Oral History Interview with Anne Noreen Bauer, August 16, 2001
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Anne Noreen Bauer. She was born on 30 July 1915 in Monterey, Indiana. After graduation from high school she attended St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka, Indiana, where she received her nurse's training. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, she joined the Army Nurse Corps, was commissioned and reported to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana in August 1942. She was sent to California where she embarked on the USS West Point (AP-23). She recalls the ship hitting a whale during the transit. Eventually, she arrived at a hospital in Calcutta, India where she was assigned as supervisor in charge of surgery and head nurse of the Intensive Care Unit. She describes her experiences during her 18 months in Calcutta, including the Japanese bombings. Next she was sent to Kandy, Ceylon which was under the command of Lord Louis Mountbatten, where she was stationed for a year as head nurse of the ward. She recalls being invited to Mountbatten's quarters for dinner and engaging him in a conversation where he recounted that he "knew all about Mishawaka, Indiana," her birthplace. She recalls that the Women's Army Corps had just been formed and she treated several of them as patients. She recalls that Kandy was the headquarters of General Stilwell. She recalls feeding General Stilwell ice cream, and his nickname for her: "Half-pint." She also recalls being nicknamed "Harpoon Annie" as a result of one of her duties administering shots for amoebic dysentery. She returned to the States in July 1945 and later served in Vietnam for two years. She recalls several of her experiences in Vietnam. She retired in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel

Podiumsdiskussion: Mehr Bildung, gleiche Barrieren?
Moderation:
Gábor Paál (Leitung der Abteilung Wissenschaft und Bildung, SWR)
Es diskutierten:
Benjamin Bauer (Stellv. Vorsitzender der grünen Fraktion im Karlsruher Gemeinderat)
Jaana Espenlaub (Baden-Württemberg-Koordinatorin von ArbeiterKind.de)
Prof. Dr. Martin Neugebauer (Professor für Bildungssoziologie, PH Karlsruhe)
Tobias Nolte (Lehrer an einer sog. „Brennpunktschule“, engagiert in der Bildungsinitiative „Related“ gegen Bildungsungerechtigkeit)
Die Podiumsdiskussion fand am 27. März 2025 am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie statt. Sie war Teil der Projektwoche „Frühlingsakademie Nachhaltigkeit 2025: Warum sind Bildungschancen wichtig?“

Theory of spin and lattice wave dynamics excited by focused laser pulses
We develop a theory of spin wave dynamics excited by ultrafast focused laser pulses in a magnetic film. We take into account both the volume and surface spin wave modes in the presence of applied, dipolar and magnetic anisotropy fields and include the dependence on laser spot exposure size and magnetic damping. We show that the sound waves generated by local heating by an ultrafast focused laser pulse can excite a wide spectrum of spin waves (on top of a dominant magnon-phonon contribution). Good agreement with recent experiments supports the validity of the model.Accepted Author ManuscriptQN/Bauer Grou
