Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Motion binning in cone-beam CT without a prior Model
Cone-beam CT (CBCT), used to reduce setup error in radiotherapy, takes a sequence of about 670 two-dimensional X-rays acquired in a circular arc around the patient over
two minutes and reconstructs a three-dimensional volume from these projections. Consequently, when tissues move significantly during the acquisition the resulting volume is
blurry or contains streaks. The projections themselves, though, are sharp. One of the main areas of research with CBCT has been to attempt to reconstruct the motion from
these projections by collecting them into respiratory-phase or amplitude bins and using these to reconstruct bin-specific volumes. A variety of mechanisms are employed to identify and record respiratory motion so that it can be correlated with the projections.
Not all motion that occurs in the body can be correlated with respiration. The research question pursued in this thesis is whether motion can be identified in a binning
process without prior knowledge or models of the motion. Nomenclature describing motion classes and a specific type of artefact are introduced. The distinctiveness of this
artefact class is demonstrated and methods to mitigate it are proposed and evaluated. Several techniques are then used to reduce an intractable search space to a computationally feasible one. A unique application of PCA to the reconstruction process allows new kinds
of search approaches to be considered including an exhaustive search which requires a protocol change and a multiple-restart hill-climbing search that can be used with existing protocols. Experiments with three classes of phantoms, including a novel animated physical phantom, show the effectiveness of the two search methods which are finally compared with each other
Erratum: Lack of immunity against rubella among Italian young adults. [BMC Infect Dis., 17, (2017) (199)] Doi: 10.1186/s12879-017-2295-y
After publication of this article [1], the authors noted that the given names and family names of all authors had been inverted, and are therefore incorrect in the original article. In the original article, the author names appear as the following: Gallone Maria Serena, Gallone Maria Filomena, Larocca Angela Maria Vittoria, Germinario Cinzia and Tafuri Silvio. However, this is incorrect, and the author names should appear as per the below: Maria Serena Gallone, Maria Filomena Gallone, Angela Maria Vittoria Larocca, Cinzia Germinario, Silvio Tafuri. The author names have been corrected in the author list and the citation for this Erratum
Beam search algorithms for the early/tardy scheduling problem with release dates
In this paper we consider the single machine earliness/tardiness scheduling problem with di?erent release dates and no unforced idle time. We present several heuristic algorithms based on the beam search technique. These algorithms include classical beam search procedures, with both priority and total cost evaluation functions, as well as the filtered and recovering variants. Both priority evaluation functions and problem-specific properties were considered for the filtering step used in the filtered and recovering beam search heuristics. Extensive preliminary tests were performed to determine appropriate values for the parameters used by each algorithm. The computational results show that the recovering beam search algorithms outperform their filtered counterparts in both solution quality and computational requirements, while the priority-based filtering procedure proves superior to the rules-based alternative. The beam search procedure with a total cost evaluation function provides very good results, but is computationally expensive and can therefore only be applied to small or medium size instances. The recovering algorithm is quite close in solution quality and is significantly faster, so it can be used to solve even large instances.scheduling, early/tardy, beam search, heuristics
Filter/moderator system for a BNCT beam of epithermal neutrons at nuclear reactor MARIA
Filter/moderator system for a BNCT beam of epithermal neutrons at nuclear reactor MARIA
Boron Neutron Capture Therapy is a very promising form of cancer therapy, consisting in irradiating a stable isotope of boron (10B) concentrated in tumor cells with a low energy neutron beam. This technique makes it possible to destroy tumor cells, leaving healthy tissues practically unaffected. In order to carry out the therapy in the proper way, the proper range of the neutron beam energy has to be chosen.
In this paper we present a filter/moderator system modeled with MCNP code in order to obtain an epithermal neutron beam for BNCT post at MARIA reactor in Swierk.</jats:p
Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space. In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present
