Our experience in the treatment of rotator cuff tears in the ederly patients by a infiltrative and rehabilitative treatment C. Costantino, S. Olvirri, R. Ciraulo, E. Marangio. Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Postgraduated School , University of Parma, Italy Introduction. Rotator cuff tears are cause of disability in elderly patients. The gold standard treatment is surgery. In selected cases several authors recommended the use of intraarticular infiltration of ialuronic acid in association by a rehabilitative program. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of rehabilitative and infiltrative treatment with hyaluronic acid in elderly patients with rotator cuff tears, who do not present indications for a surgical intervention or were unwilling to do it. Materials and methods. We have selected 18 patients, (10 men and 8 women), in a range of 70 and 85 years (on average age 77.5 years) with a partial rupture of the rotator cuff showed by ultrasound and / or RMN. All patients showed symptoms like sharp pain, loss of range of motion of the shoulder and loss of autonomy in daily life activities. Each patient has been evalued as far as pain by the Visual Analogic Scale (V.A.S.); and by Constant Murley and Shoulder Rating Questionnaire for functional limitation and independence in daily life activities. We performed a series of three intra-articular infiltration of hyaluronic acid ( molecular weight between 800 and 1200 Kdalton ) followed by a focused.rehabilitation program. Results. The results achieved have been very encouraging since the statistic evaluation showed a great success (p<0,0005) and therefore an improvement of the parameters considered. The protocol we have here shown has been appreciated by all patients who have been satisfied. Conclusion. The infiltrativerehabilitative treatment practiced for these selected cases showed a certain efficacy. The action on pain it’s been possible due to the improvement of the range of motion and the functionality of the shoulder. It may be considered a valid choice instead of a surgical treatment, that is at the moment the gold standard in classic cases of rupture of rotator cuff. However we believe we have to increase our survey . We are planning further follow-up (at 12th month) so as to compare this treatment with others already considered valid in literatu

This thesis describes several scientific contributions, in which some human safety-oriented controls are identify and treated in industrial context where human and robot collaborate. The goal is to maximize the robot performance while Fulfilling to ISO/TS 15066 Regulations. Then, industrial use casesare describes. The main control algorithms treated follows the human-robot interaction modes "Power and Force Limiting" and "Manual Guidance", which ISO/TS 15066 regulates. Finally, in a urban context where human and robot interacts for automatize the door to door urban waste collection, a robotic system for automated picking of urban waste desing and realization use case is described

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a wireless technology for exchanging data, over short distances, designed for the Internet-of-Things era. As widely supported by wearable devices, BLE has the potential to become an alternative for indoor-localization and proximity sensing. The aim of this work was to perform a thorough characterization of the RSSI-distance relationship under controlled conditions using two BLE devices. Four calibration models underwent to a comparative evaluation analysis. The best results were obtained using a polynomial model with a mean distance percentage error equal to 25.7% (0.4 m) in the range 0-3 m. An overall improvement of 14.3% (0.24 m) in the distance estimate compared to the exponential model commonly adopted in the literature was reported

A proximity sensor for the measurement of the inter-foot distance in static and dynamic tasks

Measuring the base of support is of paramount importance in determining human stability during gait or balance tests. While wearable inertial sensors have been successfully employed to quantify numerous gait parameters (velocity, stride length, etc), they could not be used to estimate quantities related to the feet relative position. Thus, alternative technological solutions need to be investigated. Some attempts have been made by combining light intensity infrared or ultrasounds sensors with inertial measurement units. Lately, the Infrared Time-of-Flight technology (IR-ToF) has become popular for measuring distances. IR-ToF sensor measures the time an electromagnetic wave needs to travel a distance. The aim of this work was to investigate the feasibility of the use of an IR-ToF sensor for estimating the inter-foot distance (IFD) in both static and dynamic tasks. Very accurate IFD estimates were obtained during Static (MAE%=3.3%) and Oscillation (MAE%=4.1%) conditions, while larger errors during Gait trials (MAE%=19.8%)

Insights into the Substrate Promiscuity of Novel Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenases

Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (HSDHs) are valuable biocatalysts for the regio- and stereoselective modification of steroids, bile acids and other steroid derivatives. In this work, we investigated the substrate promiscuity of this highly selective class of enzymes. In order to reach this goal, a preliminary search of HSDH homologues in in-house or public available (meta)genomes was carried out. Eight novel NAD(H)-dependent HSDHs, showing either 7α-, 7β-, or 12α-HSDH activity, and including, for the first time, enzymes from extremophilic microorganisms, were identified, recombinantly produced, and characterized. Among the novel HSDHs, four highly active (up to 92 U mg−1) NAD(H)-dependent 7β-HSDHs showing negligible similarity towards previously described 7β-HSDHs, were discovered. These enzymes, along with previously characterized HSDHs, were tested as biocatalysts for the stereoselective reduction of a panel of substrates including two α-ketoesters of pharmaceutical interest and selected ketones that partially resemble the structural features of steroids. All the reactions were coupled with a suitable cofactor regeneration system. Regarding the α-ketoesters, nearly all of the tested HSDHs showed a good activity toward the selected substrates, yielding the reduced α-hydroxyester with up to 99% conversions and enantiomeric excesses. On the other hand, only the 7β-HSDHs from Collinsella aerofaciens and Clostridium absonum showed appreciable activity toward more complex ketones, i. e., (±)-trans-1-decalone, but with interesting as well as different selectivity. (Figure presented.)

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
