    Existence and asymptotic properties of solitary-wave solutions of Benjamin-type equations

    Benjamin recently put forward a model equation for the evolution of waves on the interface of a two-layer system of fluids in which surface tension effects are not negligible. It is our purpose here to investigate the solitary-wave solutions of Benjamin\u27s model. For a class of equations that includes Benjamin\u27s model featuring conflicting contributions to dispersion from dynamic effects on the interface and surface tension, we establish existence of travelling-wave solutions. Using the recently developed theory of Li and Bona, we are also able to determine rigorously the spatial asymptotics of these solutions

    This article examines the legacy and impact of Jerry B. Harvey on the field of organizational behavior in general, and on the author specifically. After a cursory review of some of Harvey’s most well-known and controversial writings, or “meditations” as he called them, the author recounts a very personal episode with Harvey during his time as a doctoral student at George Washington University. A detailed account of the exchange between teacher and student is provided, and the broader implications of this experience are explored.</jats:p

    In this essay, we study the initial-value problem (Equation Presented) where u = u(x, t) is a real-valued function, L is a Fourier multiplier operator with real symbol α(ξ), say, and g is a, smooth, real-valued function of a real variable. Equations of this form arise as models of wave propagation in a variety of physical contexts. Here, fundamental issues of local and global well-posedness are established for Lp, Hs and bore-like or kink-like initial data. It looks at the agricultural production structure in the region prior to the division of Germany in 1945 as well as the patterns which arose under the communist government. The second section starts with the 1989 situation and then discusses the initial adjustments seen as market forces are introduced -- 1990 and 1991.     Britain’s Right to Roam: Redefining the Landowner's Bundle of Sticks

Anderson is the Richard M. and Anita Calkins Professor of Law, Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.Britain recently enacted a “right to roam” in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW) 2000. At first glance, CRoW appears to be a dramatic curtailment of the landowner’s traditional right to exclude; it opens up all private land classified as “mountain, moor, heath, or down” to the public for hiking and picnicking. Yet, when viewed in the light of history, CRoW may be seen as partially restoring to the commoner rights lost during the enclosure period, when the commons system ended. CRoW also represents a return to a functional rather than spatial form of land ownership, allowing more than one party to have rights in a particular piece of land. The new law highlights some important public values regarding freedom of access that have been all but forgotten in the United States. The law calls into question U.S. Supreme Court precedent that has enshrined the right to exclude as an “essential” stick in the bundle of property rights and serves as a powerful alternative to the Court’s formalistic notion of property rights. Given the differences in its history, culture, and legal system, the United States is unlikely to follow Britain’s lead in enacting a right to roam; nevertheless, the study of CRoW contains valuable lessons for Americans.The author wishes to thank the anonymous donor of the Drake International Research Stipend who generously enabled this research

    The KdV Equation on the Half-Line: Time-Periodicity and Mass Transport

    The work presented here emanates from questions arising from experimental observations of the propagation of surface water waves. The experiments in question featured a periodically moving wavemaker located at one end of a flume that generated unidirectional waves of relatively small amplitude and long wavelength when compared with the undisturbed depth. It was observed that the wave profile at any point down the channel very quickly became periodic in time with the same period as that of the wavemaker. One of the questions dealt with here is whether or not such a property holds for model equations for such waves. In the present discussion, this is examined in the context of the Korteweg-de Vries equation using the recently developed version of the inverse scattering theory for boundary-value problems put forward by Fokas and his collaborators. It turns out that solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation generated by periodic forcing at the boundary do exhibit asymptotic temporal periodicity at any fixed point down the channel. However, a more subtle issue to do with conservation of mass fails to hold at the second order in a small parameter, which is the typical wave amplitude divided by the undisturbed depth.</p

    Propagation of long-crested water waves

    30 pagesInternational audienceThe present essay is concerned with a model for the propagation ofthree-dimensional, surface water waves. Of especial interest will be long-crestedwaves such as those sometimes observed in canals and in near-shore zones oflarge bodies of water. Such waves propagate primarily in one direction, taken tobe the x−direction in a Cartesian framework, and variations in the horizontaldirection orthogonal to the primary direction, the y−direction, say, are oftenignored. However, there are situations where weak variations in the secondaryhorizontal direction need to be taken into account.Our results are developed in the context of Boussinesq models, so they areapplicable to waves that have small amplitude and long wavelength when comparedwith the undisturbed depth. Included in the theory are well-posednessresults on the long, Boussinesq time scale. As mentioned, particular interestis paid to the lateral dynamics, which turn out to satisfy a reduced Boussinesqsystem.
