A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

Filippo FIMIANI, Occhi pieni e mani vaganti. Movimenti, emozioni, astrazioni, «Fata Morgana», 12/2010, pp. 147-164. ISSN 1970-5786. ITALIANO. A short filmic example from the AMC's award-winning series Mad Men in which the sensorial and emotional relationship between the spectator and a moving body, i.e., a dancing body, is explicitly put into play. The essay wants to deal with the so called naturalization of phenomenology and of the living body, trained by the cognitive sciences reading the visuality. The author shows the relationship between the so called ‘embodied Simulation’ and a symbolic and iconographic deep memory of the pictures, and he gives an in-depth attention to the polarity between projections and introjections, activity and passivity of the spectator’s body during the empathic experience of the moving pictures

This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of political geography within the context of the journal Political Geography. The author, who has held various editorial positions within the journal, navigates the intricate terrain of diversity and inclusion, exploring the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural biases inherent in academic publishing. The chapter critically examines efforts to mitigate barriers and broaden the scope of political geography, questioning the adequacy of current approaches. Through a reflective analysis, the author elucidates the complex dynamics of political geography as a subdiscipline, shedding light on both the impediments and possibilities it offers to researchers and students

Supplemented Low-Protein Diet and Once-Weekly Hemodialysis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the nutritional and depurative adequacy of the integrated diet dialysis program. The integrated diet dialysis program consists of a low-protein diet (0.4 g/kg ideal body weight/d), supplemented with essential amino acids or a mixture of essential amino acids and chetoanalogues, and onceweekly hemodialysis, tailored to maintain predialytic blood urea nitrogen levels lower than 90 mg/dL. Sixty-nine of 84 recruited patients with a mean age of 62.9 ± (SD) 11.1 years and a baseline glomerular filtration rate of 2.54 ± 0.94 mL/min entered the experimental phase; 15 dropped out, eight because of poor diet compliance. At 12-month followup, patient and technique survival were, respectively, 89% and 56%. The laboratory, anthropometric, and instrumental parameters of 28 patients with a follow-up of more than 12 months were also evaluated using repeated measures ANOVA. Mean predialytic blood urea nitrogen values were not significantly different (82 ± 21 mg/dL v 93 ± 26 mg/dL at baseline and after 12-month follow-up, respectively); total weekly KT/V from residual renal function plus dialysis (1.64 ± 0.32 v 1.70 ± 0.29; P = NS) and dialytic index according to Babb and Scribner (1.35 ± 0.31 v 1.21 ± 0.33) were stable. No problems were found as far as acid-base, calcium phosphate, water-electrolyte metabolism and blood pressure control are concerned. Body weight, fat free mass, fat, plasma proteins, albumin, and C3 and C4 complement factors were stable. Creatinine production (sum of metabolized plus excreted creatinine) decreased (14.3 ± 3.2 mg/kg/d v 13.4 ± 2.6 mg/kg/d; P < 0.05). Transferrin decreased but not significantly (221 ± 46 mg/dL v 204 ± 42 mg/dL; P < 0.09). Distal motor conduction velocity from the posterior tibia) nerve did not improve during the study (37.8 ± 4.9 m/s v 36.4 ± 4.9 m/s), while distal motor conduction velocity from the median nerve worsened (50.8 ± 4.3 m/s v 46.3 ± 6.3 m/s; P < 0.05). In conclusion, even though the integrated diet dialysis program may be very important in the psychologically delicate phase between the conservative and the classical three-times-a-week hemodialysis programs, and may also solve some economic and dialytically related organizational problems, it arouses some concern as far as compliance and long-term nutritional and depurative adequacy are concerned. It should therefore be limited to highly motivated patients in centers with well-trained staff or where dialysis facilities are lacking. © 1994, National Kidney Foundation. All rights reserved. Cylindrical layered bone scaffolds with anisotropic mechanical properties as potential drug delivery systems

    No full text
3D cylindrical layered scaffolds with anisotropic mechanical properties were prepared according to a new and simple method, which involves gelatin foaming, deposition of foamed strips, in situ crosslinking, strip rolling and lyophilization. Different genipin concentrations were tested in order to obtain strips with different crosslinking degrees and a tunable stability in biological environment. Before lyophilization, the strips were curled in a concentric structure to generate anisotropic spiral-cylindrical scaffolds. The scaffolds displayed significantly higher values of stress at break and of the Young modulus in compression along the longitudinal than the transverse direction. Further improvement of the mechanical properties was achieved by adding strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) to the scaffold composition and by increasing genipin concentration. Moreover, composition modulated also water uptake ability and degradation behavior. The scaffolds showed a sustained strontium release, suggesting possible applications for the local treatment of abnormally high bone resorption. This study demonstrates that assembly of layers of different composition can be used as a tool to obtain scaffolds with modulated properties, which can be loaded with drugs or biologically active molecules providing properties tailored upon the needs
