Kinetic model based on molecular mechanism for action potential

    No full text
The Hodgkin-Huxley model for action potentials has been widely used but was not built on a microscopic description of the neuronal membrane. Through molecular dynamics simulations, the molecular mechanism of the channel currents is becoming clear. However, the quantitative link between molecular mechanism and action potential remains to be elucidated. Here, a kinetic model for action potential based on the molecular mechanism of the channel currents is proposed. Using it, the experimental observations about action potential are reproduced quantitatively and explained based on molecular mechanism. We find that the accumulation of Na+ ions near exit of the electivity filter is the dominant event to cause the refractory period of the Na+ channel and the types of the channel currents depend on its rate constants. The channel inductance represents the inertia of the channel to retain a certain ion binding state, the channel resistances include ones against state transition and charge transfer

Detangling Knots in the Narratives: A Response to Theunis Roux

    No full text
This article is part of a symposium on Theunis Roux\u27s article titled \u27Grand Narratives of Transition and the Quest for Democratic Constitutionalism in India and South Africa\u27, which proposes two dominant narratives about the constitutional transitions in India and South Africa. The author focuses on Indian constitutional praxis to evaluate the claims of both. Part A engages with Roux’s version of the \u27Liberal Progressive Narrative\u27 and demonstrates what post-liberal accounts of the Indian constitutional transition offers that differs from the standard narrative as presented by Roux. Part B turns to the \u27Culturalist Grand Narrative\u27 and teases out the differences between (and stakes of) its decolonial and culturalist strands

Identification of semiochemical candidates involved in Glossina palpalis gambiensis larviposition site selection and behavioural responses of adult gravid females

Behavioural bioassays data and script for statistical analyses related to the paper entitled "Identification of semiochemical candidates involved in glossina palpalis gambiensis larviposition site selection and behavioural responses of adult gravid females". This study aims to identify chemicals emitted during the pupariation process in Glossina palpalis gambiensis and test for their behavioural activity and attractiveness on gravid females. These data have been obtained at the CIRDES insectary between June 2017 and November 2018

Distance Bounding Protocols on TH-UWB Radios

    No full text
Relay attacks pose a real threat to the security of wireless communications. Distance bounding protocols have been designed to thwart these attacks. In this paper, we study the way to adapt distance bounding protocols to time-hopping ultra wide band (TH-UWB) radios. Two protocols are proposed which are based on the milestones of the TH-UWB radio: the time-hopping sequence and the mapping code. The security and the different merits of those protocols are analyzed

Three trocar laparoscopic Roux-en-y gastric bypass: A novel technique en route to the single-incision laparoscopic approach

    No full text
AbstractBackgroundLaparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the gold standard bariatric procedure. Typically, the procedure necessitates five to seven small skin incisions for trocar placement. The senior author (AA Saber) has developed a three-trocar approach for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.MethodsSixteen patients underwent triple-incision laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass between May 2009 and August 2009. The same surgeon performed all surgical interventions. The umbilicus was the main point of entry for all patients and the same operative technique and perioperative protocol were used in all patients.ResultsA total of sixteen triple-incision laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses were performed. The procedures were successfully performed in all patients. Mean operating time was 145.4 min. None of the patients required conversion to an open procedure. There were no mortalities or post-operative technical complications noted during the immediate post-operative period.ConclusionThree trocar laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is safe, technically feasible and reproducible. This technique may be considered a “precursor” to single-incision laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
