The Clarion of Syria
When “The Clarion of Syria” was penned, between September 1860 and April 1861, its anonymous author—identified only as “a patriot”—had just witnessed his homeland undergo unprecedented violence in what many today consider Lebanon’s first civil war. Butrus al-Bustani, the author, wrote a series of pamphlets to his fellow Syrians that became a key text of the nineteenth-century literary revival movement known as the Nahda. They addressed an array of universally resonant and locally relevant themes that render the pamphlets pertinent beyond their immediate context. With a style oscillating between Paulinian sermon and Socratic dialogue, the author ponders the meaning of civil war in relation to religion, politics, morality, society, and civilization. Above all, the text was an anti-sectarian clarion call to build a cohesive and “civilized” Syrian society in place of what the author considered a community gripped by the most pernicious of conflicts, violent fanaticism and factionalism. Rereading the pamphlets in the context of today’s political violence in war-torn Syria and elsewhere in the Arab world helps us gain a critical and historical perspective on (anti-)sectarianism, conflict resolution, Western interventionism, and national reconciliation. This translation thereby makes an important historical document accessible for the first time to an English audience
The Clarion of Syria
When Nafir Suriyya—“The Clarion of Syria”—was penned between September 1860 and April 1861, its author Butrus al-Bustani, a major figure in the modern Arabic Renaissance, had witnessed his homeland undergo unprecedented violence in what many today consider Lebanon’s first civil war. Written during Ottoman and European investigations into the causes and culprits of the atrocities, The Clarion of Syria is both a commentary on the politics of state intervention and social upheaval and a set of visions for the future of Syrian society in the wake of conflict. This translation makes a key historical document accessible for the first time to an English audience. Rereading this work in the context of today’s political violence in war-torn Syria and elsewhere in the Arab world helps us gain a critical and historical perspective on sectarianism, class rebellion, foreign invasions, conflict resolution, Western interventionism, and nationalist tropes of reconciliation.
“The first English translation of this foundational text offered alongside a fantastic historical introduction, this is an excellent and much-needed contribution from uniquely qualified scholars.” STEPHEN SHEEHI, author of The Arab Imago

Abstract :
In this work, the relevance of Linda Bustani's (1951- ) pianistic methodology was investigated. The objectives of the study were: (i) to describe Linda Bustani's pianistic methodology, based on the thought and specific guide presented in Campos' book (2017); and (ii) verify which aspects of this methodology were/are put into practice, in the case of a group of piano teachers residing in Portugal. For this, it focused on (i) the piano training obtained by the responding teachers; and (ii) in the teaching that these professors provide. A questionnaire survey, with fifteen items, was applied to forty-two piano teachers. The first five items of the questionnaire obtained the characterization of the respondents. Three items of the questionnaire focused on the presence of elements similar to those of Linda Bustani's methodology in their piano training and seven items concerned the use of elements similar to those of Linda Bustani's methodology in their teaching.
Starting from the Internship Report, the work presents, in the first part, the characterization of the city of Covilhã, of the institution EPABI, and of practical individual and group piano lessons given to students from 1st to 5th grade (who are in the range ages twelve to sixteen). In the second part, the biography of Linda Bustani is presented, the description of her piano methodology, the analysis and discussion of the results obtained by the questionnaire and the conclusions and final considerations. This work allowed us to verify the existence of elements of Linda Bustani's methodology in the previous training of the respondents, and in the teaching carried out by them
BEREC: Unleashing its Potential to Promote Europe’s Single Market
Having adopted its amendments to the Commission’s draft Connected Continent Regulation in early April, the European Parliament is now in the midst of elections, and EU’s Council has begun to consider the Commission’s proposals. Camilla Bustani, Head of International Policy at Ofcom argues that the Council should support Parliament’s proposal to harmonise NRA competences, and so enhance the effectiveness of BEREC, the EU’s telecoms regulators’ network
