An Interview with Tom Benjamin. Crime Fiction and Transnationality

    No full text
Born in London, Tom Benjamin worked as a journalist before becoming an internationally renowned writer of crime fiction. His debut novel, A Quiet Death in Italy (2019), is set in Bologna and features a detective of English origin – Daniel Leicester – working together with his Italian in-laws. The Hunting Season followed in 2020, while Requiem in La Rossa – the third volume of what is quickly becoming a saga – is due to appear at the end of 2021. Anna Baldini met the author in Bologna, where he currently lives with his Italian wife, on a sunny afternoon of mid July. The two of them investigate the crucial role played by transnational mobility for the author’s writing process, how it has been crucial to better understand and cope with cultural differences existing between his two realities

The paper aims to investigate the poetic feeling of nature in the works of the composer Tom Jobim, considering how the artist represents the landscape in the poetry of his individual songs (lyrics and music). By analyzing the songs As praias desertas (1958), Fotografia (1959), Corcovado (1960), Samba do avião (1962), Wave (1967), Chovendo da roseira (1971), Águas de Março (1972) e Borzeguim (1981), we will try to answer questions about how the solar potential of the Jobinian poetry is translated to a sensory experience, in sharp contrast to the "poverty of experience" identified by Walter Benjamin in the context of modernity. By considering the Brazilian popular song as a cultural monad, fertilized by several aesthetic, ideological and social elaborations, we will understand the Jobinian obsession by the natural elements: the Rain Forest, the sea, the sun, the beaches, the birds, the river and rain.s water, and other significant constellations. Transiting between sand and asphalt, Tom Jobim auscultates the dissonances of the civilizing process of the urban landscape and invites us to dive sensorially into nature: the root of his poetic ethos
