Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

O objetivo central é, tendo como centro a narrativa de Almeida, perceber o contexto sócio histórico da revolução, seus desdobramentos e, principalmente, seu significado para o nascente capitalismo moderno, que está, neste momento, em vias de consolidação.ABSTRACTThe present article seeks to superimpose, as a construction of critical knowledge, three narratives on the events of February 1848 in Paris: one historical and general, that situates the processuality of the French Revolution begun in 1789; another Marxian based on the “Communist Manifest”, on the articles of the “Class Struggle of France” and the “18 Brumary of Luiz Bonaparte”; and the narrative, expressed in three inedits letters of Alegretense Sebastião Ribeiro de Almeida, who was in Paris and was an eyewitness to the fall of the French monarchy, which spread throughout Europe. The central objective of Almeida’s narrative is to understand the socio-historical context of the revolution, its consequences and, above all, its meaning for the modern capitalism nascent, which is now being consolidated

Este processo configurou uma herança não democrática que desafia e hegemoniza até hoje constantemente a realização de uma dinâmica de democracia enquanto um sistema de poder com base na articulação de posições a partir da vontade constituída por maiorias no debate público.ABSTRACTThis present article, constituent of post-doctoral studies being carried out, aims to contribute to the research on the process of democratic rationalization in Brazil checking what are the features of the socio-historical background of our country that challenge the realization of democracy. It maintains that the realization or not of democracy in the country’s development is not something natural, but a rational construction (rationalization of democracy) that caters to different projects in dispute. It posits the principle that the process of socio-historical national shaping was marked by a typical process of colonization based on slavery (violence, promiscuity, patrimonialism and cordiality, labor anti-ethics). It approaches the particular elements of how the “coronelismo” was structured in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and its impact in this rationalization process of the democratic element in Brazil. This process set up an undemocratic heritage that challenges and hegemonizes until today constantly the realization of a dynamic of democracy as a system of power based on the articulation of positions from the will constituted by majorities in the public debate
