Goodness-of-fit tests in semiparametric transformation models using the integrated regression function

    No full text
Consider the following semiparametric transformation model Λθ (Y) = m(X) + ε, where X is a d-dimensional covariate, Y is a univariate dependent variable and ε is an error term with zero mean and which is independent of X. We assume that m is an unknown regression function and that {Λθ : θ ∈ Θ} is a parametric family of strictly increasing functions. We use a profile likelihood estimator for the parameter θ and a local polynomial estimator for m. Our goal is to develop a new test for the parametric form of the regression functionm, which has power against local directional alternatives that converge to the null model at parametric rate, and to compare its performance to that of the test proposed by Colling and Van Keilegom (2016). The idea of the new test is to compare the integrated regression function estimated in a semiparametric way to the integrated regression function estimated under the null hypothesis. We consider two different test statistics, a Kolmogorov–Smirnov and a Cramér–von Mises type statistic, and establish the limiting distributions of these two test statistics under the null hypothesis and under a local alternative. We use a bootstrap procedure to approximate the critical values of the test statistics under the null hypothesis. Finally, a simulation study is carried out to illustrate the performance of our testing procedure, to compare this new test to the previous one and to see under which model conditions which test behaves the best. We also apply both methods on a real data set

The study is primarily conducted from the perspective of musical improvisation as a process of writing and memory construction. Through a theoretical and critical approach – including comparisons with the work of Marcel Proust – the research examines how the text employs elements such as temporal fragmentation, involuntary memory, and the interplay between vision, blindness, and hearing to construct a singular narrative that, despite its fragmented nature, is neither random nor precarious. The study also explores the structural aspects of the novel, demonstrating how this flow of memories, combined with elements such as its unorthodox syntax and the pervasive atmosphere of mystery, shapes the textual fabric. Furthermore, the dissertation highlights the relationship between the author, his contemporaries, and the avant-garde, analyzing how he reconfigures concepts such as collage and displacement. Finally, it discusses the translation of the novel as a practice of improvisation and performanc

Estimation and goodness-of-fit tests in semi- and nonparametric transformation models

The simple linear regression model is the most commonly used model in statistics when we want to explain the relationship between a dependent variable and a vector of explanatory variables. However, this model relies on heavy assumptions that are not always satisfied in practice, namely that the structure of this model is additive and linear, the variance of the error term is constant and the error term is normally distributed. One way to solve these problems is to transform the response variable. In this thesis, we consider semi- and nonparametric transformation models, i.e., models where the regression function is nonparametric and the transformation of the response is either parametric or nonparametric. The first main objective of this thesis is to construct tests for the parametric form of the regression function in a semiparametric transformation model. We construct a first test based on estimations of the error distribution function and a second test based on estimations of the integrated regression function. A large simulation study is performed to see under which model conditions which test behaves the best. The second main objective of this thesis is to construct new nonparametric estimators for the transformation in a nonparametric transformation model, the first one based on the least squares loss and the second one based on the least absolute deviation loss. The proposed estimators perform better than the estimators already developed in the literature.(SC - Sciences) -- UCL, 201

Waterborne platooning in the short sea shipping sector

    No full text
The potential to implement the concept of waterborne platooning in the European short sea transportation system is currently being explored. In the concept, a platoon is referred to as a “Vessel Train” (VT). A VT is composed of a fully manned lead vessel and a number of follower vessels. The lead vessel takes over the navigational and situational awareness responsibilities for the follower vessels (FVs). This enables automation of the navigational tasks on these follower vessels, which in turn leads to a potential reduction in crew size and associated cost. This paper describes the economic viability of the VT concept. It is applied to a short sea case study in which a fully matured system and an early implementation stage are mimicked. The assessment shows that viability is strongly influenced by the number of crew members removed from the FVs and the departure intervals of consecutive trains. It concludes that while economically viable cases can indeed be identified, the benefits created by this VT implementation are present but not very large. This is making it questionable if a successful application of the concept can be achieved given the risk and uncertainty surrounding the individual parameters.Ship Design, Production and Operation

Automation Options for Custom-Made Composite Part Production

    No full text
This project analyses the feasibility of the integration of an automation system for custom-made composite part production at the superyacht equipment manufacturer Rondal BV. An analysis of the current prepreg production is performed to understand the automation opportunities and production requirements. Nesting, kitting, protective film removal and the laminating of the plies as well as de-bulking preparation for the laminate were identified as potential automation areas. The analysis also considers the labour time and cost efficiency of the production.Various automation techniques currently applied in other composite manufacturing industries have been considered and analysed for their feasibility to the Rondal product manufacture. The focus of the analysis was to keep the current manufacturing steps, while reducing labour hours and lead time. The proposed system has also been assessed in terms of its future advancement by considering its current state of development within the industry. Based on this analysis the most appropriate automation solution is the “Pick and Place (P&P) cell” concept. Its capabilities and flexibility recommend it as a suitable candidate to be implemented in the automated manufacture of the variety of Rondal products.Challenges of each individual equipment within the P&P cell and their interactions are described in detail. Predictions for the automation equipment except for the film removal tool where able to be obtained through literature and interviews with experts in the industry. Due to the lack of available literature information fitting this specific application, on the protective film removal process, a large proportion of this project was dedicated to the development of this tool. In contrast to previous developments, this project uses shock cooling as a solution to detach the protective film from the prepreg.Implementation of a P&P cell concept was further investigated by the ability of the robot to reach all equipment without affecting the work flow throughout the Rondal workshop. Regulations and other layout restrictions have been considered for the final layout proposal. In order to align the manual and the automation process effectively, common mechanized process steps have been integrated for the use of both approaches. The effectiveness of the chosen automation system was demonstrated by analysing cost and time statistics of the on-site process, as well as observations of a computer-assisted process simulation. As a result, lead time saving of up to 5 work days per product type as well as labour time reduction of up to 50% were determined. However, the economic analysis showed that the investment into the P&P automation system is not feasible given the current volume of production. On the basis of these conclusions, recommendations have been made to Rondal, proving potential production changes that could lead to an effective integration of automation at their facilities.Marine Technology | Ship Design, Production and Operation

    Bjerget og Borgerkrigen

In this paper, we’re interested in examining the recent critically acclaimed works of the Danish au-thor, Kaspar Colling Nielsen. He only has two works to his name, his 2010 debut Mount Køben-havn, and his first novel, Den Danske Borgerkrig 2018-24, which was published in 2013. Still, it is not an understatement to say that Colling Nielsen has more than stood out in the literary arena. His aberrant themes and writing style set him apart from most of his contemporaries and has earned him a lot of attention from people both inside and outside the Danish literary community. In this paper’s quest to explore the works of Kaspar Colling Nielsen, we analyze the characteristics of his texts and examine the ways in which his literature can act as social criticism. We seek to an-swer some of these questions through literary techniques like magical realism, science fiction, nar-ration and humor. Based on our analysis, it can be concluded that Colling Nielsen, in both works, construct his texts as sort of a hybrid genre that mixes the qualities of the novel and short stories. Furthermore, he draws upon elements of magical realism and science fiction to add vulgar, grotesque, hyperbolic, and hu-morous qualities to his writing. Our analysis finds that certain themes remain consistent throughout Colling Nielsen’s works. Two main ones are the economy, and barriers of class. Moreover, it is concluded that Mount København serves as Colling Nielsen’s utopian vision, while Den Danske Borgerkrig 2018-24 can be character-ized as its dystopian counterpart. In both works, the author makes use of the genres’ potential for commenting on and criticizing real life social conditions. In this paper, we’re interested in examining the recent critically acclaimed works of the Danish au-thor, Kaspar Colling Nielsen.
