Isolation and molecular characterization of viral encephalopathy and retinopathy virus from gilthead seabream larvae (Sparus aurata) showing mass mortalities
Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata, L.1578) has been reared since several years in close connection with the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) often affected by severe losses caused by viral encepahalopathy and retinopathy (VER) without showing any clinical sign or mortality. This observation led to consider Sparus aurata a species completely resistant to betanodavirus infection. In 2001, Castric et al., during a VER outbreak affecting a farmed seabass population, succeeded to obtain a VER isolate from asymptomatic seabream, collected in the same farm. In the following years several rumours about seabream larvae mortalities caused by betanodavirus infections have circulated among farmers and in the scientific world but very few investigations have been performed. In 2007, Beraldo et al. described the occurrence of a betanodavirus outbreak in sea bream larvae showing mass mortalities. Clinical signs, histological and immunohistochemistry findings were described. Frozen samples belonging to the same outbreak were accidentally made available later on by the farmer and processed for virus isolation and characterization. In the present study we describe the isolation of the causative agent in SSN-1 cells, its identification by PCR and molecular characterization as reassortant virus containing the genome from RGNNV (RNA1) and SJNNV(RNA2) genotypes. Our findings corroborate the preliminary results described by Beraldo et al. and definitively demonstrate that gilthead seabream must be included in the list of VER susceptible species at least during larval stage.

Emblemas e rituais: reconstruindo a história da Escola de Enfermagem Hermantina Beraldo Emblemas y rituales: reconstrucción de la historia de la Escuela de Enfermería Hermantina Beraldo Emblems and rituals: rebuilding the history of Hermantina Beraldo School of Nursing
Estudo histórico-social. The spectral gluing theorem revisited
We strengthen the gluing theorem occurring on the spectral side of the
geometric Langlands conjecture. While the latter embeds into a
category glued out of 'Fourier coefficients' parametrized by standard
parabolics, our refinement explicitly identifies the essential image of such
embedding
Do differences in IQ predict Italian North-South differences in Income? A methodological critique to Lynn
Lynn (2010) suggests that differences in average intelligence explain many of the differences observed across the Italian regions. This paper puts forward a methodological critique to his study, coupling it with an empirical test showing that Lynn’s analysis is not sufficiently robust to support its conclusions
Movements as multiplicities and contentious branding: lessons from the digital exploration of #Occupy and #Anonymous
This conceptual paper wishes to contribute to the debate on digitally mediated movements by developing the perspective of ‘contentious branding’. The empirical research has followed the #Occupy and #Anonymous hashtags around popular social media, reconstructing their highly heterogeneous adoption. A branding perspective on contentious politics is aimed at highlighting the diverse and sometimes contradictory appropriations of the ‘semiotic repertoires’ of protest movements, particularly apparent within digital networks of communication. A contentious branding perspective on social movements not only tries to fit these specific cases better: it intends to provide an epistemological and methodological device to sustain a non-essentialist understanding of social movements in general, and to face the challenges and opportunities of digital social movement research in particular. The first section of the paper briefly discusses the concepts ‘social movement’ and ‘branding’, characterizing the proposed idea of ‘contentious branding’. Some insights derived from a broader digital exploration on the uses of the hashtags #Occupy and #Anonymous then serve to emphasize their variable, incoherent and at times contradictory utilization: few of the several reiterations of the brand Occupy, deviating from its original use, are presented, and a heuristic categorization of Anonymous’ diverse issues of involvement is proposed. Based on this, the discussion further develops the concept of contentious branding, clarifying its analytical boundaries vis a vis neighboring approaches in social movement theory. The conclusion discusses some of the epistemological and methodological implications that contentious branding bears for the study of social movements in the digital age
