    Questo mio scritto è in onore del fu Bruno Schettini, amico e collega degli ultimi 5 anni, ora che siamo ancora in attesa di ulteriori sviluppi da parte della Comunità Europea nel campo dell’istruzione permanente ben dieci anni dopo la pubblicazione del Memorandum su questo argomento. Bisogna ancora vedere se nuove strade si dipartiranno dall‟opinione dominante dello scorso decennio e se siano state recepite le lezioni che scaturiscono dalle critiche pubblicate da un certo numero di scrittori, incluso un libro scritto da Ettore Gelpi che Bruno Schettini aiutò a pubblicare in italiano e per il quale scrisse una introduzione molto perspicace. In questo intervento intendo fornire un riassunto del concetto di lifelong learning e di come l‟OECD abbia mutato le sue origini nate in seno all‟UNESCO, ma più specificamente dalle mutazione dovute ai 6 messaggi emanati dalla Comunità Europea e contenuti nel Memorandum on Lifelong Learning . Nello stesso tempo cercherò di spiegare come il discorso su questo argomento possa essere portato avanti fino a diventare un vero e proprio contributo al rafforzamento della democrazia.peer-reviewe

    Autonomous Approach and Landing Algorithms for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, several research activities have been developed in order to increase the autonomy features in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), to substitute human pilots in dangerous missions or simply in order to execute specific tasks more efficiently and cheaply. In particular, a significant research effort has been devoted to achieve high automation in the landing phase, so as to allow the landing of an aircraft without human intervention, also in presence of severe environmental disturbances. The worldwide research community agrees with the opportunity of the dual use of UAVs (for both military and civil purposes), for this reason it is very important to make the UAVs and their autolanding systems compliant with the actual and future rules and with the procedures regarding autonomous flight in ATM (Air Traffic Management) airspace in addition to the typical military aims of minimizing fuel, space or other important parameters during each autonomous task. Developing autolanding systems with a desired level of reliability, accuracy and safety involves an evolution of all the subsystems related to the guide, navigation and control disciplines. The main drawbacks of the autolanding systems available at the state of art concern or the lack of adaptivity of the trajectory generation and tracking to unpredicted external events, such as varied environmental condition and unexpected threats to avoid, or the missed compliance with the guide lines imposed by certification authorities of the proposed technologies used to get the desired above mentioned adaptivity. During his PhD period the author contributed to the development of an autonomous approach and landing system considering all the indispensable functionalities like: mission automation logic, runway data managing, sensor fusion for optimal estimation of vehicle state, trajectory generation and tracking considering optimality criteria, health management algorithms. In particular the system addressed in this thesis is capable to perform a fully adaptive autonomous landing starting from any point of the three dimensional space. The main novel feature of this algorithm is that it generates on line, with a desired updating rate or at a specified event, the nominal trajectory for the aircraft, based on the actual state of the vehicle and on the desired state at touch down point. Main features of the autolanding system based on the implementation of the proposed algorithm are: on line trajectory re-planning in the landing phase, fully autonomy from remote pilot inputs, weakly instrumented landing runway (without ILS availability), ability to land starting from any point in the space and autonomous management of failures and/or adverse atmospheric conditions, decision-making logic evaluation for key-decisions regarding possible execution of altitude recovery manoeuvre based on the Differential GPS integrity signal and compatible with the functionalities made available by the future GNSS system. All the algorithms developed allow reducing computational tractability of trajectory generation and tracking problems so as to be suitable for real time implementation and to still obtain a feasible (for the vehicle) robust and adaptive trajectory for the UAV. All the activities related to the current study have been conducted at CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Center) in the framework of the aeronautical TECVOL project whose aim is to develop innovative technologies for the autonomous flight. The autolanding system was developed by the TECVOL team and the author’s contribution to it will be outlined in the thesis. Effectiveness of proposed algorithms has been then evaluated in real flight experiments, using the aeronautical flying demonstrator available at CIRA

    Edizione e commento dei Cypria

    My research has as its goal the critical edition, translation into Italian, and commentary of the fragments of a lost poem, entitled Cypria, (the first one of the Troy cycle, dated around VII-VI century B.C.). My work is based on the Bernabé edition, but differs from this one both for editorial choices and for the exclusion of some fragments from the text. Through the formulaic and linguistic analysis of the textual fragments it is possible to assess what formulaic repertory was used by the poet (at the same time traditional and innovative) and to date the poem, even if the version we possess could not be the original one but a later Attic copy. For other fragments that lack attribution to an author or a title, it is possible to hypothesize their inclusion in the poem thanks to the indication included in the sources of the “Neoteroi” (cyclic poets), to be identified specifically with the author of Cypria. The attribution of frr. 6-7 (rather, their author is Nevius, a minor Latin poet), 12 and 16 B. to this poem is dubious. The same goes for 12 B., concerning Helen’s children, perhaps authored by a local Cypriot historian, and for 16. My analysis has underscored the characteristic nature of this poem, i.e., its “ethos,” quite different from the one of the Iliad because of the proliferation of fantastic, miraculous, and romantic scenes; the constant presence of the divine, of non-heroic episodes, and of various aspects of conviviality. Therefore the Cypria, are less linked to the heroic values expressed in the Iliad and offer the possibility of exploring and analyzing the epic in a different way and yet within the same tradition, by emphasizing some myths and/or some aspects and marginalizing others. In fact, in four fragments we may also find a local or epichoric aspect in the way they treat some myths.Oggetto della ricerca è l’edizione, la traduzione, il commento dei frammenti di un poema perduto, i Cypria (collocato all’inizio del ciclo epico troiano e databile al VII-VI sec. a.C.). Il lavoro prende come punto di riferimento l’edizione di Bernabé; tuttavia si discosta in parte da essa sia per quanto concerne alcune scelte editoriali, sia per l’inclusione di alcuni frammenti di contenuto. Grazie all’analisi formulare e linguistica condotta sui frammenti testuali è possibile trarre delle considerazioni sia sul repertorio di formule usato dal poeta (in parte tradizionale, in parte innovativo) sia sulla datazione del poema, anche se la veste linguistica in cui è pervenuto potrebbe non essere quella originaria (ipotesi di successiva redazione attica). L’analisi dei frammenti di contenuto ha permesso di ricostruire più in dettaglio episodi la cui presenza è attestata anche nella trama del poema esemplata da Proclo. Per altri frammenti invece, nonostante l’assenza nelle fonti del titolo o dell’autore, si può ipotizzare una loro assegnazione al poema per l’attribuzione delle vicende narrate ai poeti Neoteroi o ciclici, da identificarsi con i poeti del ciclo, in particolare con l’autore dei Cypria. È emersa inoltre la dubbia attribuzione dei frr. 6-7 B. (da attribuire a Nevio, un oscuro poeta latino); 12 B. sui figli di Elena (forse di uno storico locale cipriota); 16. L’analisi ha evidenziato la caratteristica peculiare del poema, il cui ethos si distingue nettamente da quello dell’Iliade (per la presenza di episodi di carattere romanzesco, connessi con il magico e il favoloso; per la costante presenza dell’elemento divino, di episodi poco rispondenti alle virtù eroiche o di aspetti quali la commensalità). Pertanto i Cypria, che dimostrano un’aderenza minore ai valori eroici espressi nell’Iliade, evidenziano la possibilità, all’interno di un medesima tradizione, di trattare in modo differente la materia epica, enfatizzandone alcuni miti e/o aspetti e marginalizzandone altri. È inoltre rilevabile in quattro frammenti una componente locale o epicorica nella trattazione di alcuni miti

    The Maximum Genus Problem for Locally Cohen-Macaulay Space Curves

    Let P_{\textsc{max}}(d,s) denote the maximum arithmetic genus of a locally Cohen-Macaulay curve of degree dd in \PP^3 that is not contained in a surface of degree <s<s. A bound P(d,s)P(d, s) for P_{\textsc{max}}(d,s) has been proven by the first author in characteristic zero and then generalized in any characteristic by the third author. In this paper, we construct a large family C\mathcal{C} of primitive multiple lines and we conjecture that the generic element of C\mathcal{C} has good cohomological properties. From the conjecture it would follow that P(d,s)= P_{\textsc{max}}(d,s) for d=sd=s and for every d2s1d \geq 2s-1. With the aid of \emph{Macaulay2} we checked this holds for s120s \leq 120 by verifying our conjecture in the corresponding range

    Making eco-sustainable floating offshore wind farms: Siting, mitigations, and compensations

    Floating Offshore Wind Farms (FOWFs) are the most promising renewable energy resource. Floating turbines are installed at progressively increasing water depths, interacting with offshore and deep-sea ecosystems. Thus, specific criteria to enable a sound and accurate Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are required. The still limited understanding of the impacts of FOWFs, and the concerns for the conflicts in the use of maritime space (e.g., fisheries), might lead to a more precautionary approach and constrain their development. Here we describe the characteristics of the deep habitats potentially impacted and identify a set of comprehensive and standardized criteria, response variables and approaches for a reliable EIA based on an Ecosystem-based approach. These analyses will support an appropriate design and site prioritization to respect the “Do No Significant Harm" principle. Considering the wide heterogeneity among habitats and geographic regions, we examined the potential interactions of FOWFs with i) Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems; ii) critical habitats; iii) migratory routes of large marine vertebrates; iv) habitat-forming species, benthic/pelagic organisms, v) migratory routes of birds/chiropters; vi) other human uses leading to cumulative/synergistic effects and any other potential interference. We identified mitigation and compensation measures and explored the potential of wind-farm areas as “Other Effective Conservation Measures” to support sustainable fisheries and passive restoration. Adequate siting, EIA and systematic monitoring can minimize FOWFs’ environmental interactions, with final negligible, or even positive effects on marine ecosystems. Standardized criteria could significantly reduce the bottlenecks in permitting while offering a strategic vision for the sustainable use of the maritime space. © 2024 The Author

    Prognostic value of circulating tumor cells in nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer: a CellSearch analysis.

    Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) provide prognostic information in patients with metastatic tumors. Recent studies have shown that CTCs are released in circulation in an early phase of cancer disease so that their presence is under investigation in the adjuvant setting. Few studies investigated the prognostic significance of CTCs enumeration in patients with metastatic and advanced bladder cancer. The current study has analyzed the presence of CTC in patients with nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Patients and methods: Forty-four NMIBC patients were enrolled and included in a 24-month follow-up program. Blood drawings were carried out in all patients at the first diagnosis. CellSearch system (Veridex; LLC, Raritan, NJ) was used for CTCs enumeration. Results: CTC were detectable in 8/44 patients (18%). Presence of CTC was found significantly associated to shorter time to first recurrence (6.5 versus 21.7 months, P < 0.001). Median time to progression was not reached, due to the short follow-up period. CTC presence was found associated to concomitant carcinoma in situ and higher T category. Conclusion: The detection of CTC in this setting of disease may allow to distinguish patients with high risk of recurrence from those with high risk of progression, as well as to early identify patients candidate for adjuvant treatment. © The Author 2012.     The span of singular tuples of a tensor beyond the boundary format

    A singular kk-tuple of a tensor TT of format (n1,,nk)(n_1,\ldots,n_k) is essentially a complex critical point of the distance function from TT constrained to the cone of tensors of format (n1,,nk)(n_1,\ldots,n_k) of rank at most one. A generic tensor has finitely many complex singular kk-tuples, and their number depends only on the tensor format. Furthermore, if we fix the first k1k-1 dimensions nin_i, then the number of singular kk-tuples of a generic tensor becomes a monotone non-decreasing function in one integer variable nkn_k, that stabilizes when (n1,,nk)(n_1,\ldots,n_k) reaches a boundary format. In this paper, we study the linear span of singular kk-tuples of a generic tensor. Its dimension also depends only on the tensor format. In particular, we concentrate on special order three tensors and order-kk tensors of format (2,,2,n)(2,\ldots,2,n). As a consequence, if again we fix the first k1k-1 dimensions nin_i and let nkn_k increase, we show that in these special formats, the dimension of the linear span stabilizes as well, but at some concise non-sub-boundary format. We conjecture that this phenomenon holds for an arbitrary format with k>3k>3. Finally, we provide equations for the linear span of singular triples of a generic order three tensor TT of some special non-sub-boundary format. From these equations, we conclude that TT belongs to the linear span of its singular triples, and we conjecture that this is the case for every tensor format.Comment: 20 pages, 2 tables.     Rassegna delle ricerche effettuate dall'autore nel campo delle misure di vibrazioni con ottiche/interferometria laser speckle. Abstract: "In this paper Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) technique is presented for the structural dynamics of mechanical components. Starting from a brief description of its principles, ESPI is shown with its potentials for the inquiry in complex-shaped displacement fields, due to heterogeneous structure or complex vibration patters, in a wide frequency range. The applications range from integrity inspection, to vibration analysis and to fatigue life assessment. This paper illustrates a review of the researches of the author on the ESPI capabilities in experimental dynamics.

    Regulating Reprogenetics: Strategic Sacralisation and Semantic Message

    This paper forms part of the feminist critique of the regulatory consequences of biomedicine's systematic exclusion of the role of women's bodies in the development ofreprogenetic technologies. I suggest that strategic use of notions of the sacred to decontextualise and delimit disagreement fosters this marginalisation. Here conceptions of the sacred a sacralisation afford a means by which pragmatic consensus over regulation may be achieved, through the deployment of a bricolage of dense images associated with cultural loyalties to solidify support or to exclude contradictory elements. Hence an explicit renegoation of the symbolic order structuring salient debates is necessary to disrupt and enrich the entrenched and exclusionary dominant discourse over reprogenetic regulation of infertility treatment and embryo research in the UNited Kingdom, the cultural anthropology of biomedicine and feminist ethnographies of reprogenetics to illustrate these claims
