The Novels of Harold Frederic
I do not intend to defend the obviously untenable thesis that Frederic was a great writer and is not appreciated because of the nature of his subject matter. The author of The Damnation of Theron Ware seldom shows any sign of genius. What Frederic does, and often in a rather workmanlike manner, is tell a story of small-town and country people in upper New York state. In his early works, Seth\u27s Brother\u27s Wife and The Lawton Girl, the author writes about things he knows and has done. The works written about the same time as the two mentioned have a delightful simplicity and naïveté, and incidentally come very close to the realistic tradition in the novel. The majority of Frederic\u27s later works are tinged with a pseudo-sophistication, an artiness which just does not belong, and these elements detract from such an otherwise good thing as The Damnation of Theron Ware
The effect of beliefs on intention and behaviour of speeding among young drivers in Norway: The use of the Theory of Planned Behaviour
Young drivers worldwide play a major role in causing road accidents, largely due to speeding.
Norway is no exception to this trend and faces challenges with speeding among its young
drivers, calling for effective safety measures on the roads. Understanding how these drivers
perceive risks, their beliefs, intentions, and actions is essential for targeted interventions. Apart
from the evident issue of speeding, their perception of risk and their attitudes are key factors
shaping their intentions. This study explores how beliefs impact the intentions and behavior
related to speeding among young drivers in Norway, using the Theory of Planned Behavior as
a framework. The research reveals that attitudes significantly influence intentions to speed and
emphasizes the role of perceived control in their actual speeding behaviors. Additionally, it
identifies subtle differences between male and female drivers in their attitudes, intentions, and
perceived control regarding speeding. These findings stress the importance of taking these
beliefs, risk perceptions, and attitudes into account when designing specific and effective
campaigns against speeding for young drivers in Norway, ultimately improving road safety
measures
Mitigating Wicked Problems Through Sustainable Technological Innovation? The Case of Liquid Natural Clay
The complexity and wicked nature of climate change and the wide variety of its effects has created high uncertainty, knowledge gaps and ambiguities in relation to how to deal, manage, and cope with these issues. The solution alternatives seem ill formulated and ambiguous, and a high variety of actors with different values and visions, enhance these ambiguities, creating more uncertainty. In the face of these problems, the following research study aims to improve the approaches related to the solution alternatives to tackle them, by exploring and applying different elements and embedded in risk governance principles and other recommendations obtained from risk science, and putting them in practice through the analysis of the development and implementation of sustainable technological innovation product, corresponding to Liquid Natural Clay

An Assessment of Ambiguity in Decision Analysis
Master thesis in Risk ManagementThe objective with this thesis is to assess recent advances in decision theory under uncertainty and to find out whether these can be used as an extension to the decision analysis normally performed in the industry. Oil companies put a lot of effort into reducing the uncertainties in their decision making and invest in extensive exploration and front end study activities prior to project sanction. After a project is sanctioned the companies select reliable contractors and monitor performance closely to reduce uncertainties and ensure predictable project execution. Decision analysis may be performed to support decision making at several of these key stages of a project development where identified uncertainties are described by the use of probability distributions and Monte Carlo simulations. The analysis results are then normally represented by an uncertainty range and an expected value of the observable quantities. A qualitative judgement process or management review process is then performed to define a margin that addresses the uncertainty in the results.
Recent advances in decision theory do however have a potential to extend the quantitative modelling approach beyond current decision analysis practise. In this thesis, recent advances in decision theory models have been assessed and an attempt is made to capture the uncertainties and define a single equivalent sure amount for various types of decision problems. The single equivalent sure amount value defined by these extended decision analysis models can potentially support rational decision making and serve as a potential improvement to the management review process of decisions associated with uncertainty.
There are numerous papers to be found that describe normative and descriptive theoretical models for decision analysis, but very few of these are able to translate their theory into practical applications. The paper from Borgonovo & Marinacci (2015) that describe decisions under ambiguity do however stand out as an exception to the rest. This excellent paper describes the theoretical basis and illustrates this theory with numerical analysis of relevant decision problems. In-depth interviews of a selected group of decision makers are included in the qualitative research to assess whether the theoretical models of decision analysis associated with uncertainty are known and used by the industry. Scenarios were also included in the in-depth interviews in order to see how consistent decision makers are when subject to decision problems associated with various forms of uncertainty. Decision problems have been analysed that includes uncertainties relating to business risk, cost risk, production risk and accident risk. The theory and methods for decision analysis under risk and ambiguity are intended to give useful information that support rational decision making and improve the basis for decision support
Comparing Food Health Risk Policy across the Atlantic: EU-US Case Studies on Artificial Sweeteners and Bisphenol A
This thesis examines the food health risk regulation approaches of the EU and the US by studying their policies on artificial sweeteners and Bisphenol A (BPA). These two cases show that both polities have adopted a highly risk- and science-based approach to regulate food health risk, basing regulatory decisions on scientific risk assessments and committing to continuous integration of newly available scientific data. The difference in regulatory approaches mainly pertains to explicit EU adoption of the precautionary principle as one of its several bases for policy-making in contrast to the science-focused American approach. Both the EU and the US are consistent in their food health risk regulation approach time-wise, but responsible institutions in both polities face diverging opinions from other regulatory bodies within their jurisdiction, causing uncertainty to the future policy route they may take. Findings from the cases best support the “convergence” narrative in general trans-Atlantic comparative policy studies, but different level of precaution can potentially lead the polities’ future food health risk policies towards inconsistent directions.
The high level of policy similarity across the Atlantic in the cases can be explained by suitability of risk-informed management style for food health risk, public demand for policy justification incentivizing committed scientific risk assessment, the shaping effect of globalization on public risk communication and the regulators’ active exchange of policy ideas that aim to establish a common regulation approach. The stronger precautionary feature of the EU approach have its root at a clear, discursive institutional division between risk assessment and risk management (rule-making), compared with the US model of a single institution performing both tasks, and the European public’s more cautious attitude towards food health risk during the formation of contemporary EU food law
Effective communication of electricity subsidy removal: A case study of Nigeria.
This research delves into the complexities surrounding the removal of electricity subsidies in Nigeria, a country grappling with chronic electricity shortages and a heavily subsidized energy sector. The study focuses on the critical role of effective communication in navigating public resistance, building trust, and fostering an understanding of the rationale behind subsidy removal in a low-trust environment. By examining the strategies employed by the Nigerian government in communicating subsidy removal and analyzing public responses, valuable insights are gained into the communication challenges inherent in such policy reforms. The research underscores the significance of risk perception, communication strategies, and trust dynamics in shaping the outcomes of subsidy removal initiatives. While acknowledging limitations, such as potential researcher subjectivity and reliance on secondary data sources, the study emphasizes the need for diverse stakeholder perspectives to enrich the analysis. Recommendations include engaging stakeholders, fostering transparency, and tailoring communication efforts to specific audiences to successfully navigate the challenges of subsidy removal and pave the way for sustainable energy transitions. Ultimately, this research highlights the pivotal role of government, consumers, tariffs, the electricity or power sector, and subsidies in managing the policy transitions, contributing to Nigeria's energy sector's long-term sustainability and efficiency
