    Painful and painless channelopathies

    No full text
The discovery of genetic variants that substantially alter an individual's perception of pain has led to a step-change in our understanding of molecular events underlying the detection and transmission of noxious stimuli by the peripheral nervous system. For example, the voltage-gated sodium ion channel Nav1.7 is expressed selectively in sensory and autonomic neurons; inactivating mutations in SCN9A, which encodes Nav1.7, result in congenital insensitivity to pain, whereas gain-of-function mutations in this gene produce distinct pain syndromes such as inherited erythromelalgia, paroxysmal extreme pain disorder, and small-fibre neuropathy. Heterozygous mutations in TRPA1, which encodes the transient receptor potential cation channel, can cause familial episodic pain syndromes, and variants of genes coding for the voltage-gated sodium channels Nav1.8 (SCN10A) and Nav1.9 (SCN11A) lead to small-fibre neuropathy and congenital insensitivity to pain, respectively. Furthermore, other genetic polymorphisms have been identified that contribute to risk or severity of more complex pain phenotypes. Novel models of sensory disorders are in development-eg, using human sensory neurons differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells. Understanding rare heritable pain disorders not only improves diagnosis and treatment of patients but may also reveal new targets for analgesic drug development. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd

Water Quality Measurements in the Brantas, Indonesia: Constructing Different Perspectives with Principal Component Analysis

    No full text
The water quality of the Brantas river in Indonesia is of concern to several agencies on East Java. These agencies all measure its water quality in their own way in terms of locations, rhythms and parameters. The goal of this thesis is to find out if these agencies measure the same and if not, how these measurements differ. From these measurements, perspectives are constructed for each agency with the use of Principal Component Analysis. The agencies investigated are the Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Jawa Timur (DLH Jatim), Belai Besar Wilayah Sungai Brantas (BBWS) and Perum Jasa Tirta I (PJT). As an addition to the PCA, a neural network model is constructed and trained to recognize the measurement agency of a datapoint from the measurement values. It was found that the all three agencies recognized oxygen as a dominant driver in water quality processes. Secondary processes were mostly driven by rainfall, but the effect of this was seen differently by the agencies. DLH Jatim distinguishes surface waste runoff separately from rainfall, while Perum Jasa Tirta I will see them as inherently connected. BBWS will not recognize the surface waste runoff process as a significant factor in the water quality. These differences found in the representation of core processes in the Brantas outline how different agencies can have a different perspective on water quality. This was further underlined by the conclusions from the neural network analysis. Here it was found that the author could be recognized from the measurement values alone on 88% of agency data.Civil Engineerin

TRANSLATE with x English Arabic Hebrew Polish Bulgarian Hindi Portuguese Catalan Hmong Daw Romanian Chinese Simplified Hungarian Russian Chinese Traditional Indonesian Slovak Czech Italian Slovenian Danish Japanese Spanish Dutch Klingon Swedish English Korean Thai Estonian Latvian Turkish Finnish Lithuanian Ukrainian French Malay Urdu German Maltese Vietnamese Greek Norwegian Welsh Haitian Creole Persian   //   TRANSLATE with COPY THE URL BELOW Back EMBED THE SNIPPET BELOW IN YOUR SITE Enable collaborative features and customize widget: Bing Webmaster Portal Back //The problem of waste is something that is always encountered in every city, including Batu City, the Batu City DLH which is responsible for handling the impact of waste in Batu city has difficulty in collecting data on the amount of waste from TPS3R because the collection method is still manual and estimated. From the problems raised by the DLH of Batu City, the author took the initiative to create an information system for TPS3R officers to report the amount of waste online. After discussions with the DLH of Batu city, the author decided to create a website-based information system called SIMSAT (Sistem Informasi Sampah TPS3R). The system will be used by TPS3R and DLH officers in Batu City to review the amount of waste entering and leaving TPS3R, as well as providing an attractive data display so that the Batu City DLH can process data more easily. The author hopes that this system can provide efficiency and effectiveness in collecting data so that data can be a reference in making decisions to reduce waste. The Individual-oriented Paradigm of Postmodern Pedagogical Education: Danish Context

    No full text
The article deals with the analysis of the main characteristic features of individual-oriented humanistic teacher education in the Danish environment. The author starts with the historical background, pointing out the founders of humanistic Danish pedagogy. Further on, the article investigates postmodern concepts of authentic teacher professional training formulated by Charles Taylor and developed by Danish philosophers P.F. Laursen and B. Jacobsen. The author argues that K. A. Larsen's DLH theory considers pedagogic education as an active process of decision-making, thus combining individual-oriented theories with postmodernity

In this paper several polycrystalline molecules with sulfonate groups and some of their metal complexes, including DL-homocysteic acid (DLH) and its Sr- and Cu-complexes, pyridine-3-sulphonic acid and its Co- and Ni-complexes, sulfanilic acid and L-cysteic acid were investigated using THz time-domain methods at room temperature. The results of THz absorption spectra show that the molecules have characteristic bands in the region of 0.2-2.7 THz (6-90 cm(-1)). THz technique can be used to distinguish different molecules with sulfonate groups and to determine the bonding of metal ions and the changes of hydrogen bond networks. In the THz region DLH has three bands: 1.61, 1.93 and 2.02 THz; and 0.85, 1.23 and 1.73 THz for Sr-DLH complex, 1.94 THz for Cu-DLH complex, respectively. The absorption bands of pyridine-3-sulphonic acid are located at 0.81, 1.66 and 2.34 THz; the bands at 0.96, 1.70 and 2.38 THz for its Co-complex, 0.76, 1.26 and 1.87 THz for its Ni-complex. Sulphanilic acid has three bands: 0.97, 1.46 and 2.05 THz; and the absorption bands of L-cysteic acid are at 0.82, 1.62, 1.87 and 2.07 THz, respectively. The THz absorption spectra after complexation are different from the ligands, which indicate the bonding of metal ions and the changes of hydrogen bond networks. M-O and other vibrations appear in the FIR region for those metal-ligand complexes. The bands in the THz region were assigned to the rocking, torsion, rotation, wagging and other modes of different groups in the molecules. Preliminary assignments of the bands were carried out using Gaussian program calculation. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.SpectroscopySCI(E)EIPubMed15ARTICLE5884-8917

Handedness and midsagittal corpus callosum morphology: a meta-analytic evaluation

    No full text
Following a series of seminal studies in the 1980s, left or mixed hand preference is widely thought to be associated with a larger corpus callosum than right handedness, influencing the interpretation of findings and various theories related to interhemispheric processing, brain lateralisation, and hand preference. Recent reviews, however, find inconsistencies in the literature and cast doubt on the existence of such an association. The present study was conducted to clarify the relationship between hand preference and callosal morphology in a series of meta-analyses. For this purpose, articles were identified via a search in PubMed and Web Of Science databases. Studies reporting findings relating to handedness (assessed as hand preference) and corpus-callosum morphology in healthy participants were considered eligible. On the basis of a total of k = 24 identified studies and databases, random-effects meta-analyses were conducted considering four different group comparisons: (a) dominantly right- (dRH) and left-hand preference (dLH), (b) consistent right (cRH) and non-cRH preference, (c) cRH with mixed-hand preference (MH), and (d) cRH with consistent left-hand hand preference (cLH). For none of these meta-analyses did we find a significant effect of hand preference, and narrow confidence intervals suggest that the existence of population effects larger than 1% explained variance could be excluded. For example, considering the comparison of dRH and dLH (k = 14 studies; 1910 dRH and 646 dLH participants) the mean effect size was Hedge’s g = 0.016 (95% confidence interval: − 0.12 to 0.15; explained variance: < 0.001%). Thus, the common practice of assuming an increase in callosal connectivity based on mixed or left hand preference is likely invalid. © 2021, The Author(s)
