    No full text

The brig Marthe Andrea and Captain Lars Berg: An account of the 19thc. Norwegian timber trade in Cornwall

On Friday 15 July 1859, the Royal Cornwall Gazette reported on a coroner’s inquest held the previous Monday at Restronguet Passage, Mylor. The body of Lars Berg, a 56-year-old Norwegian ship’s captain and half-owner of the brig Marthe Andrea had been discovered in the creek.1 Three to four weeks earlier the ship had arrived at Restronguet from Tønsberg, Norway, laden with deals and battens (processed timber used for housing and ship building).2 She became leaky on the voyage, and after the cargo was unloaded, she docked at Restronguet Point to be inspected and caulked. The ship did not lie on an even keel however, and the hull became badly damaged. The Marthe Andrea was found to be damaged beyond repair, and as co-owner of the ship, Lars Berg anticipated great financial loss and took his own life: … after retiring to bed early on Friday night, at his lodgings, he stole out of the house secretly, and, having dressed himself in his old clothes and tied a stone about 10lbs. weight across his chest, he walked down to the water side a little above Great Wood, and committed suicide by drowning himself. On his not coming down for breakfast on Saturday morning, search was made for him, and some parties dredged for him opposite the passage; but in the course of the afternoon two little boys bathing near Great Wood, discovered the body by treading on it. They immediately gave an alarm, and some parties went down and had the body taken up and conveyed to his lodgings. This report caught the interest of the authors, and a joint venture began to discover what had led to this tragedy. Through an extensive investigation of British and Norwegian archives and newspapers, a tale unfolded of the days of the nineteenth century Norwegian timber trade, when Europe required interminable importation of lumber and timber. This was particularly so in Cornwall where timber was required in vast quantities for the mining and shipbuilding industries. By exploring the social histories of the Marthe Andrea and one of her longest serving captains, Lars Berg, this paper reveals the significance of the timber trade for Norwegian and Cornish maritime communities. The authors explore the political and economic contexts of the time and how these affected the individuals working in this industry. The story begins with the tale of the ship, the Marthe Andrea.publishedVersio

Monitoring sickness insurance claimants: evidence from a social experiment

    No full text
The paper exploits a unique social experiment carried out in 1988 in Sweden to identify the effect of monitoring on sickness absence. The treatment consists of postponing the first formal point of monitoring during a sickness absence spell, a requirement for a doctor’s certificate, from day eight to day fifteen. The experiment was conducted in two geographical areas, and the treatment group was randomized by birth date. The results show strong effects on sickness absence duration from extending the waiting period in both areas. On average, the durations increased by 6.6 percent. No effect on incidence of sickness absence is found. A heterogeneity analysis reveals that monitoring affects men more than women.Absenteeism; sickness insurance; monitoring; social experiment

Unifeed, carri miscelatori e sistemi automatici

    No full text

Development of a healthier fermented sausage containing dietary fiber and less salt

To typer salami ble laget. Sausage is a popular meat product to meals together with bread. Sausages contain a lot of saturated fat and salt and therefore perceived as an unhealthy meat product. Norwegian dietary guidelines recommend eating foods that contain less saturated fat, salt and sugar. Norwegians consume too little fiber on a daily basis. An addition of fiber in meat products will therefore help to increase the recommended intake of fiber in the diet at 25 g / day for women and 30 g / day for men. The aim of this study was to develop a healthier sausage, a salami type, added 3 % fiber and contain less salt. Two types of salami were made. One type contained 35 % fat and the other type contained 15 % fat. In both fat levels there were added two salt levels, both current and salt content on 6 % salt and 4, 75 % salt. Today, half thawed raw materials are used for production of salami. Half thawed raw materials leads to large energy costs that is desirable to reduce. Therefore, it was used different percentage of fresh and frozen raw materials in production. If the food industry should be able to declare their products with a source of fiber, it must be added 3g fiber per 100 g product. It was therefore desirable to explore the possibility of adding 3% fiber in salami. It was added a ratio of two different fibers so that the fiber content in the final product was 3%. Since texture and consistency becomes a challenge when fiber is added and fat and salt is reduced, it was desirable to see what effect it gives in a texture analysis, sensory and in a consumers test. Fat and salt have important functional and sensory properties in salami. Fat and salt provide texture and taste. The product should also look acceptable. Cured sausages which contained most frozen percentage of raw materials got a nicer appearance in texture than cured sausages with a smaller percentage of fresh meat. Sausages with reduced fat were significantly harder in consistency. Salt is a flavor that is preferred by consumers. To enable consumers to accept a reduction of salt, the salt must be gradually reduced. The consumer test showed that sausages with a reduced salt content were preferred over sausages with the current salt content. A 3 % content of fiber in fermented sausages would affect the consistency in the product. Fiber would form interactions with water and influence the consistency. To solve the challenges with less salt, saturated fat and adding fiber the meat industry has technological and manufacturing challenges. Taste and aroma are important for the quality of the fermented sausage. Volatile compounds were found to have significant impact on the percentage of frozen raw materials that were used. Fermented sausages produced with the highest percentage of frozen raw materials showed a tendency to contain most volatile compounds.M-MA

    The EMEC model: Version 2.0

    No full text
The present paper introduces a new version of an applied general equilibrium model of the Swedish economy: Environmental Medium Term Economic Model (EMEC). The model is used at NIER for analysing economic implications for households and firms of the Swedish environmental policy. The economy and the environment interact in the model and thus, we can analyse the economic implica-tions of various environmental policy measures, such as a CO2-tax, a CO2-ceiling and CO2-trading. The model captures also ancillary benefits of climate policy for NOx, SO2, PM10 and PM20. This new version of EMEC, in addition, analyses the effects of road user charges and the economic impact of environmental policy measures on six types of households, as transport demand is represented in a much more detail and as households are distributed, by disposal income and residence. Furthermore, the model distinguishes 26 industries, 33 composite commodities, 26 consumer goods, two kinds of labour and eight pollutants. The model produces results for endogenous variables, which can be interpreted fully in terms of the model’s theory, data and the assumptions underlying the exogenous variables.CGE-model; Sectors; Pollutants; Factors of production; Substitution; Sweden

Un bilancio per l'EDB. Progressi, problemi, prospettive

The paper has the aim to report data about the Epigraphic Database Bari project, with a special attention to the years 2013-2016. In this period, the EDB achieved both an impressive quantitative growth and a strong qualitative improvement, dued to a series of close relationships established with different partners, as the IT Department of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” (about the IT structure of the database), the similar projects of the Epigraphic Database Rome - EDR and the Epigraphic Database Heidelberg – EDH (about the harmonization of the data), at last with other totally different projects, as the digitized photographic archive of the Papal Commission of Sacred Archaeology (PCAS) and the Domitilla-Projekt (by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the German Archaeological Institute). Thanks to the systematic survey (with a related photographic campaign, with more than 7000 photos) in this catacomb, the Author discovers some until today unknown inscriptions and also proposes new readings of some published texts.
