A Mixed Statistical and Machine Learning Approach for the Analysis of Multimodal Trail Making Test Data
Eye-tracking can offer a novel clinical practice and a non-invasive tool to detect neuropathological syndromes. In this paper, we show some analysis on data obtained from the visual sequential search test. Indeed, such a test can be used to evaluate the capacity of looking at objects in a specific order, and its successful execution requires the optimization of the perceptual resources of foveal and extrafoveal vision. The main objective of this work is to detect if some patterns can be found within the data, to discern among people with chronic pain, extrapyramidal patients and healthy controls. We employed statistical tests to evaluate differences among groups, considering three novel indicators: blinking rate, average blinking duration and maximum pupil size variation. Additionally, to divide the three patient groups based on scan-path images—which appear very noisy and all similar to each other—we applied deep learning techniques to embed them into a larger transformed space. We then applied a clustering approach to correctly detect and classify the three cohorts. Preliminary experiments show promising results
Internet incidence on SME's sales: A propensity score matching analysis
The purpose of this paper is to determine how much is the bonus or prize to the sales per worker of Internet-using firms compared to not Internet-using firms. The author employs matching techniques based on an Argentinean database. The author first presents a binary logit model, in which the dependent variable is a dichotomous variable equal to 1 if the firm adopted Internet and 0 otherwise, to evaluate the factors that influence a firm?s probability of adopting Internet. A propensity score matching (PSM) model is then used to assess the impact of using Internet on the sales per worker. The author finds statically significant differences in the sales average between firms that are similar in many dimensions such as location, size, and sales market except for the Internet adoption decision. By probing that Internet access improves SME's sales, the author is validating the Public Sector ICT modernization programs for SME. The contribution of this paper consists of using a well known technique as PSM to analyze a recent field of research which is the contribution of Internet adoption to the firm's sales per worker.Fil: Alderete, Maria Veronica. The strategy of flight: problematizing the figure of trafficking
The article criticizes the way in which the perspective of trafficking employs the label of “slave labor” in Argentine to refer to migrant workers in textile workshops. This label constructs the figure of the migrant as the perfect victim and moralizes migrants’ action, while legitimizing the inexorably paternalistic work of NGOs, funding streams, and rhetoric. To critique such a perspective, the author makes two counterpoints. On the one hand, she seeks to counter the figure of trafficking with that of the autonomy of migration, understanding autonomy from a point of view that brings together a focus on the desire to travel and on expectations of popular progress with an analysis of contemporary dynamics of exploitation. On the other hand, she investigates the infrastructure and logistics that organize mobility beyond the reference to the figures of “traffickers” and “slaves,” generalized by the allencompassing narrative of human trafficking. The text rather inscribes these logistics of mobility within spatial dynamics that are connected to the development of popular economies in Latin American metropolises, which are fundamentally sustained and energized by migration.Fil: Gago, Maria Veronica. An Analysis on Health Care Costs Due to Accidents Involving Powered Two Wheelers to Increase Road Safety
AbstractPowered Two Wheelers (PTWs) provide a convenient mode for a large portion of population in many cities. At the same time PTWs present serious system problems, the most important being poorer safety if compared to other motorized modes. But even when lower safety levels are acknowledged, problems behind are far from being solved. Rome is an example: although PTWs accidents rates are not negligible, the need for a specific safety policy is still unmet. Therefore the local Mobility Agency appointed the authors of this paper for a study of PTWs accidents occurring in the urban area. An assessment of the associated health care costs was also required. The objective of the paper is to report the main outcomes of this study highlighting recurring features of PTWs accidents, the high health care costs and how to quantify the economic resources to improve safety. The methodology was based on three steps: i) an analysis of the causes of PTWs accidents, which resulted into the location of black spots and assessment of the severity of the events; ii) the estimation of health care costs after a scientific literature review; iii) the association of health care costs to black spots and accidents severity to rank interventions to improve PTWs safety. This led to a final list of roads where PTWs accidents of the highest severity occurred and the required economic resources to improve their safety level. This stressed, for the first time, the unaffordable expenditures due to PTWs accidents. In conclusion, the issue whether the awareness of such costs can be used as leverage for more mindful behaviors among the riders is addressed
Memória e invenção em Os anões, de Veronica Stigger
This research aims to analyze the piece of work Os anões (2010) by Veronica Stigger, writer of contemporary brazilian literature, seeking to discuss the relationships between memory and invention that cross the narratives chosen to compose the corpus of the work. Her literary production is offered here as an object of study that challenges the boundaries between literary and non-literary genres, reality and fiction, writing and life, and takes place in a mostly autonomous universe. In this perspective, the texts “Imagem verdadeira”, “200 m²”, “Poet Drummond Flat Service” and “Tatuagem” were chosen, considering procedures linked to memory, writing and fictional autobiography. As a theoretical-methodological foundation, studies of literary theory and criticism were selected, in dialogue with texts dealing with literature, memory and writing in contemporary times, in addition to the critical fortune of the author and the work studied. From that, the frequent dialogical resumption of a vast memory of texts and urban elements in the researched book stands out, as well as the relationship of reciprocity between invention and memory and the exploration of the limits between biography and fiction, in Veronica Stigger's work, as attitudes that reflect the characteristics of the contemporary literature.
Clinical outcome of chronic myeloid leukemia imatinib-resistant patients: do BCR–ABL kinase domain mutations affect patient survival? First multicenter Argentinean study
In imatinib-treated patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), BCRABL mutations are the most common mechanism of resistance. Here we report the first multicenter Argentinean study investigating mutations in those patients with CML who fail or lose response to imatinib, with or without previous interferon treatment. Point mutations were detected in 36 of 154 patients by direct sequencing. In our series, the single most common mutations were G250E, E255K/V, and M351T. The presence of mutations correlated significantly with accelerated phase, lack of molecular response, and lower cytogenetic and hematological responses. While overall survival did not differ between patients with or without mutations, the probability of progression was higher in patients with mutations. Cases with non-P-loop mutations showed a significantly better overall survival from diagnosis. Multivariate analysis showed that the most significant variables related to the development of mutations were accelerated phase, duration of imatinib treatment, and time delay to starting imatinib. Our results demonstrated that mutation frequency increased with the progression of disease, and suggest that imatinib treatment should be started early.Fil: Bengió, Raquel M..
