Creative Disobedience: Dorothee Sölle\u27s Political Theology and Ethics for U.S. Christian Contexts
This dissertation adapts Dorothee Sölle’s concept of creative disobedience to account for those histories of obedience to structures of domination and to foster moral agency that disrupts and dismantles structures of domination. The first two chapters contextualize and summarize Dorothee Sölle’s critique of obedience and her warning against the way in which the obedient social character yields a “Christofascist” society. Chapter II considers the extent to which Christofascism already exists in US society today through Andrew L. Whitehead and Samuel L. Perry’s study of the political and cultural prevalence of Christian nationalism. Chapter III contextualizes Dorothee Sölle’s theoretical critique of obedience through Erich Fromm’s concept of social character, Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza’s concept of kyriocentrism. In Chapter III, the author shows how histories and structures forming US white-Christian social character--white supremacy, coloniality and kyriarchy--require white-Christian obedience to the same Christian nationalist structures of power, boundaries and order. Chapter IV summarizes Sölle’s feminist theology which argues that creative disobedience is necessary for Christian moral agency. Finally, Chapter V adapts Sölle’s creative disobedience as an ethical process for progressive white-Christians in the US today. This chapter explains how moral agency defined by creative disobedience would foster habits and practices that lead to effective participation in political transformation, rather than reinforcing relationships and structures of domination
Deixis: Textdeixis
German language is characterized by a frequent use of deictic expressions. Those expressions are used in different types of communicative settings. They also include the text, which may be conceptualized on the one hand as a space and on the other hand as a chronological arrangement of actions. Textdeictic devices belong to the strategies of reader orientation. They are usually embedded in comments of the author on textual organization and include different types of deictic (or paradeictic) expressions, such as demonstrative pronouns and adverbs.

Experiencing untouched nature in the great indoors : on the production of wilderness in Arctic resort enclaves
This chapter unravels the nature–society dichotomy in the context of nature-based tourism. Drawing upon Neil Smith's production of nature thesis, the chapter examines how Arctic-themed resort enclaves in northernmost Sweden, Finland and Norway, as well as Iceland, produce wilderness for international markets. Even though the studied venues evoke imaginaries of pristine wilderness to attract travellers, these touristic environments are a product of globally circulating ideas of Arctic nature coupled with tourism businesses' need to create exchange value. As such, the key characteristic of this wilderness is that locally specific flora and fauna are overlooked in favour of distant landscape sceneries and the skies above. Unlike all other human sensations involving wilderness, the view is the easiest to commodify and is incorporated by the Arctic-themed enclaves into a highly standardised, safe and comfortable accommodation environment. Thus, wilderness is largely confined to an indoor experience in which the visual sensations dominate.</p

Evaluation in tourism planning: An examination of Finland's national, regional and local tourism strategies
Evaluation and performance measurement are established elements in modern public sector governance. These procedures aim at generating information about the merit and worth of policies, programs and strategies in comparison to explicit standards and indicators. Since the late 1960s, evaluation has developed considerably and functions nowadays as means to improve and control public service management, to legitimise political decisions and policy outputs and to ensure democratic enlightenment.
While evaluation is conceptually well recognised inside the strategic tourism planning literature, there has been relatively little empirical investigation of this planning cycle component. This thesis examines therefore the nature of evaluation in Finland’s tourism strategies from a public policy perspective. Empirical materials were collected in 2018 and consist of the current Finnish national, regional and two local tourism strategies in addition to five semi-structured expert interviews.
The qualitative content analysis reveals that Finnish tourism strategies are not evaluated in the conventional sense of policy and program evaluation. Tourism strategies are a product of indicative planning and as such, there is no prescribed procedure of how plans have to be evaluated. Instead, evaluation and monitoring processes of the Finnish tourism strategies are led by internal steering groups. The degree of formalisation and depth of evaluative actions vary across the examined cases and are determined by the organisational culture of the issuing tourism organisation and the leadership of individual planners.
Ex ante evaluation, that seeks to determine appropriateness and effectiveness of the strategy though extensive stakeholder consultation, dominates. Goal-attainment monitoring is undertaken within key stakeholder meetings and only for Finland’s national tourism strategy is a systematic framework for reporting the stage of implementation employed. Central in monitoring is a set of economic indicators that are congruent to the strategic growth objectives in many tourism plans. Thorough ex post evaluation is not well developed. These research results facilitate a deeper understanding of strategic tourism planning processes and the current measurement dimensions of tourism in Finland. The future need for more extensive evaluations is particularly discussed with respect to overtourism and climate change
Skapandet av arktiska geografier : politisk ekonomi, institutionell strategisk selektivitet och aktörskap i turismutvecklingen
Tourism has long been promoted as a catalyst for socio-economic development in sparsely populated areas based on the commodification of culture and natural environments. This thesis examines the case of Arctic tourism in the two neighbouring northern counties of Finnish Lapland and Norrbotten (Sweden). Although characterised by similar resource endowments for tourism, these two regions have historically pursued divergent pathways, leading to different industry characteristics and spatial development outcomes. More recently, Lapland and Norrbotten have witnessed a remarkable increase in Arctic-themed tourism featuring soft nature-based winter activities and resort accommodation for export markets. To better understand the complex factors facilitating the emergence and consolidation of this pathway, a theoretical framework combining perspectives drawn from evolutionary economic geography, geographical political economy, and the strategic relational approach to structure and agency was selected. Through this theoretical lens, the thesis studies how wider politico-economic trajectories, institutional priorities and strategic selectivity, and entrepreneurial agency are intertwined in tourism path creation that takes place in path-dependent regional opportunity spaces. Empirically, the thesis rests upon a case study methodology that integrates expert interviews, document analysis, and spatial mapping of regional development funding for tourism projects and firms. The findings show that the geographical reimagination of Lapland and Norrbotten as Arctic tourism regions is part of wider socio-economic transformations. Export-oriented Arctic tourism is linked to a global political economy promoting economic growth and entrepreneurship, governed by multiscalar public-private networks, as the foundation of sustainable development and social wellbeing. For local places, the alignment with the Arctic represents an upscaling strategy to gain visibility and competitiveness within globalised politico-economic environments. At the regional level, public organisations mediate Arctic tourism pathways inter alia by granting funding and financing for firms and public-private development projects. The institutional strategic selectivity entailed therein privileges commonly established actors and business ideas over new ones, fostering pathway reproduction and the (unintended) continuation of uneven development structures. These opportunity spaces also conditioned the rise of Arctic-themed resort enclave as a distinct tourism product in Lapland and Norrbotten. Although these venues offer potential for new tourism development in previously underdeveloped locations as well as local business cooperation and spinoffs, there remain challenges, not least in relation to their limitations regarding year-round employment and a homogenous market focus implying a boom-and-bust vulnerability. To summarise, the findings of the four papers included in the thesis provide a nuanced picture of the processes that have shaped Arctic tourism in the two case study regions, raising attention to the limits and opportunities of export-oriented tourism for regional development and local communities in sparsely populated areas
