Releasing the Potentials of Senior Scholars and Scientists Emerging Productivity in a New Era

    No full text
This book focuses on the renaissance and emerging productivity of senior researchers in a new ERA. It exposes mistaken ideas about older scholars and scientists, as well as presenting their research potential and how this can be released. The book also includes a series of career autobiographies of academics who continued working after mandatory retirement and who may serve as role models for future generations. This volume is partly based on a 2003 mini-symposium on the emeriti policy of Utrecht University, organized by Henk A. Becker, and partly on the activities of the European Research Institute on Health and Aging (ERGO), of which Johannes J.F. Schroots is the director. ERGO’s aim is to disseminate knowledge on and expertise in healthy aging to the member states of the European Union and other interested countries. The present book is the final product of Becker and Schroots’s efforts to advocate the necessity of an EU policy on senior researchers

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Beatty, J.F., and the Law of Manslaughter

    No full text
In this article, the author argues that the recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions in R. v. Beatty and R. v. J.F. have clarified several of the issues that have plagued the increasingly complicated offence of manslaughter. In particular, the decisions address the redundancy among the many manslaughter provisions in the Criminal Code, the need to define a clear separation between actus reus and mens rea, and the need to establish distinct categories of objective fault for different types of manslaughter offences. The author examines the legal background of these decisions as well as the current state of the law. He concludes by identifying emerging issues relating to the offence of manslaughter, arguing that the law remains convoluted and in need of urgent reform despite the progress made in the Beatty and J.F. decisions

Value Elicitation using BDM and a Discrete Choice Mechanism

    No full text
We compare the Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (BDM) mechanism to a discrete choice mechanism for revealing willingness to pay (WTP) in a lab experiment. Differences in WTP disappear when considering only engaged bidders with non-zero bids. Only WTP elicited with BDM are sensitive to the variation of quantity offered to participants.experimental economics, substitution

Do Classroom Experiments Affect the Number of Economics Enrollments and Majors?

    No full text
The present study follows a cohort of 290 students, at an American university, who were exposed to two different pedagogical approaches – traditional 'chalk-and-talk' and classroom experiments. Although we find that the number of majors and upper division economics classes taken were not significantly different between the two groups as a whole, there were some differences across individual characteristics. For example, males who were exposed to classroom experiments enrolled in more upper division economics courses than similar males in the control group. Also, students in the experimental group who had taken economics in high school enrolled in more upper division economics courses than their counterparts in the control group. Minorities in the experimental group, however, enrolled in fewer upper division economics classes than their colleagues in the control group.

Delft University of Technolog
