The game with tradition in dramatic work of Hrotsvit of Gandersheim
Wydział Filologii Polskiej i KlasycznejRozprawa dotyczy analizy i interpretacji dramatycznej twórczości Hroswity z Gandersheim, kanoniczki, żyjącej w X wieku w Saksonii, w kontekście imitatio lub aemulatio. The dissertation concerns the analysis and interpretation of the dramatic work of Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, canoness who lived in the tenth century in Saxony, in the context of imitatio or aemulatio. Six dramas created approximately around 965, testify to the novelty of the author, at the same time conducting a dialogue with the tradition. Based on the analysis of texts, not only the knowledge of the theoretical theatre doctrine of the writer but also masterpieces of eminent artists of antiquity and early Middle Ages might be concluded. In her works, the influence of both Roman drama, represented mostly by Terence, as well as the Bible and scholastic works is noticed. The overriding aim of the dissertation was a multi-faceted look on at the studied texts and demonstrating the ability to connect the past with the present on many levels: structure, plot, language. The first part of the work contains considerations regarding the literary program of Hrotsvit and theatricality of her works, as well as comparison dramas with their hagiographic patterns. The second part focuses on the parallel of her texts with not only work of an ancient comedian but also with other ancient creators and early Middle Ages in terms of motifs. The third part focuses on the analysis of language, including: vocabulary, syntax, and the usage of rhetorical devices. The considerations were complemented by attempts to familiarize readers two historical works of Hrotsvit and reconstruct the model of educated woman who lived in the tenth century. Studies have shown that Hrotsvit from Gandersheim used the resources widely and creatively modified them in line with aemulatio principle
Poems in the medieval chronicles and the sender’s communicative strategy
Medieval chronicles often contain some included poems according to principles of varietas. It
is consider worthy, why they are located in precise defined particular places. Probably medieval
poetics can deliver an answer. Unfortunately rhetorical rules and terms are often not fully exhaustive
and do not clarify all poems occurrences. In some cases the dramatic text organization can
explain using of particular poetical sequences. They serve as a commentary or an enrichment of
used argumentation. A different situation is related to bigger dramatically organized text passages,
which should be consider as a closed drama. A splendid example can be found in Chronica Polonorum
written by Master Vincentius (Kadłubek). In this case a relationship between drama, theatre
and rhetoric should be carefully examined. The paper deals with inner organization of poems in medieval chronicles. The author examines various arts
and registers of their. He also tries formulating a thesis of poem’s potentially dramatic organization.XXII/1125134
Justice and its Intertextual and Intermedial Relationships in Work of Master Vincentius
The aim of present paper is a closer analyze of some textual construction which are imitating a legal action at court. The scene of imagined court were popular in medieval dramaturgy, they are often used as a plot for scenic action. A particular case was created by Master Vincentius (12th Cent.): a passage from chronicle which presents a possible staging of court action. The aim of present paper is a closer analyze of some textual construction which are imitating a legal action at court. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Epistemological and ethical topics in Old-Polish reflection on the rhetoric and poetry at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Selected problems
Wydział Filologii Polskiej i KlasycznejRozprawa doktorska jest propozycją ujęcia filozoficznych aspektów staropolskiej refleksji metaliterackiej na przełomie XVI i XVII wieku: wątków poznawczych i etycznych. Analiza tekstów źródłowych prowadzi do wyodrębnienia i opisania nadrzędnych idei tej refleksji – konweniencji i „dotknięcia rzeczy”. Idee te stanowią myślowe dominanty, istotne i trwałe w staropolskiej świadomości teoretycznoliterackiej: są fundamentem epistemologicznej i etycznej refleksji o retoryce i poezji, tworzą nadrzędną zasadę ładu i zgodności, decydującą o kształcie estetycznym dzieł literackich, o ich skuteczności komunikacyjnej i oddziaływaniu ideowym. Idee te określają teoretyczne ramy poznawczych i moralnych powinności sztuki słowa. Rozdziały I i II poświęcone są statusowi retoryki i poetyki w Polsce w drugiej połowie XVI wieku oraz teoretycznemu modelowi retoryki. Rozdział III przynosi analizę pism teoretycznoliterackich z przełomu XVI i XVII wieku. To dzieła trzech polskich teoretyków: Przydatki do „Polityki” Arystotelesowej i Przydatki do „Etyki” Arystotelesowej Sebastiana Petrycego z Pilzna, traktat Systema rhetoricae Bartłomieja Keckermanna, dwie prace Macieja Kazimierza Sarbiewskiego Characteres lyrici i De figuris sententiarum. Idee konweniencji i „dotknięcia rzeczy” służą wyjaśnianiu roli retoryki w budowaniu ładu życia społecznego oraz istoty retorycznego i poetyckiego poznania i działania. The doctoral dissertation tends to analyse philosophical aspects of the Old Polish literary metareflection at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: all the cognitive and ethical topics. The analysis of source-based texts concentrates on question, which are the superior ideas of this reflection. These superior ideas: the idea of convenientia (agreement) and the idea of “touching things”, are both essential thought-features, significant and permanent in the Old Polish literary theory: they are the foundation of epistemological and ethical reflections on rhetoric and poetry, create a superior principle of harmony and order: determining factors of literary aesthetic. These ideas also take a decision about communication effectiveness and ideological influence of literary works: they define the theoretical frameworks of cognitive and moral obligations in literature. Chapters I and II are about the status of rhetoric and poetics in Poland in the second half of the sixteenth century, and about the theoretical model of rhetoric. Chapter III brings an analysis of the theoretical works of three Polish theorists at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: Appendages to the “Politics” of Aristotle and Appendages to the “Ethics” of Aristotle of Sebastian Petrycy, the treaty Systema rhetoricae of Bartholomew Keckermann, two treaties Characteres lyrici and De figuris sententiarum of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski. Ideas convenientia and " touching things " explain the role of rhetoric in building the harmony of social life and explain the essence of rhetorical and poetic cognition and action. Chapter IV is about the post-renaissance paradigm of the rhetoric and poetics. It represents the essential and philosophical presentation of literature in the former theoretical reflections and the definition of man as a rhetorical being
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Czy „kroniki” Aleksandra Gwagnina są kroniką?
The main aim of present paper is an analyze of a genre status of Aleksander Gwagnin’s literary output. The writer did not use a word “chronicle” in an original Latin version, but it is present in Polish translation. Marcin Paszkowski decided to insert it in his Polish translation. Due to the rather obscure circumstances, it is necessary to cope with a genre status of work. A comparison Gwagnin’s work with other historiographical forms coming from early epochs could offer some additional arguments for further analyze. Unfortunately, the results are unequivocal. A lack of Gwagnin’s literary skills is striking. His work presents rather a poor aesthetic value. Although the author reached for many historical works, he did not analyze his sources in depth. He probably did not intend to write a scientific report. On contrary, he created a colorful and vivid description of Eastern Europe.W artykule podjęto próbę określenia statusu gatunkowego dzieł historycznych Aleksandra Gwagnina.
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
