Maintenance in aeronautics in an industry 4.0 context: The role of ar and am
The paper discusses how Industry 4.0 could impact practitioners performing maintenance in aviation. The attention has been on Augmented Reality and Additive Manufacturing, which can support maintenance tasks and spare parts production respectively. Advantages and open issues are widely discussed and couple of case studies dealing with realistic scenarios are presented to support what has been proposed by the authors. The intention is to demonstrate that AR and AM are viable tools in aviation maintenance, even if effort is necessary to develop an appropriate regulatory framework, required before the introduction of these technologies in the maintenance process. Once applied to real maintenance tasks by airline companies, the practitioning community can develop best practices and the necessary regulation pertaining to maintenance and repair of aerospace systems using AR and AM technologies
Transdisciplinary Engineering Research Challenges
Transdisciplinary research (TDR) has been the subject of discourse in the past few decades, but has not been studied much in the context of engineering problems. Many engineering problems can be characterized as ill-defined, like open innovation, adoption of new technology, business development, and the adoption of the Industry 4.0 concept. Transdisciplinary engineering research (TDER) is also performed in large projects by multi-disciplinary teams, as in TDR projects, including stakeholders and people from practice. Such projects may last long, often years. In such large projects, the involved disciplines should include both engineering disciplines as well as disciplines from social sciences. In this paper we address the challenges that exist in adopting a TDER approach. Universities need to prepare students to work in TDER projects. We discuss the current situation in transdisciplinary engineering education (TDEE) and identify challenges that need to be addressed for including TDEE in curricula. The paper ends with a summary and ideas for further research
Transdisciplinary Engineering Methods for Social Innovation of Industry 4.0
The concept of concurrent engineering (CE) was first developed in the 1980s. Now often referred to as transdiciplinary engineering, it is based on the idea that different phases of a product life cycle should be conducted concurrently and initiated as early as possible within the Product Creation Process (PCP). The main goal of CE is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the PCP and reduce errors in later phases, as well as incorporating considerations – including environmental implications – for the full lifecycle of the product. It has become a substantive methodology in many industries, and has also been adopted in the development of new services and service support.
This book presents the proceedings of the 25th ISPE Inc. International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering, held in Modena, Italy, in July 2018. This international conference attracts researchers, industry experts, students, and government representatives interested in recent transdisciplinary engineering research, advancements and applications.
The book contains 120 peer-reviewed papers, selected from 259 submissions from all continents of the world, ranging from the theoretical and conceptual to papers addressing industrial best practice, and is divided into 11 sections reflecting the themes addressed in the conference program and addressing topics as diverse as industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing; human-centered design; modeling, simulation and virtual design; and knowledge and data management among others.
With an overview of the latest research results, product creation processes and related methodologies, this book will be of interest to researchers, design practitioners and educators alike
Preliminary fuselage structural configuration of a flying-wing type airline
The flying-wing is a type of configuration which is a tailless airplane accommodating all of its parts within the outline of a single airfoil. Theoretically, it has the most aerodynamic efficiency. The fuel consumption can be more efficient than the existed conventional airliner. It seems that this configuration can achieve the above mentioned requirements.
According to these outstanding advantages, many aircraft companies did a great deal of projects on the flying-wing concept. However, the application was only for sport and military use; for airliner, none of them entered production.
FW-11 is a flying-wing configuration airliner which is a design cooperation between Cranfield University and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). Aiming the spatial economic and environmental needs, this 200-seat airliner would attract attention from airline companies for cost saving and environmental protection.
Before start, this program is designated for a new generation commercial aircraft to compete with the existing same capability airliner, such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 767. As the first team of this program, the aim is to finish the conceptual design and prepare the relevant document for next two teams that will perform preliminary and detail design.
As a member of FW-11 program and as part of the GDP, the author has been through the four conceptual design stages: engine manufacturers, aircraft family issues, structure design and the establishment of 3-D CAD model.

Silêncio e (des)solução em Cartas a Posêidon de Cees Nooteboom
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2015.É a partir do abandono dos deuses em Cartas a Posêidon (2012), do escritor Cees Nooteboom, que a presente dissertação busca refletir sobre a criação de uma imagem poética do estatuto do homem nos dias atuais, cujo enfoque reside nas inúmeras descontinuidades e rupturas presentes no texto de escritor neerlandês. Através da Carta sobre o humanismo, de Martin Heidegger, e Regras para o parque humano, de Peter Sloterdijk, o trabalho propõe uma breve discussão sobre a epístola enquanto ferramenta humanista e, no caso de Nooteboom, a sua inabilidade em fazer amigos, resultado da disrupção do dialogismo pelo insistente silêncio divino. Utilizando-se do conceito de Stimmung e os estudos de Leo Spitzer e Hans Gumbrecht sobre o tema, a dissertação procura observar a criação de determinadas atmosferas ao longo do texto, cuja essência nega o significado original do termo Stimmung enquanto harmonia. Por intermédio do pensamento de Jean-Luc Nancy acerca do mito e a sua base atual como negação de sua fundação original, o trabalho busca pensar a inoperância da carta como espaço de proliferação da narrativa. Valendo-se de A Comunidade Inconfessável, de Maurice Blanchot, a formação da comunidade tem como base a sua própria ausência em um movimento contínuo aqui proposto como (des)solução. Por fim, através da contribuição de Susan Sontag em ?Estética do silêncio?, a dissertação propõe uma comparação dos fragmentos de Nooteboom com a pintura neerlandesa do século XVII, o Stilleven, e a sua natureza silente e imóvel que em Nooteboom culminam em tremor, ruído.Abstract : It is from the abandonment of the gods in Letters to Poseidon (2012), of the writer Cees Nooteboom, that this study tries to reflect on the creation of a poetic image of the status of man nowadays whose focus lies in the many discontinuities and breaks in the text the Dutch author. By Letter on Humanism, from Martin Heidegger, and Rules for the human zoo, by Peter Sloterdijk, the work proposes a brief discussion of the epistle as humanistic tool and, in the case of Nooteboom, its inability to make friends as a result of disruption of dialogism by the insistent divine silence. Using the concept of Stimmung and studies of Leo Spitzer and Hans Gumbrecht on the subject, the dissertation tries to observe the creation of specific atmospheres throughout the text, whose essence denies the original meaning of the term Stimmung as harmony. Through the thought of Jean-Luc Nancy about the myth and its current base as denial of its original foundation, the work aims to rethink the ineffectiveness of communication as the narrative space proliferation and the formation of a community, drawing on The Unavowable Community, from Maurice Blanchot, whose base lies in its very absence, in continuous motion proposed here as (dis)solution. Finally, through the contribution of Susan Sontag in "Aesthetics of Silence", the study proposes a comparison of Nooteboom fragments with the Dutch painting of the seventeenth century, Stilleven, and its silent and motionless nature that in Nooteboom culminates into tremor, noise
Frugal innovation: Some theoretical observations from innovation-economic and social-entrepreneurial perspectives
This chapter’s aims to link frugal innovation (FI) to some theoretical notions. First, it presents a brief overview of what FI is in order to identify characteristics that can be linked to theoretical notions. Second it links the concept of FI to 1) existing theoretical notions on profit-induced innovators and how these contribute to economic development and transformation, and 2) a conceptual way of thinking based on social entrepreneurs and their motives and opportunities to overcome resource constraint by designing and developing frugal innovation. Two takeaways on furthering theoretical attempts to understand frugal innovations are presented. The first one is working out of Comprehensive Schumpeterian models where dynamic patterns of polycentric innovation networks can be examined thoroughly. Identification of Strategic Maintenance
Airline Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) organizations face accidental damages on their fleet of aircraft as part of daily practice. As this type of damage is stochastic in nature, the approach towards repairing accidental damage is reactive in practice. However, it is possible to predict future long-term (strategic) demand for maintenance resources associated with accidental damages and use this to identify required capacity. To achieve the mutually related goals of prediction of future repairs and determination of capacity, a novel approach for integration of reliability modelling and inventory control is presented in this paper. Here, the concept of inventory control has been specifically applied to determine the maintenance capacity by taking into account the stochastic demand related to unscheduled repairs following from accidental damages. To predict demand, a Non-homogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP) reliability model has been adopted. The reliability model includes superpositioning, through which failure behaviour at aircraft fleet-level can be estimated and subsequently simulated. The resulting demand is fed into a single-system, single location base-stock inventory model. This allows for determination of strategic capacity based on optimum costs as well as service level requirements. A case study has been performed on a fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft of a major European airline. The results prove the feasibility of adopting an integrated approach towards strategic capacity identification, using real-life data to predict future demand occurrence.Air Transport & Operation
Transdisciplinary systems engineering: Implications, challenges and research agenda
Transdisciplinary processes have been the subject of research since several decades already. Transdisciplinary processes are aimed at solving ill-defined and socially relevant problems. Many researchers have studied transdisciplinary processes and have tried to understand the essentials of transdisciplinarity. Many engineering problems can be characterised as ill-defined and socially relevant, too. Although transdisciplinary engineering cannot widely be found in the literature yet, a transdisciplinary approach is deemed relevant for many engineering problems. With this paper we aim to present an overview of the literature on research into transdisciplinary processes and investigate the relevance of a transdisciplinary approach in engineering domains. After a brief description of past research on transdisciplinarity, implications for engineering research, engineering practice, and engineering education are identified. In all three areas, the current situation is described, while challenges are identified that still exist. The paper ends with a research agenda for transdisciplinary engineering
