is school-aged monolingual children. Our participants consisted of 15 students of a fourth-grade class at a primary school in Pavia; all aged around 9 years of age - 7 boys and 8 girls. None of the children present any recorded cognitive problems; they are all Italian L1 speakers with little or no use of other languages at home, and English has been learnt as L2 since the beginning of primary school at age 6. We recorded all the children performing a task of re-narration of a “Tom & Jerry” cartoon, firstly in Italian and then, after one week, in English. The corpus consists of about 2h 45’ of recordings, transcribed and annotated in ELAN. Lexical knowledge in English was also tested through a questionnaire before the recordings. The results were analyzed both qualitatively and, partly, quantitatively. During qualitative analysis, two elements were observed: (1) general tendencies in speakers’ general behavior and (2) differences in the relationship between syntactic-conversational system and gesture system in relation to L1/L2. The quantitative analysis shows a difference in the use of beats gestures and iconic ones between L1 and L2, but also between boys and girls. The main findings of the current research are: (1) frequent use of gesture during L1 recordings, in contrast to a general decrease of gesture during L2 recordings; (2) gesture as linguistic reinforcing or replacement of speech production during L1 recordings, in contrast to gesture as a problem-solving strategy during L2 recordings; (3) generally, offline knowledge in L2 is not reflected in online knowledge

Inter-speaker accommodation and within-dialect variability. Dental affricates and fricative realisation in Marchigiano

This study examines the acoustic properties of interactions among speakers of Le Marche’s regional variety of Italian. The target population are Italian speakers of two provinces of Le Marche region, Ancona and Macerata, aged 22-26. In particular, this study investigates how social and linguistic variables such as sex and origin influence the speakers’ production of complex (or ‘marked’) sounds like affricates and fricatives during interactions. Data was collected by a background questionnaire, a reading and an interactive task. Results have shown that speakers of different origin tend to accommodate to one another, thus signalling their desire of being included in the interlocutor’s linguistic group, whereas those belonging to the same province tend to mark their own characteristics flagging their membership to the same ‘social’ group. Moreover, following Labov’s theories, women accommodate only towards the variants that are perceived as ‘socially prestigious’, being those of Macerata

Fonetica sperimentale e fonologia: questioni ancora aperte e possibili interfacce

Ohala 1990, 2005)

Phonetic variation in Italian L2: An acoustic analysis of sibilant fricatives in the speech of L1 Spanish learners = Variació fonètica en italià com a L2: Una anàlisi acústica de les fricatives sibilants en la parla d’aprenents amb l’espanyol com a L1

The present study investigates the acoustic features of Italian sibilant fricatives (/s/, /z/ and /ʃ/) in the speech of L1 Spanish learners. Segmental duration, degree of voicing and place of articulation of learners’ productions are analysed alongside those of a control group of L1 Italian speakers to investigate the fine-grained phonetic differences between native and non-native pronunciation. Results from a quantitative analysis suggest that factors such as the degree of typological markedness of the phoneme and the influence of the L1 in perception and production affect L2 pronunciation to a different extent for each of the target sounds

The quality and quantity of the input to which a learner of an L2 is exposed are essential factors for the development, in the interlanguage, of complex traits such as the article. The sociolinguistics of immigration, which correlates acquisition variables with social aspects, postulates that the type of social network in which the learner is inserted determines his/her exposure to the input and, therefore, the results of the acquisition. Assuming this theoretical perspective, in this article we analyse the production of the article in the speech of 12 Ukrainian-speaking spontaneous learners of L2 Italian

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
