Performance and Usability Implications of Multiplatform and WebAssembly Containers
peer reviewedDocker and WebAssembly (Wasm) are two pivotal technologies in modern software development, each offering unique strengths in portability and performance. The rise of Wasm, particularly in conjunction with container runtimes, highlights its potential to enhance efficiency in diverse application stacks. However, a notable gap remains in understanding how Wasm containers perform relative to traditional multi-platform containers across multiple architectures and workloads, especially when optimizations are employed. In this paper, we aim to empirically assess the performance and usability implications of native multi-platform containers versus Wasm containers under optimized configurations. We focus on critical metrics including startup time, pull time (both fresh and cached), and image sizes for three distinct workloads and architectures- AMD64 (AWS bare metal) and two embedded boards: Nvidia Jetson Nano with ARM64 and Starfive VisionFive2 with RISCV64. To address these objectives, we c onducted a series of experiments using docker and containerd in multi-platform built images for native containers and Wasmtime as the WebAssembly runtime within contain-erd/docker’s ecosystem. Our findings show that while native containers achieve slightly faster startup times, Wasm containers excel in agility and maintain image sizes of approximately 27.0% of their native counterparts and a significant reduction in pull times across all three architectures of up to 25% using containerd. With continued optimizations, Wasm has the potential to emerge as a viable choice in environments that demand both reduced image size and cross-platform portability. It will not replace the current container paradigm soon; rather, it will be integrated into this framework and complement containers instead of replacing them.U-AGR-7134 - BRIDGES2021/IS/16327771 ACE5G Proximus - BRORSSON Mats Haka
Si ce n’était que moi, La sclérose latérale amyotrophique (ALS), Témoignage (If it was just me, Testimony)<em></em> : The translation from Swedish to French of <em>Om det bara var jag, </em>by Tina Jansson
Au-delà de la peur, au-delà de la souffrance, l’auteur pose un regard lucide sur la vie et ses dérapages, avec distance, courage et humour.« If it was just me, if it was just about me. I would make it. I’ll work it out being ill. I can live and think of death. I can stand the pain, that I’m being fed and having my bottom wiped. But, it’s also the others, family, the children, parents, sisters and brothers, nephews and nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbours, acquaintances... and the unknown.» Mother of three, Tina Jansson suffers from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis since 2006. Translated from Swedish to French by her cousin Hedvig Brorsson-Jakobiak, her testimony invites us to share the intimacy of this disease, also called the Lou Gehrig’s disease, through a collection of daily chronicles. Beyond the fear, beyond suffering, the author poses a clear look on life and its skids, with distance courage and humour.</p
A reduced level of consciousness affects non-conscious processes
Being conscious is a profound aspect of human existence, and understanding its function and its inception is considered one of the truly grand scientific challenges. However, the nature of consciousness remains enigmatic, to a large part because “being conscious” can refer to both the content (phenomenology) and the level (arousal) of consciousness, and how these different aspects are related remains unclear. To empirically assess the relation between level and content of consciousness, we manipulated these two aspects by presenting stimuli consciously or non-consciously and by using Propofol sedation, while brain activity was measured using fMRI. We observed that sedation affected both conscious and non-conscious processes but at different hierarchical levels; while conscious processing was altered in higher-order regions (the intraparietal sulcus) and spared sensory areas, the opposite effect was observed for non-conscious processing. The observation that Propofol affected non-conscious processing calls for a reconsideration of what kind of information one can gain on “consciousness” from recording neural responses to sedation without considering both (content) conscious and (content) non-conscious processing
Biomechanical studies of finger extension function. Analysis with a new force measuring device and ultrasound examination in rheumatoid arthritis and healhty muscles
Aims: The overall aim of this thesis was to further our understanding of extensor muscles and their role for hand function. The aims of the studies were: To develop and evaluate a new device for finger extensor force measurements. To evaluate ultrasound as a tool for assessment of muscle architecture.
To determine the correlation between extensor muscle force and hand function.
To evaluate the degree of impaired finger extensor force in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the correlation to impaired hand function.
To analyse the effect of hand exercise in RA patients and healthy subjects with ultrasound and finger extension force measurements.
Method: A new finger extension force measuring device was developed and an ultrasound based method was used to be able to objectively measure the finger extension force and analyze the static and dynamic extensor muscle architectures. Measurements were made of healthy volunteers (n=127)
and RA patients (n=77) during uninfluenced and experimental conditions. A hand exercise program was performed and evaluated with hand force measurements, hand function test, patient relevant questionnaires (DASH and SF-36) and ultrasound measurements.
Results: The new finger extension force measurement device was developed and then validated with measurements of accuracy as well as test-retest reliability. The coefficient of variation was 1.8 % of the applied load, and the test-retest reliability showed a coefficient of variation no more than 7.1% for
healthy subjects. Ultrasound examination on m. extensor digitorum communis (EDC) showed significant differences between healthy men and healthy women as well as between healthy women and RA patients. The extension and flexion force improved in both groups after six weeks of hand exercise
(p<0.01). Hand function improved in both groups (p<0.01). The RA group showed improvement in the results of the DASH questionnaire (p<0.05). The cross-sectional area of the EDC increased significantly in both groups. Conclusions: A new finger extension force measuring device has been developed which provides objective and reliable data on the extension force capacity of normal and dysfunctional hands and is sufficiently
sensitive to evaluate the effects of hand exercise. US provide useful information about muscle architecture. A significant improvement of hand strength and hand function in RA patients was seen
after six weeks of hand training, the improvement was even more pronounced after 12 weeks. Hand exercise is thus an effective intervention for RA patients, providing better strength and function
intressera andra i denna fråga. Förhoppningsvis kommer jag att med den vunna kunskap som jag fått,
både genom mina egna studier och andras som jag tagit del av under resan, kunna uppmärksamma det

Auto-clustering of Financial Reports Based on Formatting Style and Author’s Fingerprint
peer reviewedWe present a new clustering algorithm of financial reports that is based on the reports’ formatting and style. The algorithm uses layout and content information to automatically generate as many clusters as needed. This allows us to reduce the effort of labeling the reports in order to train text-based machine learning models for extracting person or company names, addresses, financial categories, etc. In addition, the algorithm also produces a set of sub-clusters inside each cluster, where each sub-cluster corresponds to a set of reports made by the same author (person or firm). The information about sub-clusters allows us to evaluate the change in the author over time. We have applied the algorithm to a dataset with over 38,000 financial reports (last Annual Account presented by a company) from the Luxembourg Business Registers (LBR) and found 2,165 clusters between 2 and 850 documents with a median of 4 and an average of 14. When adding 2,500 new documents to the existing cluster set (previous annual accounts presented by companies), we found that 67.3% of the financial reports were placed in the correct cluster and sub-cluster. From the remaining documents, 65% were placed in a different subcluster because the company changed the formatting style, which is expected and correct behavior. Finally, labeling 11% of the entire dataset, we can replicate these labels up to 72% of the dataset, keeping a high feature coverage.U-AGR-7012 - BRIDGES2020/IS/15403349/SCRiPT_Yoba Cont (01/04/2021 - 31/03/2024) - BRORSSON Mats Hakan9.
Title: ”To feel like one when you are two” Action research about how
assistant nurses in an intensive care ward apprehend and defines
participation.
Level: Bachelor in Leadership and organization, 15 hp
Authors: Pia Brorsson and Sara Ekeroth
Adviser: Cecilia Franzén och Jonas Lundsten
Problem: A study on co-workers that had taken place in an Intensive care
unit showed improvement possibilities in the subject participation.
In this study we have chosen to examine how assistant nurses in an
Intensive care ward apprehend and define participation.
Method: Action research where a problem was diagnosed. The action
contained qualitative interviews and the action within the
organization that was based on the result. This will be evaluated.
In a preparation phase to the interviews theories about
participation were studied. Finally the empirical materials have
been analyzed and discussed in relation to the chosen theories.
Conclusion: The result of the study showed four themes on what assisted nurses
in an Intensive care ward feel improve the participation. It was a
good communication, a good teamwork, respect for their
profession and that feedback was given both on an individual and
an organizational level.
Further research: One profession within the studied organization that had a divined
result in the primary study was the doctors. Because of that it
would be interesting to perform the same study on that category.
Contributions: The study has a purpose of creating understanding for what themes
that improves participation for assisted nurses in an Intensive care
unit
Amyloid formation by the pro-inflammatory S100A8/A9 proteins in the ageing prostate.
BACKGROUND: The conversion of soluble peptides and proteins into polymeric amyloid structures is a hallmark of many age-related degenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, type II diabetes and a variety of systemic amyloidoses. We report here that amyloid formation is linked to another major age-related phenomenon--prostate tissue remodelling in middle-aged and elderly men. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: By using multidisciplinary analysis of corpora amylacea inclusions in prostate glands of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer we have revealed that their major components are the amyloid forms of S100A8 and S100A9 proteins associated with numerous inflammatory conditions and types of cancer. In prostate protease rich environment the amyloids are stabilized by dystrophic calcification and lateral thickening. We have demonstrated that material closely resembling CA can be produced from S100A8/A9 in vitro under native and acidic conditions and shows the characters of amyloids. This process is facilitated by calcium or zinc, both of which are abundant in ex vivo inclusions. These observations were supported by computational analysis of the S100A8/A9 calcium-dependent aggregation propensity profiles. We found DNA and proteins from Escherichia coli in CA bodies, suggesting that their formation is likely to be associated with bacterial infection. CA inclusions were also accompanied by the activation of macrophages and by an increase in the concentration of S100A8/A9 in the surrounding tissues, indicating inflammatory reactions. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These findings, taken together, suggest a link between bacterial infection, inflammation and amyloid deposition of pro-inflammatory proteins S100A8/A9 in the prostate gland, such that a self-perpetuating cycle can be triggered and may increase the risk of malignancy in the ageing prostate. The results provide strong support for the prediction that the generic ability of polypeptide chains to convert into amyloids could lead to their involvement in an increasing number of otherwise apparently unrelated diseases, particularly those associated with ageing.Original Publication:Kiran Yanamandra, Oleg Alexeyev, Vladimir Zamotin, Vaibhav Srivastava, Andrei Shchukarev, Ann-Christin Brorsson, Gian Gaetano Tartaglia, Thomas Vogl, Rakez Kayed, Gunnar Wingsle, Jan Olsson, Christopher M Dobson, Anders Bergh, Fredrik Elgh and Ludmilla A Morozova-Roche, Amyloid formation by the pro-inflammatory S100A8/A9 proteins in the ageing prostate., 2009, PloS one, (4), 5, e5562.http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.000556
Do post-translational beta cell protein modifications trigger type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease characterised by specific T cell-mediated destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells. Yet, except for insulin, no beta cell-specific antigens have been discovered. This may imply that the autoantigens in type 1 diabetes exist in modified forms capable of specifically triggering beta cell destruction. In other immune-mediated diseases, autoantigens targeted by the immune system have undergone post-translational modification (PTM), thereby creating tissue-specific neo-epitopes. In a similar manner, PTM of beta cell proteins might create beta cell-specific neo-epitopes. We suggest that the current paradigm of type 1 diabetes as a classical autoimmune disease should be reconsidered since the immune response may not be directed against native beta cell proteins. A modified model for the pathogenetic events taking place in islets leading to the T cell attack against beta cells is presented. In this model, PTM plays a prominent role in triggering beta cell destruction. We discuss literature of relevance and perform genetic and human islet gene expression analyses. Both direct and circumstantial support for the involvement of PTM in type 1 diabetes exists in the published literature. Furthermore, we report that cytokines change the expression levels of several genes encoding proteins involved in PTM processes in human islets, and that there are type 1 diabetes-associated polymorphisms in a number of these. In conclusion, data from the literature and presented experimental data support the notion that PTM of beta cell proteins may be involved in triggering beta cell destruction in type 1 diabetes. If the beta cell antigens recognised by the immune system foremost come from modified proteins rather than native ones, the concept of type 1 diabetes as a classical autoimmune disease is open for debate
LASER-DEPOSITED PRGAO3 FILMS ON SRTIO3 SUBSTRATES AND IN YBA2CU3O7/PRGAO3/YBA2CU3O7 TRILAYERS
PrGaO3 films were successfully grown by laser deposition at temperatures between 730 and 785-degrees-C. The minimum full width at half maximum value of the (004) x-ray diffraction peak was 0.14-degrees, for films deposited on SrTiO3 substrates at 760-degrees-C. The optimum temperature for deposition of PrGaO3 in YBa2Cu3O7/PrGaO3/YBa2Cu3O7 trilayers was found to be 760-degrees-C. Three distinct layers were observed , and the PrGaO3 exhibited two orientations with respect to the c-axis oriented bottom layer; either the [001] or the [110] direction parallel to the YBa2Cu3O7 c axis. Two orthogonal in-plane orientations were observed for each of these cases. The highest resistivity (at 100 K) of the PrGaO3 layer was 10(5) OMEGA cm. Considerable interaction occurred between the PrGaO3 and the YBa2Cu3O7 bottom layer at 785-degrees-C, where the two bottom layers deteriorated.Physics, AppliedSCI(E)12ARTICLE4486-4886
