Role of Subhash Chandra Bose in National Movement

    No full text
Subhash Chandra Bose 23 January 1897 – 18 August 1945) was an Indian nationalist whose defiance of British authority in India made him a hero among many Indians, but his wartime alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a legacy vexed by authoritarianism, anti-Semitism, and military failure. The honorific Netaji (Hindi: "Respected Leader") was first applied to Bose in Germany in early 1942—by the Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and by the German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin. It is now used throughout India

Animalia Humorosum: Aesop's animal fables made more believable with a modern twist

There is much that is unusual about this 8½” square booklet of 28 pages followed by two pages of advertisements for other books by Óla. For starters, the pages are purple with light-colored typeface and cutout colored characters in partial-page illustrations. The T of C uses superscript to indicate page numbers for the twelve fables. That same page clarifies that Ólafia L. Óla is a pseudonym for V. Subhash. In TH, the hare, not the tortoise, challenges to a race upon no provocation. The author turns this tale into the more usual “Rabbit Races the Hedgehog,” famous among Grimm’s fairytales. Every one of the species looks the same to the superficial hare. In LM, after the mouse frees the lion, the hungry lion eats the mouse. “Steer clear of known dangers.” DW is told just as in the tradition. “Better die on your feet than live on your knees.” In TB, the second traveler takes off his socks; the smell of them revolts the bear, who departs. What did the bear whisper to him? “Tell that fellow that trees offer no safety because bears are good climbers.” The ox makes up a snake friend to worry the dog out of his manger. A passing hunter saves the shepherd boy attacked by a real wolf. The mice do manage to get a bell around the cat’s neck by having it ready around their hole when the cat pokes in its head. Two foxes jump for grapes. One reacts according to the tradition. The other says the effort has been stupid. “We are foxes. We don’t eat grapes. Let’s go and catch some rabbits.” One of two crows suggests the traditional pebble approach. The other says that will take too much time and too many pebbles and will dirty the water. He manages to knock over the pitcher and they can drink both from the water spilled and the water still in the overturned pitcher. The owner of the golden goose eventually stops reading his mail, misses paying taxes, loses his property, and has to give up the goose as compensation for the unpaid taxes. The wolf escapes the lambskin and never comes back. The crow removes the doughnut from his mouth and tells the fox to move along.Ólafia L. Óla (V. Subhash

When the present moves towards the future, leaving the past as a witness, it changes itself and reaches its end. In this change, even if the external structure changes, the ideological infrastructure remains intact. Then we do not call it change, but evolution. However, this evolution is not only an evolution of spatial geography and temporal dimensions; it is also an evolution of the mind and mood of the evolved person. Subhash Mukherjee is no exception of this thinking. He is a real example of such evolution. Not only in his political philosophy of life, but also in his literary-centered meditations, poet Subhash Mukhopadhyay did not follow a set path. He changed his opinion, but remained steadfast in his goal. He moved away from leftism ideology and joined hands with Gandhism. That is true. However, he did not abandon communism. Evolution is the law of the ideological universe. But we must see to it that, that evolved consciousness does not hurt the collective convictions. Subhash Mukhopadhyay is a skilled thinker-artist in this work. Therefore, in the article under discussion, the primary intention of the author will be to create an outline of evolution in terms of Subhash Mukhopadhyay’s criticism of life, social consciousness, political thought, poetic thought, poetic justice, linguistic thought, aesthetic sense etc. It is to be noted that more examples will be provided from the poet\u27s various poems to authenticate the logical tradition of the discussion. However, for the purpose of presenting the subject matter of the article, various literary forms such as novels, letters or songs will also be used in addition to the poet\u27s poems. And by the end of the article, following these steps, we will reach the evolved consciousness of poet Subhash Mukhopadhyay

Contribution of Azad Hind Fauj in India\u27s Freedom Struggle

    No full text
After taking over the command of the Azad Hind Fauj, in October 1943, the Prime Minister of the provisional government, Subhash Chandra Bose, declared war against the Allies including Britain and the United States. For the independence of India, Subhash Chandra Bose opened schools for the training of the Azad Hind Fauj. INA is found in almost all the countries of East Asia. Branches were established. Subhash Chandra Bose, while addressing the soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj, gave the slogan of \u27Delhi Chalo\u27, because he believed that if the Azad Hind Fauj fought the British government on Indian soil, then the Indian soldiers present in the British Army would also support them. The first battalion of the Azad Hind Fauj reached Burma in January 1944 AD. This battalion was sent from Burma to take over Imphal and Kohima in India. By February 1944, the Azad Hind Fauj had fought the British forces in a mountainous area like Haka Kalam through Burma. By September 1944, the Azad Hind Fauj had captured many areas of Indian land while fighting the British army. This army had captured 250 miles of India\u27s territory. But after the victory of the Allies in the Second World War and the defeat of Japan, the Azad Hind Fauj was surrounded from all sides, yet they continued to fight the British army. Finally, due to a lack of logistics and due to Netaji\u27s order, the Azad Hind Fauj had to surrender. In the end, it can be said that Subhash Chandra Bose and Azad Hind Fauj tried for the independence of the country which could not succeed. But this led to the development of a sense of nationalism among the Indian people and the people made efforts to get rid of the British rule. So on August 15, 1947, India became independent

Decoding "Public authority" under the RTI act: a comment on Subhash Chandra Aggarwal v. Indian national congress

    No full text
The June, 2013 order of the Central Information Commission ("CIC") in Subhash Chandra Aggarwal v. Indian National Congress which brought political parties within the scope of the Right to Information ("RTI") Act, has highlighted some issues regarding the drafting and interpretation of the RTI Act. The CIC held that the six national political parties which were respondents in the case, have the ingredients that qualify them as "public authorities" within the meaning of section 2(h) of the RTI Act. In this comment the author argues that the reasoning for holding what constitutes substantial financing that makes a body a "public authority" is not clear and the interpretation of the definition of "public authority" is inconsisten

The Ideal And The Real: Characters As Foils And Complements In The Lowland

    No full text
This paper is an attempt to analyze the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland as foils as well as complements. Subhash and Udayan, the principal protagonists of the novel, are poles apart when it comes to their political ideologies and worldviews. One is a radical Marxist and the other is a more balanced and politically neutral person who is skeptical of sudden revolution. One is an admirer of Subhash Bose and Mao while the other practices the Gandhian values of humanity, kindness and tolerance. The paper tries to analyze the contradiction between violent political activism and a pragmatic and humane approach through Udayan and Subhash respectively. Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland which covers a span of almost 60 to 65 years, shows the various political and social changes which the middle and lower middle class family of Calcutta pass through. The novel depicts clashes of various ideologies as they shape the political discourse particularly in the aftermath of independence. The novel tells the story of two brothers who belong to a lower-middle class family of Tollygunge in South Calcutta. Subhash and Udayan are the two brothers who right from the beginning are brilliant students with enquiring minds. Out of them, Udayan is the rebel who, in his quest to change the society, is so blinded by ideology that he destroys his own world. For the ordinary people like Udayan’s parents he might appear to be brave but Lahiri questions such notions of bravery which looses anarchy on th

Plasma zinc antioxidant vitamins, glutathione levels and total antioxidant activity in oral leukoplakia

    No full text
Background: Leukoplakia is a common, potentially premalignant lesion with malignant transformation rate from 1 to 17% with highest transformation rate for the lesions on the floor of the mouth, soft palate and tongue. One of the main etiological factors is consuming areca nut and its commercial preparations which generate high levels of reactive oxygen species during their metabolism. So the aim of this present study is to evaluate the plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins, antioxidant mineral zinc, glutathione and total antioxidant status (TAS) in leukoplakia patients. Materials and Methods: For this cross-sectional study, we selected 23 newly diagnosed oral leukoplakia patients of both sexes within the age group 28-40 years and the same number of age and sex matched healthy individuals without having history of any systemic illness were selected as control group. In both the groups, we measured plasma antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, antioxidant mineral zinc, GSH and TAS. Student′s t test was applied and the P value <0.001 was considered as statistically significant. Results: We observed very low levels of antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, antioxidant mineral zinc and antioxidant metabolite GSH (P<0.001) and at the same time we also observed very poor (TAS) (P<0.001) in leukoplakia patients when compared to patients in control group. Conclusion: The consumption of tobacco or areca quid which contains high copper levels creates an oxidative stress like environment during their metabolism, might play a major role in causation and propagation of oral leukoplakia

Is serum retinol binding protein-4: A predictor for diabetes in genetically high risk population?

    No full text
Background: Retinol binding protein-4 (BP-4) a new adipocytokine, specifically binds to retinol, through experimental studies, reported its link between obesity and insulin resistance (IR). But till date no studies are available on influence of genetic predisposition of diabetes on RBP-4 expression. Hence, we aimed to study the influence of genetic predisposition of diabetes on the serum RBP-4 and its role in development of IR and diabetes in genetically high risk population. Materials and Methods: Healthy non diabetic individuals (age 18 to 22) were grouped into Group I: Control (n = 81), whose parents are non diabetic, non hypertensive and does not have any family history of coronary heart diseases. Group II: (n = 157) with one of their parents diabetic and Group III: (n = 47) with both parents diabetic. In all the participants, we estimated fasting serum RBP-4, insulin and glucose. Homeostasis model for assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and homeostasis model for assessment-beta cell dysfunction (HOMA-B) were calculated from fasting serum insulin and glucose levels. Results: In this study, we observed significantly higher RBP-4 levels 12.71 ΁ 2.3 in Group-II and 13.25 ΁ 2 in Group-III, respectively when compared to Group-I 11.4 ΁ 1.8 (P < 0.01). RBP-4 showed a significantly strong positive correlation with plasma insulin, glucose and HOMA-IR in genetically high risk population (group II and III) P < 0.01. Linear regression analysis revealed a strong positive association of RBP-4 with parental diabetes even after adjusting for BMI, age and sex (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.089-1.40). Conclusion: Higher serum RBP-4 and its positive correlation with Insulin, glucose, and HOMA-IR in healthy non diabetic participants of genetically high risk population, indicating its role as predictor for the onset of diabetes in coming future
