    Becker-Gottlieb Transfer

The Becker-Gottlieb transfer is an S-map from the base to the total space of a fibration. It thus induces homomorphisms on homology and cohomology which are also called Becker-Gottlieb transfers. Suppose that E p − → B is a Hurewicz fibration whose fibre F is homotopy equivalent to a compact CW complex F. The Becker-Gottlieb transfer is an S-map τ: B → E, which means that there is a map τ:Σ N B → Σ N E defined between the N-th suspensions of B and E for some N. Thus τ induces a homomorphism τ ∗ on any homology theory and τ ∗ on any cohmology theory. We obtain striking relations on homology and cohomology respectively: (1) p ∗ ◦ τ ∗ = χ(F), τ ∗ ◦ p ∗ = χ(F) where χ(F) denotes multiplication by the Euler-Poincare number of F. The Becker-Gottlieb transfer was discovered in the mid seventies. It generalizes the transfer for finite covering spaces (F is a finite set of points), which had been well-known since the forties and which was a generalization of a group theory transfer from the twenties. Since the discovery of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer, other transfers have been discovere

The aim of the present thesis is to analyse the translation of ironic humour in two Brazilian translations of the first novel of the German Jewish writer Jurek Becker (1982). The theoretical background for our analysis is the methodology developed by Katharina Reiß in Germany (1971), which aims at objective translation criticism that takes into account the specificity of a tranlated text. The present research analyses the quality of the equivalents proposed by two translators with respect to the ironic humour surrounding an element of the narrative, a fabulous radio, through which the main character of Jakob der Lügner (Jacob, the Liar) brings a flash of hope in a Jewish ghetto. To assess the quality of the equivalents proposed, the research employs the linguistic and the pragmatic categories of Reiß translation criticism and its central concept, the equivalence

Chimoptesis zoquiapana, sp. n. Figs 25, 51 Diagnosis. In facies, C. zoquiapana is similar to C. rubigo, but in the female genitalia it differs from all its congeners. The sterigma, cingulum, and signa are similar to those of C. mitrion, and although the lateral folds of the subgenital sternite are reduced, the lateral processes from the base of the postostial sterigma are present. Description. Wing span 19 mm. Male: Unknown. Female: Head and thorax rust brown. Forewing slender; termen weakly oblique and concave near middle. Ground colour brownish sprinkled whitish; costal strigulae indistinct; ocellar area brownish cream; terminal area mixed rust. Markings indistinct, rust brown, darkest anterior to ocellus. Cilia paler than posterior part of wing. Hindwing cream basally, mixed brownish posterad; cilia more cream. Genitalia (Fig. 25) with postostial sterigma helmet-shaped with well developed lateral sclerites extending from its base; sclerite of antrum not longer that the larger signum; cingulum long, fused with a posterior sclerite; signa moderately large. Holotype female: " Mexico: D[istrito] F[ederal], P[arque]. Nac[ional]. Zoquipan, 26.VIII. 1981, V.O. Becker Col; Col. Becker 41919 "; GS 829 WZ. Etymology. The biophysical basis underlying the maintenance of early phase long-term potentiation.

    No full text
The maintenance of synaptic changes resulting from long-term potentiation (LTP) is essential for brain function such as memory and learning. Different LTP phases have been associated with diverse molecular processes and pathways, and the molecular underpinnings of LTP on the short, as well as long time scales, are well established. However, the principles on the intermediate time scale of 1-6 hours that mediate the early phase of LTP (E-LTP) remain elusive. We hypothesize that the interplay between specific features of postsynaptic receptor trafficking is responsible for sustaining synaptic changes during this LTP phase. We test this hypothesis by formalizing a biophysical model that integrates several experimentally-motivated mechanisms. The model captures a wide range of experimental findings and predicts that synaptic changes are preserved for hours when the receptor dynamics are shaped by the interplay of structural changes of the spine in conjunction with increased trafficking from recycling endosomes and the cooperative binding of receptors. Furthermore, our model provides several predictions to verify our findings experimentally

Genetic analysis of tocopherol content and composition in winter rapeseed

    No full text
The improvement of the nutritional value and the stability properties of rapeseed oil is partly hindered by the lack of information on the genetic control of tocopherols. The objectives of this investigation ware to characterize the inheritance of tocopherols by using two factorial mating designs (North Carolina Design II, NCII). The first (NCII-A) was produced with two sets of nine parents each, one selected for high and the other for low total tocopherol contents. In the second (NCII-B), each set consisted of six parents, which were either high or low for the alpha/gamma -tocopherol ratio. Parents and F-1 hybrids from both experiments were tested under field conditions in 1998 and 1999 using a completely randomized design with two replications. Only small differences were detected between mean values of parents and F-1 hybrids. General combining ability (GCA) variation in both experiments was highly significant (P -tocopherol in NCII-A and therefore for the alpha-/gamma -tocopherol ratio. These results indicate that tocopherol contents and composition are controlled mainly by genes with additive effects. Interactions of F-1 hybrids and GCA effects with the environment were significant for only tocopherol contents and not for tocopherol composition
