Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here
PMMA-Based Bone Cements and the Problem of Joint Arthroplasty Infections: Status and New Perspectives
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based bone cement is a biomaterial that has been used over the last 50 years to stabilize hip and knee implants or as a bone filler. Although PMMA-based bone cement is widely used and allows a fast-primary fixation to the bone, it does not guarantee a mechanically and biologically stable interface with bone, and most of all it is prone to bacteria adhesion and infection development. In the 1970s, antibiotic-loaded bone cements were introduced to reduce the infection rate in arthroplasty; however, the efficiency of antibiotic-containing bone cement is still a debated issue. For these reasons, in recent years, the scientific community has investigated new approaches to impart antibacterial properties to PMMA bone cement. The aim of this review is to summarize the current status regarding antibiotic-loaded PMMA-based bone cements, fill the gap regarding the lack of data on antibacterial bone cement, and explore the progress of antibacterial bone cement formulations, focusing attention on the new perspectives. In particular, this review highlights the innovative study of composite bone cements containing inorganic antibacterial and bioactive phases, which are a fascinating alternative that can impart both osteointegration and antibacterial properties to PMMA-based bone cement
Tripled semitendinosus with single harvesting is as effective but less invasive compared to standard gracilis-semitendinosus harvesting
Introduction: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with pes anserinus tendons has been increasingly used throughout the last years. Although less invasive compared to other autologous grafts, a reduction of internal rotation and flexion strength after gracilis and semitendinosus harvesting has been reported. Harvesting one tendon instead of two from the pes anserinus can reduce the deficit of the knee flexor strength and improve the functional recover without weakening the reconstructed ligament. Methods: Forty-five (45) patients who had ACL reconstruction with triple semitendinosus graft (ST3) have been compared with other 45 similar patients who had ACL reconstruction with double gracilis-semitendinosus tendons (GST). Patients have been evaluated at a minimum of 12 months after surgery: IKDC scale, KT-1000, One Leg Hop Test for the objective stability; Isokinetic test for the strength; Tegner scale, Lysholm and IKDC subjective evaluation form for the function. Results: No differences have been detected between the groups for the objective item assessed. Male patients' subjective IKDC score was statistically better for the ST3 group. Recreational soccer players showed a higher Lysholm and subjective IKDC score in ST3 group compared to GST group. There was no difference regarding the return to sport. Conclusion: ST3 guarantees the same objective knee stability compared to a GST. It is a viable option for ACL reconstruction that allows a better preservation of patient's anatomy and a less invasive harvesting surgery

Treatment of knee osteoarthritis by intra-articular injection of concentrated autologous adipose tissue: a twenty four month follow-up study
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of autologous concentrated adipose tissue for the treatment of knee OA.
Methods: Eighty-seven patients with knee arthritis from grade 1 to 3, according to Kellgren-Lawrence scale, have been treated with knee arthroscopy and successive intra-articular injection of concentrated adipose tissue. The efficacy of the treatment has been evaluated by the Knee Society Score, Lysholm Score, Forgotten Joint Score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and Noise Reporting Scale.
Results: A total of 78/87 patients concluded the study. Overall, the patients were satisfied with the intervention and a significant reduction of the pain was observed in 67 patients, while the others did not report any change in pain severity or worsening. A statistically significant improvement was observed in the considered orthopaedic index, and no major adverse effects were described. The first week after the intervention, most patients reported knee swelling. Five patients failed because they underwent knee replacement surgery between five and nine months from treatment.
Conclusions: In patients with knee OA, a single intra-articular injection of autologous adipose tissue reduced knee pain, stiffness, improved knee function and quality of life without severe complications
La maturità di Alessandro Fei del Barbiere, in bilico tra Maniera e Riforma
This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci
Regeneration of articular cartilage: Scaffold used in orthopedic surgery. A short handbook of available products for regenerative joints surgery
Introduction: Restoring defects of load-bearing connective tissues such as articular cartilage resulting from traumas, degenerative or age-related diseases remains a significant clinical challenge for clinicians due to the limited inherent repair capacity of articular cartilage. Tissue engineering has emerged as a potential alternative to the traditional surgical techniques, as it can be effectively used to regenerate bone, cartilage and the bone-cartilage interface. Several scaffold strategies have been developed and evaluated for osteochondral defect repair.
Materials and methods: The classes of polymers (scaffold-based proteins, scaffold-base polysaccharides and synthetic scaffolds) and Hydrogels have been reviewed trough literature and market search. The study focused on their respective properties and analyzed advantages and disadvantages of each of them.
Discussion: Clinical studies demonstrated improved cartilage regeneration thanks to the implantation of biomaterials after bone marrow stimulation. New cartilage can be engineered in vivo by transplanting chondrocytes seeded into a three-dimensional scaffold and this novel scaffold has mechanical properties that can be comparable to native cartilage and could be used to repair large osteochondral joints defects. Anyway, there is still space for improvement regarding clinical outcome and tissue quality
Bone Loss in Distal Radial Fractures Treated with A Composite Xenohybrid Bone Substitute: A Two Years Follow-Up Retrospective Study
(1) Background: Recently, surgical treatment of distal radius fractures has increased exponentially. Many locking plates’ fixation systems have been developed allowing a more stable reduction and early mobilization. Sometimes, open reduction and fixation of distal radius fractures may leave a residual bone loss requiring grafting. This retrospective study reports clinical and radiologic outcomes of distal radius fractures treated with xenohybrid bone grafting in order to assess (i) the safety of the investigated bone graft; (ii) its radiological integration and biomechanical performances, and (iii) clinical outcomes of the patients; (2) Methods: We performed a retrospective study on a cohort of 19 patients. Preoperative X-ray and CT scan were performed. The mean clinical and radiographical follow-up was two years. Safety of the xenohybrid bone graft was constantly evaluated. Clinical results were assessed through the DASH score and Mayo wrist score; (3) Results: No adverse reactions, infections, and local or general complication were related to the use of xenohybrid bone graft. The radiolucency of the xenografts suggested progressive osteointegration. No evidence of bone graft resorption was detected. All the patients reached consolidation with good to excellent clinical results; and (4) Conclusions: Clinical and radiological data demonstrated that xenohybrid bone grafting promotes new bone formation and healing in osteopenic areas caused by fracture reduction
