Constructing indicators from patent specifications: What they reveal and what they imply?
The study distinguishes some of the rich sources of information that can be extracted from a patent document and can act as an indicator to measure some of the technological features of patenting activity of a firm/country. The paper attempts to highlight this through empirical examination of patents granted to Indian institutions in the US. The applicability of the indicators that are distinguished and meaning they can convey are addressed in this study
Pharmacogenomic and mechanistic studies on dietary factors in chemoprevention of cancer
Pharmacogenomic profiling of cancer has recently seen much activity with the accessibility of the newest generation of high-throughput platforms and technologies. A myriad of mechanistic studies have been devoted to identifying dietary factors that can help prevent cancer, with evidence gleaned from epidemiologic studies revealing an inverse correlation between the intake of cruciferous vegetables and the risk of certain types of cancer. To develop a comprehensive understanding of cancer pathogenesis, and potential for chemopreventive intervention with dietary factors, an integrated approach that encompasses both pharmacogenomic and mechanistic aspects is desirable. Our transcriptomic profiling of butylated hydroxyanisole-induced Nuclear Factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent genes in Nrf2-deficient mice identified several germane molecular targets for prevention. Toxicogenomic analyses of endoplasmic reticulum stress inducer tunicamycin in Nrf2-deficient mice elucidated Nrf2-regulated unfolded protein response effects. Mechanistic studies on a combination of sulforaphane and (-) epigallocatechin-3-gallate in HT-29 AP-1 (Activator Protein-1) cells revealed a synergy in colon cancer chemoprevention. Pharmacogenomic studies of this combination in PC-3 AP-1 cells provided a discursive framework for understanding putative crosstalk between Nrf2 and AP-1 in prostate cancer chemoprevention. Regulatory potential for concerted modulation of Nrf2 and Nuclear Factor-κB (Nfκb1) in inflammation and carcinogenesis was delineated by bioinformatic analyses. Metabolomic approaches identified potential prognostic biomarkers in human prostate cancer. Differential biological networks in prostate cancer were elicited in androgen-dependent 22Rv1 cells, androgen- and estrogen-dependent LNCaP cells and androgen-independent DU 145 and PC-3 cells. Taken together, our identification of Nrf2-regulated molecular targets by expression profiling using dietary factors, synergistic effects in combinatorial use of dietary factors in colon cancer, regulatory studies on crosstalk between Nrf2 and AP-1 in prostate cancer, bioinformatic analyses of concerted modulation of Nrf2 and Nfkb1 in inflammation and carcinogenesis, metabolomic identification of biomarkers, and delineation of target hubs in differential prostate cancer biological networks, greatly enhance our understanding of the transcriptional circuitry in cancer and important master regulatory nodes including Nrf2 that might potentially be exploited for chemopreventive intervention with dietary factors.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 311-331)

Interaction Design Patterns for Social Robot Assistance of Moral Decisions in Healthcare: Confrontation with Resuscitation Dilemmas
The implementation of social robots in the healthcare industry is becoming substantial as a consequence of the scarcity of healthcare professionals, rising costs of healthcare and an increase in the number of vulnerable populations. Social robots will be deployed, in increasing numbers, in assisting health care professionals during the provision of care to patients. While research in Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI) has investigated mechanisms for making decisions taken by artificial agents more ethical, there is limited work done in investigating adaptations to HRI that promotes ethical behaviour on the human-side. Moral dilemmas can appear when decisions have to be made regarding patientcare. Dealing with them can be challenging for healthcare professionals since the impact of decisions affect multiple parties and involves different considerations and value-trade-offs of the involved people. There are different approaches in which healthcare professionals can be confronted with moral dilemmas. Based on decision making principles, a robot might assist the health care professionals in ethical decision making with an appropriate reflection or confrontation of the dilemma. This thesis investigates how a social robot can confront a professional with a moral dilemma and what the associated effects are. Following the Socio-Cognitive Engineering (SCE) method, two alternative proto-patterns are created for dilemma confrontation by a robot in a resuscitation scenario: Verbal and Multi-modal confrontation. In such a scenario, the robot displays protests of distress and affect in order to help the professionals carry out systematic reflection of the moral dilemmas they experience. In an evaluation, it is tested whether these confrontation patterns are being perceived as intended, comparing the two confrontation patterns with a neutral scenario.Computer Science | Data Science and Technolog

Sport Sector and its Sources of Sustainable Competitive Advantage
It is understood by the author of this paper that national competitiveness consists of competitiveness of all kind of sectors and industries included into them. An industry in return has its members striving to obtain and mantain a competitve advantage for as long as possible. Identification and efficient and effective utilization of unique resources and core competencies has to be ensured along with alignment of performance of sectors in the national economy. The paper is tending to provide a comparative assessment of the sport sector in four out of five main areas: – Sponsorship activities and processes – Gate revenue development – Media rigts and opportunities – Merchandising intellectual property Although food concessions are important fifth area we omitt them for later research to comply with the challenge of in-depth analysis of four above listed area development trends and major key challenges for making sport sector an even more substantial contributor to national competitiveness and international sport and leisure process improvement efforts. Data will be provided to demonstrate the key challenges and trends to be taken into consideration by any sport organization willing successfully identify how to reach appropriate competitiveness expectations formulated by its stakeholders. It is understood by the author of this paper that national competition consists of competitiveness of all kinds of sectors and industries within them. Constitutional Change in the 21st Century: A New Debate over the Spending Power
The author offers his views on the future of the federal spending power debate in Canada. First, he explores the original purposes of Canada's 19th century federal constitution and its evolution in the evolution in the 20th century in response to a changed sense of what a modern state should be and Canada's place in the world. He contends that the debates over the federal spending power grow out of the friction between Canada 19th century political constitution and its 20th century fiscal constitution. Turning to the 21st century, the author posits that demographic shifts will drive future debates about the federal spending power. These shifts will bring political representation to the fore and raise issues about the appropriate role of federal spending on economic and social policy.</p

The Enforcement of the Canada Health Act
The commitment to comprehensive and universal health care, as reflected in the Canada Health Act (CHA), is often regarded as a defining characteristic of our country. Today, Medicare in Canada faces a number of challenges which pose a serious threat to its survival. Overlooked in the political debate about the future of Medicare has been the potential to achieve social justice through the existing statutory framework of the Act. The author examines whether the basic criteria laid down in the CHA are capable of giving rise to legal liability and proposes a legal strategy for enforcing the terms of the Act. To this end, the feasibility of a legal claim against both federal and provincial governments is examined in turn. The author discusses the many hurdles that must be overcome in order for an individual to successfully bring a claim against the government. The author concludes that the CHA can function as both a political and a legal document. In terms of legally enforcing the CHA's criteria, liability is likely to be restricted to the federal government, since the Act is probably not enforceable against the provinces. A successful claim would have the effect of inducing greater vigilance with respect to meeting the criteria of the CHA. Ultimately, however, it is argued that regardless of whether an individual legal claim is successful, it is the political value of litigation that could make a challenge worthwhile. The result of such litigation would be to raise public awareness of the challenges facing Medicare and, thus, lead to political change. In this way, the CHA can serve a dual purpose and prove to be an effective tool for ensuring the integrity of the Medicare system.</p
